Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Maud Adams made her second "Bond" appearance as the eponymous character in "Octopussy", but her first was as the romantic partner of the villain in which film?

Answer: The Man with the Golden Gun

Maud Adams had worked as a model since the mid-1960s when she began her acting career in the 1970 film "The Boys in the Band". Her first significant role however was as Andrea Anders, the lover of Scaramanga, the eponymous assassin in "The Man with the Golden Gun". Nine years after the film's release, the thirteenth film in the series, "Octopussy", was in pre-production with a search on to find someone to play the title character.

A major casting process involving the testing of actresses from South Asia, and then white actresses who could pass as Indian, led to a dead end.

As a result, producer 'Cubby' Broccoli, who had been impressed with Adams' work in "The Man with the Golden Gun", instructed that she be approached. Adams, who had been employed to take part in screen tests for potential new actors to play James Bond, agreed and thus became the first actress to play two different Bond Girls.
2. George Baker appeared as Sir Hilary Bray from the Royal College of Arms in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", but he subsequently appeared in which film as a British naval officer?

Answer: The Spy Who Loved Me

Although George Baker's first credited role in a "James Bond" film was as the genealogist Sir Hilary Bray in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", two years prior to the film's release he had made an uncredited appearance as a NASA engineer in "You Only Live Twice".

In his role as Bray, Baker not only had to play his own character, but is also one of the rare instances of someone else also playing Bond - in the film, Bond, played by George Lazenby, impersonates Bray in an effort to find out what Blofeld's scheme is.

As it was felt that Lazenby's impersonation of Baker's voice was not convincing enough, Baker dubbed all of Bond's dialogue in the scenes where the character is playing Bray. Eight years after the release of "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", Baker was cast in the relatively minor role of Captain Benson, a senior staff officer at the Royal Navy's submarine base at Faslane, in "The Spy Who Loved Me".
3. Joe Don Baker went from playing the villainous Brad Whitaker in "The Living Daylights" to twice appearing as Bond's CIA contact Jack Wade. In which film did he first appear in the role?

Answer: Goldeneye

Joe Don Baker had been a successful character actor since the mid 1960s when, in 1986, he was cast in the role of arms dealer Brad Whitaker in "The Living Daylights", opposite Timothy Dalton as James Bond. Eight years later, he returned to the "Bond" series in "Goldeneye", Pierce Brosnan's debut in the lead role, as Jack Wade, Bond's CIA contact in St Petersburg, taking on the role that had, in the past, been filled by Felix Leiter.

This made Baker the third actor, following Charles Gray and Walter Gotell, to have appeared in separate "Bond" movies as both an ally and enemy of Bond. Baker returned to the role of Wade for a second and final time in the following film, "Tomorrow Never Dies".
4. Martine Beswick's first appearance came as Zora, one of the two fighting girls in "From Russia With Love", but in which subsequent film does she appear as a British agent?

Answer: Thunderball

Martine Beswick was an Anglo-Jamaican model who had unsuccessfully auditioned for a part in "Dr No" when she was cast in the role of Zora, one of the two gypsy girls fighting over the same man in an infamous scene in "From Russia With Love", opposite Israeli model Aliza Gur as Vida. During their time on set, Beswick became increasingly irritated with Gur's behaviour that led to a build-up of ill-feeling, which translated into a realistic fight sequence encouraged by the film's director, Terence Young. Beswick returned to the "Bond" series in 1965's "Thunderball", when she portrayed Paula Caplan, the local MI6 officer in Nassau, whom Bond works alongside in an effort to find a hijacked British nuclear bomber. Because she had been away from the Caribbean for so long, Beswick needed two weeks of sunbathing in an effort to get her colouring to appear as someone who lived in the region.
5. Walter Gotell made the first of his six appearances as General Gogol of the KGB opposite Roger Moore's Bond in "The Spy Who Loved Me". However, his first "Bond" appearance came during Sean Connery's time in the lead role in which film?

Answer: From Russia With Love

Although best known for his six successive appearances as KGB General Gogol from "The Spy Who Loved Me" to "The Living Daylights", German actor Walter Gotell's first appearance in a "Bond" film came in 1963 when he played Morzeny, the head of SPECTRE's training establishment, SPECTRE Island.

In this role, he is part of the series' first pre-title sequence, which sees a training run of the planned assassination of James Bond. Gotell's return to the series saw him take the role of General Gogol, the Soviet eqivalent of 'M', with the role usually played as, if not an outright ally of Bond, then at least a respectful competitor, which is seen most prominently in "For Your Eyes Only". Gogol was intended to have a significant role in "The Living Daylights", but Walter Gotell's failing health saw his part scaled back, with the character of General Pushkin, played by John Rhys Davies, instead created to fulfill the part planned for Gogol.
6. Charles Gray was the third named actor to play Blofeld when he appeared in "Diamonds Are Forever", but in which film had he previously appeared as an ally of Bond?

