Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Adventurers beware: Do not begin unless you intend to finish. The exciting consequences of the game will vanish only when a player has reached ________ and called out its name." What movie game has this warning and fits in the blank?

Answer: Jumanji

"Jumanji" (1995) stars Robin Williams, Kirsten Dunst and Bonnie Hunt. The game directions are simple but every time a card is drawn, something bad happens, like the man-eating vines mentioned on the card would suddenly appear. A real-life board game exists, but sadly does not come with real-life rhinos.

Robin Williams plays Alan Parrish, a man who was trapped inside the board game for twenty years until Judy (Kirsten Dunst) and Peter (Bradley Pierce) resume playing the same game Alan and his childhood friend Sarah (Bonnie Hunt) were playing two decades before. The four must survive the obstacles the game releases to escape its curse.
2. At the end of "The Addams Family" (1991), what Halloween game does the family partake in?

Answer: Wake the dead

The rules of Wake the Dead are not given but, from context clues, we can surmise that it involves digging up graves in the cemetery. This is told to Wednesday and Pugsley by Uncle Fester. Perhaps, it's best this game remains fictional.
3. This next game is really more of a sport. Quidditch, from the "Harry Potter" series, is played using magic and flying around on broomsticks. Which of the following is not a type of ball used to play Quidditch?

Answer: Nimbus

Nimbus, specifically Nimbus 2000, is one of the broomsticks Harry uses when he plays. Quidditch serves as more than just entertainment value for Harry and the other characters, as the skills needed to play the game, such as flying on the broomsticks and accuracy, play key roles throughout the films. Harry is able to use his Quidditch techniques to capture the golen egg from the Hungarian Horntail dragon in "The Goblet of Fire". (2005)

The Quaffle is a red, leather ball that is worth ten points when thrown into the opposing team's hoop. The bludger is an enchanted black, iron ball that tries to knock players off of their broomsticks. The golden snitch is worth 150 points when it is caught by the seeker.
4. "BASEketball," (1998) starring Trey Parker and Matt Stone, centers around the eponymous game. It combines rules from both basketball and baseball. But which other activity plays a prominent role in BASEketball?

Answer: Trash talking

Every time a shot is missed in BASEketball, it counts as an out just like receiving three strikes in baseball. Points are received by taking shots and, just like in real basketball, more points are given the further away a shot is made from. There are singles, doubles and triples that award one, two and three points respectively.

Trash talking and psyching out your opponent are used to distract them when they take a shot. While a common feature in most sports, trash talking in BASEketball is usually dirtier and full of low blows.
5. "Star Wars" (1977) introduces us to Dejarik, a new version of which ancient, war-like game? However, instead of using pieces, Dejarik uses holographic monsters.

Answer: Chess

Instead of using tangible pieces, Dejarik uses holographs to play. When moved, the monsters will fight and attack each other. The Millennium Falcon contains a Dejarik table which Chewbacca and R2-D2 play on in the film.
6. Which 2012 Disney film features such fictional arcade games as "Sugar Rush" and "Fix-It Felix"?

Answer: Wreck-It Ralph

"Wreck-It Ralph" is about a video game villain who can no longer tolerate being evil and wants to be the hero for a change. During the course of the film, he winds up in a few different games including "Sugar Rush" which is a racing game and "Hero's Duty" which is a tamer version of "Call of Duty". "Fix-It Felix" is Wreck-It Ralph's original game where he is the villain.
7. In "The Wrestler" (2008), starring Mickey Rourke, what is the name of the 8-bit video game Randy Robinson plays to relive his glory days as a professional wrestler?

Answer: Wrestle Jam

Randy Robinson is apparently one of the characters the player can wrestle in "Wrestle Jam". Randy Robinson is so obsessed with this game and his past that he is ignorant that there are more advanced games in existence. When he finds out about them, he still prefers to play "Wrestle Jam" since it is the only game where he can play as his younger self.
8. Whack-Bat from "Fantastic Mr. Fox" (2009) is a sport something like baseball or cricket but instead of using a ball, the whack-bat (or the batter) must hit what flaming object?

Answer: A pinecone

Thirteen players are needed to play whack-bat. The pitcher, called a central tagger, throws the flaming pinecone to the whack-bat who then hits it. The whack-bat then knocks over a cedar stick that is used to extinguish the pinecone.
9. This is another one that's not really a game - it's more of a survival of the fittest tournament. In "The Hunger Games" (2012), starring Jennifer Lawrence, twenty-four teenagers from twelve districts fight it out to the death in the 74th Hunger Games. What are teenagers who are selected to play in the games called?

Answer: Tributes

The Hunger Games is an annual tradition in Panem that came to be after the thirteen districts rebelled against the Capital. As punishment, districts one through twelve must send one male and one female tribute into the Hunger Games where the winner receives glory and wealth beyond his or her wildest imagination. Victors often find themselves depressed and traumatized by the Games and never appreciate their rewards. District 13 does not participate in the games as it was believed to have been destroyed.

However, District 13 lives on and serves as the headquarters for the rebellion in "Mockingjay: Part 1".
10. In which Oscar-nominated film does Joaquin Phoenix play a video game where he meets up with a small alien child?

Answer: Her

"Her" (2013) stars Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore Twombly, a man enamored with the voice of his computer named Samantha (Scarlett Johansson). The unnamed video game is a creation of David O'Reilly who designs other video games for his website.

As Theodore plays the video game, Samantha gives him advice on how to proceed. She leads him to an alien child who curses at him and blocks his path. Only when Theodore curses back at the alien, is he allowed to proceed. Playing the game is one of the bonding experiences Theodore and Samantha share that makes him fall for her.
