Answer: In Dubious Battle

"In Dubious Battle" is a 2016 film produced by, directed by and starring James Franco. The film is based on the novel "In Dubious Battle" by John Steinbeck, of whom Franco is a huge fan. Franco stars as Mac McLeod who is leading a labor fight for apple pickers.

He is joined in this effort by newbie Jim (Nathan Wolff) and some of the laborers, who are being paid one dollar a day for their grueling work.
2. Aron Ralston, whose arm is trapped under a boulder

Answer: 127 Hours

"127 Hours" is a 2010 film based on the true story of Aron Ralston (played by Franco), an adventurer who is trapped in Canyonlands National Park when a boulder falls on his arm. Aron records his ordeal via his camera but after days without being rescued, he starts contemplating cutting his trapped arm off with his knife. Franco was nominated for Best Actor at the 2011 Academy Awards (which he cohosted with Anne Hathaway) for this role but lost to Colin Firth for "The King's Speech".
3. Scott Smith, the gay lover of a San Francisco politician

"Milk" is a 2008 biographical film based on the life of San Francisco Board of Supervisors Member Harvey Milk (Sean Penn). Milk was the first openly gay politician elected to office in California (which happened in 1977). James Franco plays Scott Smith, Milk's lover whom he met in New York City. Milk and Smith moved to San Francisco's Castro District to live in a more gay-friendly neighborhood but still find opposition even there.

As a result, Milk became a gay rights activist. Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone (Victor Garber) were assassinated in 1978 by Dan White (Josh Brolin), a disgruntled former member of the board.
4. Saul Silver, a marijuana dealer

Answer: Pineapple Express

"Pineapple Express" is a 2008 comedy film starring Seth Rogen as Dale Denton and James Franco as Dale's dealer Saul Silver. Dale and Saul witness a murder but panic and flee the scene, accidentally leaving their rare strain of marijuana behind which can be traced back to Saul. Dale and Saul run off and find themselves in hilarious situations as they avoid the police and drug lords.
5. Dr. Mark Flanner, whose estranged father wants to reconnect

In this 2008 romantic film, Diane Lane plays Adrienne Willis, a woman who is thinking about reconnecting with her estranged husband Jack (Christopher Meloni). Adrienne spends a week watching her friend's bed and breakfast where she meets and falls in love with Dr. Paul Flanner (Richard Gere). Dr. Flanner is on his way to South America to reconnect with his estranged son Mark, played by James Franco.
6. Harry Osborn, son of the Green Goblin

James Franco first played Harry Osborn in the 2002 film "Spider-Man" and continued the role in the franchise's sequels. Harry is Peter Parker/Spider-Man's (Tobey Maguire) best friend but does not know Peter is Spider-Man. Harry's father Norman (Willem Dafoe) is the Green Goblin, one of Spider-Man's enemies. Harry is unaware of his father's identity but vows vengeance on Spider-Man for his father's death.

"The Adderall Diaries" is a 2015 film based on the true story of Stephen Elliott, an author with a drug problem. Elliot had an abusive childhood and as an adult, continues to take drugs to deal with his problems. He is writing a memoir about Hans Reiser (Christian Slater) a software developer on trial for his wife's murder. Meanwhile, Elliot's previous book is released, which is about his childhood and his abusive father (Ed Harris).
8. Dave Skylark, talk show host turned CIA assassin

Answer: The Interview

"The Interview" is a 2014 comedy film starring James Franco as Dave Skylark and Seth Rogen as Aaron Rapaport. Dave is the host of a celebrity talk show while Aaron is his producer. Aaron lands an interview North Korean leader Kim Jong-un (Randall Park). The CIA asks Dave and Aaron to assassinate the Kim Jong-un via ricin during the interview.

This film caused controversy in North Korea as that country threatened retaliatory measures against the United States if the movie was released. The film was ultimately delayed and released digitally before airing in theaters. Some major theater chains refused to screen the film for safety reasons.
9. Marty Freeman, who is killed by a hitman

Answer: The Iceman

"The Iceman" is a 2013 crime film based on the true story of Richard Kuklinski (Michael Shannon), a hitman for mobster Roy DeMeo (Ray Liotta). Kuklinski is nicknamed the Iceman. He refuses to kill a teenage girl who witnesses a hit and is put on suspension.

However, during his suspension he starts taking outside hit jobs and becomes a target of DeMeo's. James Franco plays Marty Freeman, one of Kuklinski's first hits.
10. Benjy Compson, a mentally challenged southerner

Answer: The Sound and the Fury

This 2014 film is adapted from the novel "The Sound and the Fury" by William Faulkner, one of Franco's favorite authors. Franco plays Benjy Compson, a mentally handicapped young man. The film focuses on the lives of the Compson family who struggle as the South changes during the turn of the 20th century. Tim Blake Nelson plays Compson patriarch Jason and Loretta DeVine plays Dilsey, the family's loyal servant, despite being constantly mistreated by the Compsons.
