Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Babes in Toyland" opens on a stage with the curtains closed. A talking goose pokes his head through the curtains to introduce the hostess of the evening, Mother Goose. What is the name of the talking goose, who says his friends sometimes call him Silly?

Answer: Sylvester

"Hello, everybody. My name is Sylvester. Sylvester J. Goose. My friends call me Syl, or sometimes Silly." Sylvester the goose is the companion of Mother Goose and she carries him around through the entire movie. After Sylvester introduces Mother Goose, the stage curtains are drawn back and the people of Mother Goose Village can be seen dancing and singing: "Down in the square, in the Mother Goose Village square, the people gather when there's some excitement in the air." The wedding of Tom Piper and Mary Quite Contrary is tomorrow, and the townspeople are celebrating. Bo Peep and her sheep, Jack and his candlestick, Simple Simon and the Pie Man, Jack and Jill, and many more, join the dancing in the square.
2. The villain of this story is the evil and miserly Barnaby. He and his henchmen, Gonzorgo and Roderigo, hatch a plan to break up a wedding between Tom Piper and Mary Quite Contrary, killing Tom, and stealing Mary and Bo Peep's sheep. In their song "We Won't Be Happy Till We Get It", what does Barnaby sing that he wants most of all?

Answer: Mary's inheritance

Mary is unaware that when she is married she will inherit a sizable fortune, but Barnaby knows and he wants the money for himself. He can only get Mary's inheritance through marriage, so he joins his henchmen in devising a plan to kidnap Tom and drown him in a river, steal Mary's sheep, and then marry Mary.

After the men finish the plans, Barnaby sings: "I embezzle and I swindle, and I keep two sets of books, and the income tax collector always gives me dirty looks. The thought of Mary's money has a very strong appeal, so underhandedly I've planned another shady deal. And I won't be happy 'til I get it."
3. The day before Tom and Mary's wedding, Gonzorgo and Roderigo arrive at Mary's house to give her bad news of Tom: "Slowly, slowly, he sank into the sea. Though we tried to save him, he sank into the sea." As it turns out, Tom didn't really sink into sea, but was instead sold to a band of gypsies. Why didn't Barnaby's henchmen drown him as was their initial plan?

Answer: They wanted more money.

Tom was leaving Mary's house when he was hit on the head with a mallet and loaded into a wheelbarrow by Barnaby's henchmen. They are ready to dump him into the sea when they see a sign for a gypsy camp and decide to sell him off to the gypsies. That way, they get the money from the sale and get paid a second time when they tell Barnaby that Tom has drowned. Mary, Mother Goose, and Sylvester are finalizing wedding plans when Barnaby and his henchmen arrive. Gonzorgo tells Mary that Tom sank into the sea. Gonzorgo lies, singing: "We don't know how to tell you this, Miss Mary. No, we don't know how to tell you this at all. We were 20 leagues at sea, it was calm as it could be, when out of the North there came a sudden squall.

He was standing at the wheel, Miss Mary. Across the deck the mighty ocean roared.

Then the mizzen broke and fell and we heard the fellow yell, and it bashed him down and swept him overboard."
4. With Tom gone, and Bo Peep's sheep missing, Mary and the children who live with her have lost all sources of income. Mary tries to figure out how to pay the bills with the little money she has, but she can't get the numbers to add up. What is the name of the song Mary sings in a dream sequence, about not having enough money on which to survive?

Answer: I Can't Do The Sum

Mary is upset that Tom is dead, and refuses Barnaby's offer of marriage. Then the children arrive and Bo Peep tells everyone that the sheep are lost. Mary puts the children to bed and retires to the living room where she tries to figure out how to make the finances work.

She sings "I Can't Do The Sum" and realizes that her only way out of debt is to marry Barnaby. She dons her cloak and leaves the house. During Mary's song, the children had snuck downstairs to listen to her. After she leaves the house they decide that in order to keep Mary from marrying "nasty old Barnaby" they need to go and find the lost sheep.
5. In her sorrow, Mary turns to the evil Barnaby, agreeing to marry him so that she may have enough money to feed the children and keep her house. On the eve of their wedding day, Barnaby hires gypsies to perform for the townspeople. Tom reveals himself to everyone at the end of the performance, during which he had been disguised as Floretta. Who was Floretta?

Answer: A fortune teller

At the end of the gypsy performance, Floretta emerges from a wagon, singing "A wandering vagrant am I, a product of sheriffs' evictions. A gypsy by birth, I have roamed half the Earth, telling fortunes and making predictions. My skill is a magical art. I'm not just the usual swami. I don't entertain with fake legerdemain and my breath doesn't reek of salami!" Floretta goes on to "read" the fortunes of Mary and Barnaby, revealing to Mary that her Tom is alive.

At the end of the performance, Tom removes his fake nose, fake hair, and cloak, and sings in his own voice: "Goodbye to Floretta, and hello to Tom!" Tom opens his arms and Mary runs across the square to embrace him.
6. Bo Peep and the other children decide to follow the tracks of the sheep into the Forest of No Return where "those who stumble in, those who fumble in, never can get out". The trees of the forest frighten and capture the children. Tom and Mary arrive in the forest, looking for the children. Do Tom and Mary believe the children when the children tell them about the talking trees, before they go to sleep?

