Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I showed Claire around the Mott's residence. Who played me?

Answer: Charles Lucia

Lucia was cast in the minor role of Bruce Silverman in this movie. Bruce was a realtor and worked with Marlene Craven, Claire Bartel's friend. Claire went to Mr. Mott's residence near the end of the movie after she noticed it had gone up for sale and saw Bruce there.

He welcomed her to take a look inside and it was while they were in the home that he mentioned the house was being sold well below market value. He showed her to the nursery which was in the home and commented on a weird looking object. Claire then left to go home immediately after she told Bruce the object was a breast pump. Lucia starred in the movies "Edie and Pen", "Tank Girl" and "The Gumshoe Kid".
2. I took Claire's blood pressure before she saw Dr. Mott. Who played me?

Answer: Mary Anne Owen

Owen played Maria, Dr. Mott's nurse, in a minor role. Claire went to see Dr. Mott, her gynecologist, for an examination and was tended to by his nurse, Maria. Maria was seen taking Claire's blood pressure and asked Claire if this was her first visit with Dr. Mott. Claire said it was and then mentioned that Dr. Mott took her on as a patient midway through her pregnancy (she would give birth to a baby boy later in the movie). Maria said Dr. Mott was one of the best in his field and that he was expecting his own baby soon. Maria instructed Claire to take off her clothes and put a gown on, so Dr. Mott could get started right away on the exam. "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle" was Owen's first acting credit.
3. I encouraged Claire to report Dr. Mott for sexually assaulting her. Who played me?

Answer: Matt McCoy

McCoy, born on May 20th, 1958 in Washington, D.C., portrayed Michael Bartel. Michael was married to Claire Bartel and they had two children, Emma and Joe. Michael noticed that Claire was distraught one day so she admitted to him that her gynecologist, Dr. Mott, sexually assaulted her during her visit with him.

He advised her to contact the authorities to turn him in so as to prevent any other women from suffering what she had. Claire took his advice and Dr. Mott was punished for what he did. Midway through the movie, Michael spoke with his nanny, Peyton Flanders, and informed her that it would be a good idea to throw Claire a surprise party due to her being down.

When Michael learned from Claire that Peyton was actually Dr. Mott's widow, he told her to leave his home immediately and she could send for her things. Peyton managed to get inside the Bartels' home and she attacked Michael, but Michael survived the ordeal. McCoy was in the films "National Security", "L.A. Confidential" and "Abominable".
4. I nearly died from an asthma attack. Who played me?

Answer: Annabella Sciorra

Sciorra, a native of Wethersfield, Connecticut, played Claire Bartel. Claire was a stay at home mom to her daughter, Emma, and her son, Joe. Claire put out an ad in the newspaper for a nanny and was really impressed with Peyton Flanders when she met her. Claire informed Peyton that she could borrow her bracelet anytime she wanted. Midway through the film, Claire fired her handyman named Solomon after she discovered Emma's underwear in his tool cart.

This caused Emma to become estranged from her mother because she liked Solomon. Near the end of the film, Claire started to have breathing problems due to her asthma so she went to go get her inhaler, but there were no steroids left. Claire collapsed on the floor but luckily an ambulance was called for her in time, and she survived.

At the end of the movie, Claire and Peyton got into a fight which resulted in Peyton being shoved out of the attic window to her death. Sciorra had roles in the movies "Jungle Fever", "Cop Land" and "Underworld".
5. I asked the Bartels one day who the Martins were. Who played me?

Answer: Ernie Hudson

Hudson, born in 1945 in Benton Harbor, Michigan, landed the role of Solomon. Solomon was a nice man with a developmental disability but he did have a talent for making household repairs. The Bartels hired him to do just that and one day they mentioned how the Martins might return one day. Solomon asked who the Martins were so they told him that was the name they gave a bunch of birds who liked the bird house they had. Midway through the movie, Peyton confronted Solomon when he found her breastfeeding Michael and Claire's infant son, Joe, and told him not to mess with her. One day, Peyton framed Solomon when she planted Emma's underwear in his tool cart and made it seem as if he was a pedophile.

At the end of the movie, after Peyton broke into the Bartels' residence, Solomon entered the home through the attic window to protect Emma and Joe from Peyton.

After Peyton died from injuries sustained from being pushed out of the attic window, Claire allowed Solomon to hold Joe. Hudson guest starred on the TV shows "Criminal Minds", "Law and Order" and "Heroes".
6. At the end of the movie, I locked Peyton in Joe's room. Who played me?

Answer: Madelina Zima

Zima, born on September 16th, 1985 in New Haven, Connecticut, was cast as Emma Bartel. Emma was excited when her parents told her she would have a nanny and she took a liking to the woman they hired, Peyton Flanders. Emma was seen midway through the movie at the surprise party which Peyton and Michael organized and was distressed when she noticed the party did not cheer her mom up. Emma was upset when Michael and Claire told Peyton to leave their home but was then shocked a little bit later when she saw Peyton hit her mother on the back with a shovel. Peyton told Emma to get Joe, so the three of them could go off and be a family. Emma mentioned to her that Joe was in his crib in his room so Peyton went there and noticed Joe was not in the crib. Emma told Peyton that she was not her mom (Peyton's aim was to replace Claire as Emma's mom) and then locked her inside Joe's room. Zima had roles in the movies "A Cinderella Story", "Mr. Nanny" and "Looking for Sunday".
7. Peyton told me one day on the playground to leave Emma alone. Who played me?

