Olivia de Havilland is Charlotte's cousin Mirian Deering. On the surface, she appears to be sympathetic, but underneath she has a wretched, almost demonic plan to undermine Charlotte's sanity and steal her wealth.

Ostensibly, Dr. Drew is there to help Charlotte cope with her mental difficulties, but in reality he serves only to make things worse. Cotten is marvelous in this role as an insidious doctor who has forgotten his Hippocratic Oath.

Agnes Moorehead, who many of us know as the eccentric mother of Samantha on the television show 'Bewitched', is stunning in the role of Velma Cruther, the almost sinister maid who has been at Charlotte's side for so many years. Unfortunately, Moorehead did not win the Oscar that year. Hers was one of seven nominations for the film, with no wins.

During one of the early scenes of the film we see the mysterious and grisly murder of John Mayhew, played by Bruce Dern. This was Bruce Dern's first significant film role.

In an hilarious scene, Bette Davis wields a shotgun and blasts away at the working crew, led by George Kennedy. A bemused Kennedy is no match for the feisty Charlotte, who soon runs the construction workers off of her property.

Academy Award-winner Mary Astor played Jewel in this, her last film. She had won an Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in the 1941 film 'The Great Lie'.

Answer: Drew Bayliss

In order to convince Charlotte that she has gone mad, she is induced to 'shoot' Dr. Bayliss (the gun is full of blanks). His body is then inserted into a swamp. In one of the most memorable and ominous scenes in the film, he returns from the dead, body complete with mud and swamp vegetation. Of course, he and Cousin Miriam have schemed to fake his death in order to have Charlotte sent away for good to an institution, but we do not learn this until later.

Sweet Cousin Miriam pushes Velma down the stairs and to her death. Miriam and Drew Bayliss meet their deaths at the hands of Charlotte, who, after learning of their plot to put her away, pushes a large planter onto them. At the end of the film, Charlotte is finally taken away from her home. We do not know of her final fate.