Answer: You Only Live Twice

Charles Gray had been an established character actor throughout the 1960s when he achieved his big break in 1967, first in a significant role in the film "The Night of the Generals", before being cast as 'Dikko' Henderson, a British Intelligence operative, in "You Only Live Twice".

In the film, Henderson is somewhat of an eccentric, living in a hybrid Japanese / British style in Tokyo. "You Only Live Twice" was the first film in which Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the head of SPECTRE, was seen in full, played by Donald Pleasance. Four years later, in "Diamonds Are Forever", Gray returned to the "Bond" series to become the third actor in three films to play Blofeld (the character had been played by Telly Savalas in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"). Like his two predecessors, Gray brought his own iteration to the character, with his Blofeld softly-spoken, urbane and suave.
7. Burt Kwouk played one of Blofeld's unnamed SPECTRE henchmen in "You Only Live Twice", but he also appeared as a representative of the Chinese government in which film?

Answer: Goldfinger

Burt Kwouk is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Cato, the manservant of Inspector Clouseau, in the "Pink Panther" series. However, the same year as Kwouk's first appearance as Cato also saw him appear as Mr Ling in "Goldfinger". Mr Ling is an expert in nuclear fission sent by the Chinese to help Auric Goldfinger with his plan to irradiate the US supply of gold bullion. Three years later, Kwouk was cast as Number Three, one of the SPECTRE operatives in the giant volcano hideaway from which the organisation was launching a rocket to hijack US and Soviet spacecraft.

The unnamed operative (who was portrayed as Japanese, despite Kwouk being ethnically Chinese) is one of the senior SPECTRE members responsible for the operation of the facility under the direction of Blofeld.

In the same year, 1967, Kwouk was one of a number of actors that had appeared in the "Bond" series, including Ursula Andress and Vladek Sheybal, to also make an appearance in the spoof "Casino Royale".
8. Marc Lawrence played Rodney, a mob associate of Francisco Scaramanga who became the hit man's first on-screen victim in "The Man with the Golden Gun", but he had previously appeared in a similar role in which film?

Answer: Diamonds Are Forever

Marc Lawrence's acting career had begun in the 1930s when he was a contract player with Columbia Pictures, with his brooding appearance and thick accent often leading to his playing 'heavies'. Having been blacklisted during the 1950s, his career in the United States resumed in the 1960s, and eventually led to his being cast in "Diamonds Are Forever" as the leader of a gang of hoods working as part of Blofeld's diamond smuggling operation. Three years later, he played the role of Rodney, a mob associate of Scaramanga, who has been hired to kill the hit-man. Rodney appears solely in the pre-title sequence of "The Man with the Golden Gun".

A theory amongst fans of the "Bond" series exists which posits that Lawrence in fact played the character twice, meaning that Rodney is in fact the leader of the gang in "Diamonds Are Forever".
9. Shane Rimmer had already made two appearances in "Bond" films prior to his first credited appearance in which film?

Answer: The Spy Who Loved Me

Canadian actor Shane Rimmer was a regular on British television for many years, occupying the position of what he described as "Rent-a-Yank", often appearing in supporting roles as an American. His first appearance in a "Bond" movie came in "You Only Live Twice", where he was an unnamed and uncredited NASA controller. Four years later, in "Diamonds Are Forever", Rimmer played the larger role of Tom, the Head of Security at Willard Whyte's space research facility near Las Vegas.

However, his third and most significant role in the series (and the only one for which he was credited) came in "The Spy Who Loved Me" when he played Commander Carter, the commanding officer of the submarine USS Wayne, which Bond uses as part of his investigation into Karl Stromberg. Rimmer's contemporary, American actor Ed Bishop, who was another that had made a career in the UK as a so-called "Rent-a-Yank", also appeared uncredited in both "You Only Live Twice" (as a NASA CapCom) and "Diamonds Are Forever" (as Klaus Hergersheimer).
10. Felix Leiter has appeared in a number of films as Bond's major CIA contact, usually played by a different actor each time. Two actors however have portrayed the character more than once - Jeffrey Wright was the second, but who was the first?

Answer: David Hedison

David Hedison originally played Felix Leiter in "Live and Let Die" in 1973. At the time, Hedison was perhaps best known for his role as Captain Crane, the commanding officer of the futuristic submarine USOS Seaview in the TV series "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea".

In 1972, during a dinner with screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz, Hedison was asked whether he might like to play the character of Felix Leiter, to which Hedison readily agreed, excited at the prospect of working with Sean Connery. However, despite Connery being replaced in the role of James Bond by Roger Moore, Hedison remained in the role, having been a friend of Moore. Sixteen years later, Hedison was asked to reprise the role, this time alongside Timothy Dalton in "Licence to Kill".

This made him the first actor to play Leiter twice (Jack Lord, who played the character in "Dr No", was approached to do "Goldfinger", but turned it down due to the restrictive nature of the contract offered), as well as the first to play the character opposite two different actors playing James Bond.