Answer: Justin Zaremby

Zaremby had the small role of Roth in "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle". Roth was a schoolmate of Emma's, who mentioned to Peyton one night that Roth bothered her at school. Peyton asked her if Claire did anything about it but Emma said Claire was unable to get Roth to leave her alone. One day, Peyton showed up at the playground at Emma's school and asked her to point out Roth to her.

When Emma pointed towards him, Peyton went up to Roth and grabbed his arm to drag him to the side of the stairs. She told him she had a message for him, which was to leave Emma alone or else she would beat him up. Peyton twisted Roth's arm and this caused Roth to promise her he would not bother Emma again. Peyton advised Roth to not forget what she did to him. Zaremby starred in the films "Crimes and Misdemeanors", "Richie Rich" and "Giving It Up".
8. I had a miscarriage. Who played me?

Answer: Rebecca De Mornay

De Mornay, a native of Santa Rosa, California, portrayed Peyton Flanders. Peyton was Dr. Mott's wife and was distressed after her husband died and her lawyer informed her she would be in serious debt as a result of his death. Peyton collapsed and was rushed to the hospital and was given the horrible news that she had miscarried.

While at the hospital, Peyton watched the news one day and saw a report on the many women who complained about Dr. Mott's sexual misconduct. One woman that was mentioned was Claire Bartel.

When Peyton claimed to overhear at a park that Claire needed a nanny, she went to talk to Claire about getting the job. Claire was impressed with Peyton and hired her on the spot. Near the end of the movie, Peyton noticed the inhaler that Claire used to treat her asthma so she got rid of all the steroids in the inhaler.

When Claire collapsed from an asthma attack, Peyton was seen giving Joe a stroll outside and then she noticed an ambulance rushing in the direction of the Bartel residence.

She rushed back and was informed that Claire had an asthma attack. At the end of the movie, Peyton and Claire fought in the attic of the Bartel home and it was during the fight when Claire faked having breathing problems to get the upper hand on Peyton. She shoved Peyton out the attic window and Peyton then fell to her death. De Mornay had parts in the movies "Backdraft", "Risky Business" and "Runaway Train".
9. Many women reported me for sexual assault. Who played me?

Answer: John de Lancie

de Lancie, born in 1948 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, had the small role of Dr. Mott. Dr. Mott was a gynecologist and was first seen when he gave Claire an examination. Dr. Mott asked Claire how she was doing that day and Claire informed him she was fine.

He commented that Claire was pregnant with her second child and joked that she was a pro at pregnancy. Dr. Mott noticed on Claire's medical chart that she had asthma so he asked her if she had any breathing problems as of late but Claire told him she did not. During the exam, Dr. Mott felt around Claire's body inappropriately and this upset her. Claire turned Dr. Mott in to the state medical board and this encouraged other women who were also sexually assaulted by Dr. Mott to do the same. In Dr. Mott's final scene, he was seen watching a news report regarding what he had done and this upset him so much that he put a pistol in his mouth. De Lancie guest starred on the TV series "The Unit", "Without a Trace" and "NYPD Blue".
10. I died when some glass crashed on me in Claire's greenhouse. Who played me?

Answer: Julianne Moore

Moore, born on December 3rd, 1960 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, played Marlene Craven. Marlene was a realtor and a good friend of the Bartels and she met Peyton midway through the movie. Marlene was annoyed at a sound she heard so she asked what it was and Claire informed her it was a wind chime.

This hurt Peyton's feelings, since the wind chime Marlene spoke of was one Peyton got for Joe. In the middle of the movie, Marlene and her husband, Marty, went out to dinner with Claire and Michael. During the dinner, Marlene mentioned a line from a poem that said "the hand that rocks the cradle is the hand which ruled the world", hence the film's title. Near the end of the movie, Marlene did some research and noticed an article on Dr. Mott's memorial service.

When she looked at a picture of his widow in the article, she noticed the widow was Claire's nanny, Peyton Flanders. Marlene went to the Bartels' residence to speak to Claire about what she found out but Claire was not home. She told Peyton that she knew who she was and then demanded to speak to Claire so Peyton lied to her when she said Claire was outside in the greenhouse. Marlene went inside the greenhouse and accidentally kicked over a shovel, which caused a lever to close the upper windows to the greenhouse real hard.

This resulted in the glass breaking and falling on Marlene, killing her. In a previous scene, Peyton went out to the greenhouse early in the morning and set a trap for Claire in an attempt to kill her, but it was Marlene who fell victim to the trap. Moore was seen in the movies "The Forgotten", "The Big Lebowski" and "A Single Man". In 2000, she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the movie "The End of the Affair", but lost to Hilary Swank for "Boys Don't Cry". Other Oscar nominees for Best Actress in a Leading Role that year were Annette Bening for "American Beauty", Janet McTeer for "Tumbleweeds" and Meryl Streep for "Music of the Heart".
