In the opening scene, Paul Sheldon had just finished the manuscript to a new novel for his "Misery" book series, and he threw a snowball at a tree. He got, in his car, and drove down the mountain while a snowstorm raged on during his drive. When he turned on the radio, Junior Walker's hit song, "Shotgun", played on the radio. Eventually, Paul lost control of the car and he crashed it. Annie Wilkes came by and rescued him.

The opening scene showed Paul putting on the finishing touches to a new novel for his "Misery" book series. When he ended the manuscript, he handwrote the words, "The End", and then flipped to the cover of the manuscript. On the cover, it said, "Untitled by Paul Sheldon" so this indicated he had not thought up a name for his new book.

When Annie rescued Paul, she took him back to her home and told him how she loved his "Misery" novels. In a couple of scenes, you could hear both Paul and Annie mention her last name as being Chastain. When Annie read Paul's manuscript, for the latest "Misery" novel, she blew up, at him, since he had planned to kill her off.

She even objected to Paul telling her that Misery's spirit would continue to live on in people.

Even though her name was not mentioned a whole lot, we did hear Paul's agent say her name as Marcia Sindell. When Marcia did not hear from Paul, for a couple of days, she began to worry. She called up the sheriff's office, from where Paul last was, told Buster that she thought one of her clients was missing and gave the Sheriff Paul's name. Buster asked her if she meant Paul Sheldon the writer and she told him that was her client. Lauren Bacall portrayed Marcia Sindell in "Misery".

We met Buster's wife, in a few scenes, and it was in one scene where Buster referred to her by her first name of Virginia. In that scene, Buster and Virginia were looking for Paul, in a police sheriff's car, since he was reported missing. While they were out driving, they came across Paul's car but Paul was not inside. Virginia asked Buster if she thought Paul was dead and Buster said that was a likely possibility.

In other scenes, Virginia helped Buster carry out his duties as the sheriff.

Annie found out that Paul had gotten out of his room, since he knocked over a toy penguin of hers (when he picked it up and placed it back on her desk, it faced the wrong way). Annie decided to strap Paul down, to his bed, and make sure he would not get out ever again.

She told Paul that she realized his problem was he was not used to living, at her house, and that he needed more time. She told Paul a story about how some native workers, in the past, used to steal diamonds from mines and they were punished through a method called hobbling.

She placed a block, in between his feet, and used a mallet to break his ankles (this was how to hobble one's feet). Annie immediately said, "God I love you", after this incident.

Annie had an affection for pigs and even had a pet pig that she named Misery. Paul told her he was about done with his new manuscript, in which Misery would live, and Annie was thrilled. When Annie next appeared, in Paul's room, she saw the crumpled up manuscript and that Paul had a match and lighter fluid in his hand. Paul struck the match and lit the manuscript on fire.

While Annie put out that fire, Paul hit her over the head with a typewriter and she got out a gun and shot him once. Paul immediately got up out of his wheelchair and he and Annie struggled. Eventually, Paul killed Annie when he grabbed a statue, of a pig, and hit her over the head with it two times.

Paul really wanted to get out of Annie's house and he managed to crawl out of bed and into a nearby wheelchair on a couple of occasions. On one occasion, he read through an album that Annie had, in which she saved some newspaper clippings about her. In one clipping, it discussed how Annie was the head nurse, of a maternity ward, where many babies had died on her watch.

She was arrested and acquitted. This freaked out Paul and made him realize he had to get away from Annie immediately.

Paul's agent called the sheriff's office, near the beginning of "Misery", and told him she believed Paul was missing. The sheriff made a note of it and told her his name was Buster. Buster went to Annie's house, one day, to ask her if she'd seen Paul and she told him no.

After this, he went to a store and the owner said Annie always was the first one to buy the new Paul Sheldon novel. Buster went back to Annie's house and found Paul in the basement. However, Annie stood right behind him and shot him in the stomach and Buster died. Richard Farnsworth played Buster in "Misery".

Annie made Paul burn the manuscript for his latest "Misery" novel, since he killed off Misery Chastain and Annie found this unacceptable. The next day, Annie brought Paul a typewriter and told him he would write a new "Misery" novel and that it would be his masterpiece. Paul informed Annie that novels were not typically written this way but he decided to accommodate Annie's request for a new "Misery" book.

When Paul began to type, he rubbed his finger, over the type, and realized the ink smeared.

He told Annie she would have to get him a different kind of paper and he recommended a certain kind that would work. Annie ranted, to Paul, and told him he should be a little more appreciative of all she did for him and, right before she left to go to the store, she slammed the typewriter on Paul's lap.
