Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Derice Bannock is training to be a 100m runner at which Summer Olympic Games, occurring in the same year as the Winter Olympics featured in the film?

Answer: Seoul

The opening of the film depicts Derice running around Jamaica as part of his training for the event. 1988 was the penultimate instance of the Summer and Winter Olympics taking part in the same year, with the final being Barcelona/Albertville in 1992. Los Angeles hosted the Summer Games in 1984 while Sydney were hosts in the year 2000.
2. Which one of the team takes part in a push cart derby in the film, showing his aptitude for bobsledding?

Answer: Sanka Coffie

We first see Sanka when he is about to take part in a pushcart race in Jamaica. He wins the race but crashes at the end, much to the hilarity of all those watching. Sanka is good friends with Derice and is often remembered for his 'lucky egg' that he kisses before each race.
3. In the end Derice doesn't make it onto the Jamaican sprint team. Which character was responsible for falling and tripping him up in trials?

Answer: Junior Bevil

Both Junior Bevil and Yul Brenner were in the trials with Derice but it was Junior who slipped up during the final qualifying race, causing the others to fall as well. As Derice gets up he can see the others sprinters finishing the race. Kurt Hemphill is an American who coached team USA during the 1972 Winter Olympics.
4. After not making the team, Derice pleads his case to Coolidge, the man in charge of the Jamaican Olympic team selection, who says no to a second race. Derice gets the idea of bobsledding after seeing a picture of which member of his family in a photo on Coolidge's wall?

Answer: His father

Derice's father was also a sprinter and the photo is of his father and Irivng Blitzer, who had tried to convince Ben (Derice's father) to take up bobsledding. Derice hears that Blitzer is living on the island and takes the photo and goes to see him.
5. Derice seeks coaching from disgraced bobsledding champion Irving Blitzer. Is he keen to help the first time Derice suggests the idea of forming a Jamaican bobsled team?

Answer: No

When Derice first suggests the idea, Blitzer is not willing to comply at all. Derice has already recruited his good friend Sanka and eventually convinces Irv to hold a session to sign up two more people for the team. The third and fourth team members are Derice's fellow sprinters Yul Brenner and Junior Bevil.
6. The team are forced to raise their own funding. Most of the money comes from the sale of which object by Junior?

Answer: Car

The team attempt to employ many different money making schemes. Amongst them are Yul arm wrestling people for money, selling kisses and singing the famous song "nuff people say they know they can't believe, Jamaica we have a bobsled team". However, all of these efforts give them little money and Junior sells his car, saying that he still feels bad for tripping Derice and Yul at the Olympic trials.
7. Upon arrival at the Olympic Games, the team are without a sled. Irv manages to secure them a backup sled from which bobsled team?

Answer: USA

Irv speaks to his old friend Roger, who reluctantly allows the Jamaican team to use one of the back up sleds for the American team. The Swiss team are somewhat idols for the Jamaicans, as Derice sees them practising and they are one of the best teams in the world.
8. Which of the four team members carries around a picture of Buckingham Palace?

Answer: Yul Brenner

Yul Brenner tells Sanka and Junior that when he wins the Olympics he will leave 'the island' (Jamaica) and shows them the picture of the house he wants to live in once he's famous. Sanka just laughs and tells him he'll need to marry the Queen of England if he wants to live in Buckingham Palace.
9. While on a night out at a bar, Yul tells Junior that he needs to stick up for himself. Taking his advice, Junior confronts the members of which national team, who had sneered at the Jamaicans earlier in the day?

Answer: East Germany

The leader of the East German national team is Josef Grool. Earlier in the day he had told the Jamaicans to 'go home'. Although they stayed silent at the time, when Junior stood up to Grool a huge bar fight started between Yul, Junior and Sanka and the East German team.
10. In order to qualify for the main event, each team must complete a qualifying run in under a minute. Did the Jamaican team achieve this?

Answer: Yes

They certainly did! Despite many people doubting their chances, the Jamaicans recorded a time of 59.46 seconds to qualify for the main event. Although they didn't win a medal they were by no means the worst team in the competition and finished emotionally on their final run, after crashing part way through the course.
