quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Four saloon wenches become feared outlaws. Ride and shoot like experts, escape death's jaws. They just want to settle down on a farm. But a mean bad guy wants to do them harm.

Answer: Bad Girls

From 1994, starring Drew Barrymore, Mary Stuart Masterson, Andie MacDowall and Madeleine Stowe. A laughably bad 'western.'
2. Rich old man says 'Rosebud', then breathes his last. Reporters ask, what's this thing from his past? Only he knew, but sadly now he's dead. Who by now doesn't know it was his sled?

Answer: Citizen Kane

The 1941 classic directed by and starring Orson Welles. I thought I'd throw a gimme in here.
3. A photographer is in a leg cast. He's bored to tears, but that feeling won't last. For soon he's facing the thrill of his life. Did his neighbor really murder his wife?

Answer: Rear Window

The 1954 masterpiece directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring two of the all-time greats of film, James Stewart as the daredevil photographer and Grace Kelley as his intrepid fianceé. Brilliant.
4. An older woman with young guy is smitten. She seduces the youth, who is bitten... By the love bug for her nice young daughter... Who is engaged: this guy's in hot water.

Answer: The Graduate

The superb 1967 Mike Nichols film starring a young Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. With a great soundtrack, too. 'Are you trying to seduce me, Mrs. Robinson?'
5. Two best friends go out for dancing and fun... But shoot a rapist: bang, they're on the run. Friends to the last, meeting each other's eyes. This film caused panic in insecure guys.

Answer: Thelma And Louise

From 1991, also starring Harvey Keitel, and with Brad Pitt in his debut role. This is a funny, exciting and touching film, and it's not at all 'man-bashing,' as some rather silly folks once howled.
6. Humphrey Bogart, a jaded war hero... Meets a mob boss, coward and zero. Bogie's held hostage with Lauren Bacall. Forced to help their escape, must take on them all.

Answer: Key Largo

From 1948, directed by John Huston. The mob boss was played, wonderfully, by Edward G. Robinson. Yeah! See? Yeah!
7. Orson Welles plays a shady guy --- "Harry." They say he's dead, but his friend is wary. Harry sells black market goods that don't work. He'll have to go 'cause he's such a big jerk.

Answer: The Third Man

This 1949 film, also starring Joseph Cotten as Harry Lime's friend, is based on a Graham Greene novel.
8. A comic wants to be a star badly. Asks Jerry Lewis for help, but sadly... He gets the brush-off, they keep saying "no." He kidnaps Lewis to be on his show.

Answer: King of Comedy

This 1983 film, directed by Martin Scorcese, starred Robert DeNiro as the over-zealous young comic, Sandra Bernhardt as his equally over-eager friend, and Jerry Lewis as himself. A fine example of black comedy.
9. Bruce Willis comes to town, where two gangs feud. Plays them off each other, he's one cool dude. Kills all the gangsters, rescues a bimbo. (It's not a bad remake of 'Yojimbo.')

Answer: Last Man Standing

Yes, this 1996 Willis vehicle was a remake of Akira Kurosawa's brilliant 'Yojimbo.' For that matter, so was Clint Eastwood's 'A Fistful of Dollars.' Kurosawa remains the master.
10. Jilted at the altar, nice guy turns mean. He can't handle another wedding scene. The waitress he loves is going to fly far. He woos her with Billy Idol's guitar.

Answer: The Wedding Singer

A 1998 film with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Sandler's best film by some distance, which isn't saying much, but this movie is charming enough.