Answer: No

The children cry over and over, "Here, sheep!" but no sheep are to be found. They wander into a clearing inside the forest and are surrounded by a group of singing trees. The trees warn the children, "Can't you read? Can't you see? This is private property. Aren't the signs plain and clear? No one is allowed in here! But since you're here, you should know, we will never let you go. You can cry, you can shout, but you can't get out!" The children cry for help, and, just before Tom and Mary arrive in the clearing, the trees stop singing and stand still.

The children try to explain that the trees captured them, but Tom and Mary just think that the children are tired so they put the children to bed. They sing "Go to Sleep" to the children as night falls in the Forest of No Return.

As soon as everyone falls asleep, the trees wake them up again, and Tom and Mary then realize that the children were telling them the truth.
7. In the morning, Tom, Mary, and the children are marched off to see the Toymaker to be dealt with for trespassing on Toyland property. When they arrive at Toyland, they look through a window into a workshop where the Toymaker's assistant, Grumio, is showing his new invention to the Toymaker. What is the first toy that the automated machine makes - a toy that's full of sugar, and spice, and everything nice?

Answer: A doll

"Toyland, Toyland, dear little girl and boy land. While you dwell within it, you are ever happy there. Childhood's Toyland, wonderful world of joy land. Wouldn't it be fine if we could stay there forevermore?" Mary, Tom, and the children sing on their way to Toyland with the trees as their guard.

The children run to the front door of the toy factory, but the door is locked and they think it is closed. Looking through a dusty window, they see Grumio and the Toymaker with Grumio's automatic toy-making machine. Grumio demonstrates the machine by making a girl doll with blue eyes, blond hair, smiling lips, sugar, spice, and everything nice.

The Toymaker is ecstatic and takes over the machine for full-automation, since he's the "Toymaker" and Grumio is just the "assistant".

It doesn't go well.
8. The Toymaker accidentally destroys Grumio's automatic toy-making machine, by overloading it. The workshop explodes and all the toys are broken, except for one toy that was made pre-broken to be fixed up later (the Toymaker's only invention). Tom, Mary, and the children offer to help the Toymaker make toys by working on an assembly line, while Grumio works on inventing a shrink ray to make toys from life-size objects. For which gift-giving holiday does the Toymaker need all of the toys?

Answer: Christmas

After the Toymaker destroys Grumio's invention and the workshop, he sends Grumio to his room and sits dejected on the workshop floor. "I'll never make that Christmas deadline now." At that moment, Tom, Mary, and the children walk into the ruined workshop.

The Toymaker is upset that children are in the workshop, saying "Don't you know that it isn't right for children to see these toys until Christmas Day?" The clock in the workshop dings "Half past October" and the Toymaker tells Tom and Mary that the children won't have a merry Christmas that year. Tom suggests that they all work on an assembly line, and the children get to work painting toy soldiers and dolls and putting wheels on toy cars.

As they work, they sing the "Workshop Song".
9. When the Toymaker realizes that Grumio's shrink ray only helps production as long as there are enough big objects to make into small objects, he tosses it out the window, where the waiting Barnaby catches it. With the ray gun, Barnaby shrinks the Toymaker, Tom, Gonzorgo, and Roderigo and then forces the Toymaker to perform a wedding ceremony between Mary and himself. Tom saves the day and breaks up the wedding with the help of a toy army. What happens to Barnaby at the end of the fight?

Answer: He is knocked into a toy box.

The children are sent to bed in the toy factory before the Toymaker's incident with the shrink ray. While the Toymaker is stalling the wedding between Mary and Barnaby, the shrunken Tom escapes into a room where all the toys they had made are sitting in boxes. Tom rallies the toys, soldiers, planes, and more.

When he returns to the room where the wedding is taking place, Mary shrinks Barnaby so that he and Tom are the same size. Tom and Barnaby start fencing, climbing all over toy blocks and boxes. Finally, Tom gets the upper hand, knocking Barnaby into an empty toy box.
10. When the toy fight is over, Grumio arrives with a restorer gun to make everyone real-size again. Tom and Mary and the children return to Mother Goose Village free from the evil Barnaby, and the Toymaker and Grumio have enough toys to meet their deadline. In the end, do Tom Piper and Mary Quite Contrary finally get married to each other?

Answer: Yes

When the adults are all full-size once more, the children wake up and walk in on them in the room with all of the toys scattered on the floor. The adults tell the children they were playing with the toys, and everyone laughs. Tom, Mary, and the children return to Mother Goose Village and the next thing that is heard is wedding bells! Tom and Mary step out of the church in their beautiful wedding attire.

As they leave for their honeymoon, the townspeople sing. "Tom and Mary, Tom and Mary. Goodbye, good luck to you. Tom and Mary, Tom and Mary. Your beautiful dream has come true. Two lives blended, as intended, while all the world in tune smiles divinely, for you're finally on your honeymoon!"
