Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor", what appeared near the end, which got smaller after each beat of music?

Answer: Stone slab

The first piece to be shown in "Fantasia" was Johann Sebastian Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor", which had most images take place in a sky setting. It was towards the end of the animation when a large stone slab appeared but then got smaller on account of each beat of music. The piece ended with a bright orange sky as the background while the music played out.
2. In Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker Suite", the fairies used their wands to light up which of these?

Answer: Spider's web

The second piece was Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker's Suite", which had various images like fairies, mushrooms, snowflakes and more. Near the beginning of the piece, a bunch of fairies flew around lighting up their surroundings through the use of their wands. One thing they lit up was a spider's web.
3. According to the narrator, Tchaikovsky loved "The Nutcracker Suite" the most out of all the pieces which he created.

Answer: False

When narrator Deems Taylor introduced Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker Suite", he gave a background on Tchaikovsky's career. When he spoke about "The Nutcracker Suite", he mentioned that Tchaikovsky hated this piece the most out of all his work. Right after this, Leopold Stokowski, the conductor, led the Philadelphia Orchestra into playing "The Nutcracker Suite".
4. In Dukas' "The Sorcerer's Apprentice", what did the apprentice bring to life?

Answer: A broom

Paul Dukas wrote a poem called "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and it became the third animated piece in "Fantasia". It opened up with the sorcerer practicing magic and then he stopped as he was getting tired. Once the sorcerer went to bed, the apprentice decided to try to perform his own magic. He did this by bringing a broom to life.
5. In Dukas' "The Sorcerer's Apprentice", what did the sorcerer do at the end to punish Mickey?

Answer: He swatted him with something.

The apprentice hoped that bringing the broom to life meant the broom would perform his chores for him so he could get out of the work himself. However, things went awry once the place flooded while the apprentice had a dream. The sorcerer put a stop to it and swatted Mickey with a broom as punishment.
6. In Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring", a Triceratops was one of the dinosaurs featured.

Answer: True

Igor Stravinsky's hit composition, "The Rite of Spring", was the fourth piece displayed in "Fantasia" and it featured animation on the Earth's first initial days when dinosaurs roamed the land. A variety of dinosaurs were shown, one of which was the Triceratops. The Triceratops was seen drinking water from a puddle and running from the Tyrannosaurus Rex in the piece.
7. In Beethoven's "The Pastoral Symphony", what is the first mythological creature which is seen?

Answer: Unicorn

The fifth piece which was introduced for "Fantasia" was Ludwig van Beethoven's, "The Pastoral Symphony", which had a mythological setting to it. The piece consisted of various mythological creatures, the first of which we saw were the unicorns running through a field. Other notable people from mythology seen in this piece were Zeus, Vulcan and Morpheus.
8. In Ponchielli's "Dance of the Hours", which of these animals was NOT seen?

Answer: Penguin

Amilcare Ponchielli's "Dance of the Hours" was the sixth piece seen in "Fantasia" and it consisted of several types of animals doing a dance. The animals seen were elephants, ostriches, hippopotamuses, fish and alligators. No penguins were involved in the animated piece for "Dance of the Hours".
9. In Moussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain", which of these locations is seen?

Answer: Cemetery

The seventh piece to be given an animated surprise in "Fantasia" was Modeste Moussorgsky's, "Night on Bald Mountain", which told the story of a devil. In the story, the devil sat atop Bald Mountain and on one night called upon his spirits to worship him. The spirits were seen arising from their graves at the cemetery to meet his demand.
10. In Schubert's "Ave Maria", which of these structures is seen?

Answer: Cathedral

Immediately following "Night on Bald Mountain" was Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria", the eighth and final piece of music in "Fantasia". During the animation for "Ave Maria", many monks traveled through a forest carrying lighted torches. After the forest march, we saw a cathedral and then the movie ended shortly afterwards.
