Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dorothy is rendered unconscious when hit on the head and dreams of a land with good and evil personified. During which film does Dorothy learn to believe that "there's no place like home"?

Answer: The Wizard of Oz

This film was not a huge success when released. In 1956 they began broadcasting the film annually and now, it is considered to be one of the best films ever made.
2. Ouch! Hank is hit on the head and dreams that he is in King Arthur's court where he meets his one true love. In which movie, alas, does Hank lose his love when returned to his own time?

Answer: A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court

Lucky for us, Hank once again finds her when he takes a tour through Pendragon castle in England. This is a marvelous Bing Crosby vehicle.
3. Bart hates his piano lessons and Dr. Terwilliker, his teacher. When he dozes off during practice he dreams of Terwilliker Institute with a piano so large it takes 500 boys to play it. In which fantasy film will you find Bart?

Answer: The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T

Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) wrote the story, screenplay and lyrics for this film. The film was re-released in 1958 with a new title, Crazy Music. It was not a box office success and articles do mention that Geisel was not happy with the result either, but there are a lot of folk on various blogs who really love this film.
4. In a film about a successful girl group, flashbacks are used to tell the story of their career climb to success. The film did not go over well with the critics, though the group's fans were enthusiastic. Which film conclusion included a performance of "Spice Up Your Life"?

Answer: Spice World

In the film the girls are preparing for a career milestone concert at Albert Hall. The performance of "Spice Up Your Life" is shown as the closing credits roll.

The Spice Girls were created because of an idea by Bob and Chris Herbert that girl groups would appeal to the male audience. After auditions in 1994 a group was selected and work began, there was at least one change to the line up. Their original group name was Touch, but by the time of their first release, "Wannabe", in 1996, they had become the Spice Girls.
5. Chris runs away from home. Every time he manages to fall asleep he dreams of mermaids, small folk, swans and other creatures that will become the subjects of the stories he will become famous for as an adult. Which movie musical tells the story?

Answer: The Daydreamer

This story tells of the teen-aged Hans Christian Anderson. Produced by Rankin and Bass, all of the dream sequences are done with stop-motion puppet animation. Though the cast list is weighty with big stars, the film did not fare well with the public.
6. In which film do office workers Judy, Violet and Doralee daydream about revenge and murdering their "sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot" boss?

Answer: 9 to 5

This movie starred Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton. Not only do they daydream revenge, they manage a hilarious kidnapping of their boss which places them in positions to radically improve office procedures.

This movie was a huge box office success. Dolly Parton wrote and performed the song "9 to 5". It reached number on single on "Billboard Hot Country Singles" on January 24, 1981 and then reached "Billboard Hot 100" number one single on February 21, 1981.
7. This is the story of mild-mannered man who is picked on by everyone around him. To escape, he daydreams of excitement and bravery as he assumes the persona of his imagined characters. Which Danny Kaye film fits this description?

Answer: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Several articles state that James Thurber was not happy with the Sam Goldwyn adaptation. However, it proved to be an excellent foil for Danny Kaye's characterizations: mild-mannered Walter, a gangster, RAF pilot, etc.
8. What you and your wife want most is a child's happiness. Though one course of action has already been decided, you now believe it's not the right solution. With much thought you decide to sway your wife to a new course by relating an imagined dream. In which of these films did the husband recount a dream visitation from Golde's deceased Grandmother Tzeitel?

Answer: Fiddler on the Roof

Golde: "Grandmother Tzeitel! How did she look?"
Tevye: "Well, for a woman who has been dead for thirty years she looked very good."

There was controversy when this film was being cast about whether to use Zero Mostel, who originated the role on Broadway, or Topol, who played Teyve for the London production. Topol was thirty six when this was filmed.
9. In which film does Frenchy, after having made some disastrous choices, daydream that her guardian teen angel sings her a song in which he advises her to go back to high school?

Answer: Grease

In this 1950s love story Frankie Avalon played the guardian and sang "Beauty School Dropout" to Frenchy.

"Your future's so unclear now,
What's left of your career now?
Can't even get a trade in on your smile!"
10. This film tells the story of Roxie and Velma who want, more than anything, to be vaudeville successes. Throughout the show Roxie dreams of how she wants her life to be in several sequences. What portrayal of the Jazz Age in the 1920s would this be?

Answer: Chicago

Maurine Dallas Watkins was a journalist when she covered the 1924 stories of Belva Gaertner and Beulah Sheriff Annan, who were on trial for murder. Watkins fictionalized the stories and wrote a play. The play originally opened on Broadway in 1926. A silent film version was made in 1927 and remade in 1942 as "Roxie Hart".

The play was used as a starting point again for the 1975 Broadway production by Kander and Ebb. The film was adapted from the Kander and Ebb musical.
