Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I have directed Lily Tomlin, Julie Christie, and Julia Roberts in my career. I'm up for Best Director once again this year. Who am I?

Answer: Robert Altman

Altman directed Tomlin in 'Nashville', Christie in 'McCabe and Mrs. Miller', and Roberts in 'Pret-a-Porter'.
2. In the Best Supporting Actor category, I am the only one whose wife has a nomination under her belt, too. Who am I?

Answer: Ethan Hawke

Hawke's wife, Uma Thurman, was nominated for her role in 'Pulp Fiction'. 'Training Day' is Hawke's first nomination, and a rather surprise one at that. Voight's daughter, Angelina Jolie, has won an award for 'Girl, Interrupted'.
3. Which movie racked up the most acting nominations?

Answer: 'In The Bedroom'

Sissy Spacek for Best Actress, Tom Wilkinson for Best Actor (remember him as the guy who dropped his drawers in 'The Full Monty'?), and Marisa Tomei for Best Supporting Actress. All the others listed got two nominations, but 'Iris' also scored three acting nods.
4. Who won one of the Best Actor awards at the Golden Globes, but wasn't even nominated by the Academy?

Answer: Gene Hackman

Hackman won in the Comedy or Musical category for his 'lead' role in 'The Royal Tenenbaums,' but didn't score a nomination for an Oscar. Sean Penn probably sneaked in and stole his place on the roster.
5. I've been nominated in both lead and supporting categories, now that I'm nominated again this year. Who am I?

Answer: None Of These

Spacek and Penn have only been nominated for leading roles, and Wilkinson is enjoying his first nomination. Some right answers for this one are Denzel Washington, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ben Kingsley, Sir Ian McKellan, Jon Voight, Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith, and Kate Winslet. Quite a few repeaters this year.
6. Only twice in Oscar history have two actresses been nominated for the same film playing the same role -- one as younger and the other as older, that is. This year marks one of those instances, and oddly enough, this actress was a participant the other time, too! Who is she?

Answer: Kate Winslet

Ms. Winslet played the young and idealistic Rose in 'Titanic', later played in the same film by Gloria Stuart. This year she played the young Iris Murdoch, 'turning over' the role to Dame Judi Dench later in the film.
7. Which film is NOT nominated for Best Visual Effects this year?

Answer: 'Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone'

Harry got pretty much blown out of the water with the onslaught of 'The Lord Of The Rings'.
8. How many times has the Best Actor Oscar been won back-to-back -- one year followed by the same guy picking it up the next?

Answer: 2

Spencer Tracy did it for 'Boys' Town' and 'Captains {Courageous';} Tom Hanks pulled it off for 'Philadelphia' and 'Forrest Gump'. I think chances are good that Russell Crowe will join that list this year.
9. How many directors are up for a Best Director Oscar this year for the first time?

Answer: 2

Peter Jackson and Ron Howard.
10. How many Best Picture nominees this year also boast a Best Director nomination, usually making them a frontrunner in the race for the Best Picture statue?

Answer: 3

'A Beautiful Mind', 'Gosford Park' and 'The Lord Of The Rings' all received Best Picture and Best Director nominations -- but let's not ever forget 'Driving Miss Daisy', which was named Best Picture despite the fact that its director, Bruce Beresford, wasn't even nominated for a Best Director award!
