Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Edward Scissorhands", what symbol is on the baseball hat that Edward wears when breaking into Jim's house?

Answer: Red 'V'

He wears a dark blue cap with a red 'V' on the front of it. Jim tells Edward that the person who lives in the house that they are breaking into stole something from him, and they want to get it back. Later on Edward admits to Kim that he knew it was Jim's house, and that he did it for her. We come to realise Edward is in love with Kim and this is why he does it.
Jim and Kim run away when the alarm starts going off. At least Kim actually feels guilty for leaving Edward behind, and says they should go back.
"Edward Scissorhands" is the heart-warming tale of Edward, a mechanical man, designed and made by an old inventor. Unfortunately, the inventor dies and doesn't have time to complete Edward, leaving him with scissors for hands. The inventor originally designed Edward around a machine he already had, which also had 'scissorhands' and was used to cut salad.
2. In "Chocolat", how many necklaces does Vianne buy from Johnny Depp's character, Roux?

Answer: Two

Vianne buys two necklaces from Roux. She isn't going to at first, because she thinks they are too expensive. Then she sees the Mayor watching, so she buys some, to show she isn't going to be prejudiced towards the travellers, like the rest of the town is.

"Chocolat" is a film about Vianne and her daughter Anouk, who arrive in a French town and open up a chocolate shop, called Chocolaterie Maya. However, they do this during the time of Lent, which makes people begin to question the morality of the tight community. When Roux arrives, Vianne realises she was made to feel like an outsider, so she does not do the same to Roux, and she gives him a chance.
3. In "Benny and Joon", how old is Johnny Depp's character, the loveable Sam?

Answer: 26

His cousin Mike says, of Sam, "He's 26 and can't even read. He spends all day polishing my plastic forks."
"Benny and Joon" was released in 1993. It stars Mary Stuart Masterson as Joon. She is a mentally ill woman who falls for the loveable Sam, (Johnny Depp's character.) Sam is wacky and does all sorts of crazy things throughout the movie. One of his idols is Buster Keaton. We see Sam reading a book about him as he arrives on the train, at the start of the film. The movie stars Aidan Quinn as Joon's brother, who has cared for her since their parents died in a car crash.
4. Who has a brief appearance as a hitchhiker in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"?

Answer: Tobey Maguire

Tobey Maguire has long blonde hair in this film. He then went on to star in the films "Pleasantville" (1998), "The Cider House Rules" (1999), "Spiderman" (2002) and "Seabiscuit" (2003). Johnny Depp plays Raoul Duke, a journalist who takes a trip to Las Vegas with his friend, played by Benicio Del Toro, who is a lawyer.

They have a suitcase full of drugs, and have an assortment of adventures in their minds. One of my favourite scenes is where they stop to pick up the hitchhiker. They have been hallucinating, and Johnny's character 'sees' a lot of bats.

They pull over in the car and he says, "We can't stop here, it's bat country!"
5. In "Donnie Brasco", Joe Pistone has 3 daughters. What are the 2 names we know?

Answer: Amanda and Jessica

Johnny Depp plays Joe Pistone. Only the names of two of his three daughters are credited in the film. Maggie is of course the name of Joe's wife in the film.
There is an amusing scene where Joe is sitting at the table with his three daughters, who are giving him the silent treatment.
Joe: "I bet you can't get through breakfast without saying 3 words."
Daughter: "You lose."
"Donnie Brasco" is a film about Joe Pistone, aka Donnie Brasco, an undercover FBI agent, who infiltrates a mafia gang. Unfortunately he befriends the leader, called Lefty, played by Al Pacino. He almost sacrifices his marriage to his wife Maggie, played by Anne Heche, and his relationship with his daughters, because of his actions with the gang.
6. What colour are the roses Benny gives to Ruthie in "Benny and Joon"?

Answer: White

He hands Ruthie the white roses.
Ruthie: "Haven't we tried this before?" She says, as she accepts the flowers.
Benny: "Yeah, but my life's a lot less complicated now. Is Joon inside?"
Ruthie: "Yeah."
Benny: "Ok."
Then he goes inside the building, and sees Sam (Depp) and Joon inside their own apartment, making grilled cheese sandwiches with the iron. Benny leaves the pink roses at their door.
Benny gives Ruthie flowers to apologise because he was cruel to her earlier on. She offered him a beer after he had driven her home and he snapped at her, telling her that his life was pretty complicated. She took offence at this, and wasn't happy with him at all. He brings Joon flowers because she has just moved into a new apartment with Sam, and although Benny is very protective of her, he is happy she is making a life on her own, without him.
Making grilled cheese sandwiches with the iron is just one of many eccentric but amusing things Sam does. Earlier on we see him making bread rolls dance to music in the cafe. He also performs tricks, in the park, to an audience and makes mashed potatoes with a tennis racket.
7. What's the name of the cream Jill eats in "The Astronauts Wife"?

Answer: Reddi Wip

After she finds out she is pregnant with twins, Jill is dancing around the kitchen of their new home in the town. She opens the fridge and the can of cream is standing on a shelf in the door. We see the name 'Reddi Wip' briefly, just before she picks it up, squirts some into her mouth and then replaces it in the door.

She then closes the door to find Spencer, her husband, standing behind it. "The Astronauts Wife" is about Spencer Armacost, played by Depp, who is an astronaut. On one journey into space, Spencer and his partner, Captain Alex Streck, (Nick Cassavetes) lose contact with everything for 2 minutes.

When they arrive back on Earth, strange things begin to occur. Captain Streck dies, and both his wife and Spencer's wife, Jill, find out they are pregnant with twins. Streck's wife kills herself in the shower, but Jill goes on to have the babies. We find out that some kind of evil got into Spencer during those two minutes, and will be passed on through the babies.
8. In "A Nightmare on Elm Street", does Glen Lantz have his television turned on when he is killed?

Answer: Yes

We see Johnny Depp's character die a horrific death, being sucked down through his bed by the terrifying Freddie Kruger.
Earlier in the film, we hear Glen's mum asking him how he can listen to the television and his music at the same time. He says he doesn't listen to the television, he just watches it.
In the scene where he dies, we see him asleep with his headphones on, still playing music, but we can hear the television announcements.
"A Nightmare on Elm Street" is a horror film directed by Wes Craven in 1984, giving Johnny Depp his debut in acting, when he was just 21 years old.
In the film, a terrifying child abuser takes revenge on the people who burnt him alive, by coming for their children in their dreams, and killing them in gory and inhumane ways. "A Nightmare on Elm Street" was followed up by many sequels, of which Johnny Depp only starred in one, "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare", in 1991.
9. What colour are the cloaks Vianne and Anouk wear in "Chocolat"?

Answer: Red

"One winter day a sly wind blew in from the north." This is what the narrator tells us as we see Vianne and Anouk arriving in the French town. When Armande asks, "Where are you from?" Vianne replies, "Well, we lived in Andalusia for a while. Let me see. Before that Vienna...and before that...Pavia." We learn later on that they are travelers, just like Vianne's parents. Vianne's daughter Anouk has an invisible pet kangaroo called Pantoufl. Roux, the "river-rat", played by Depp tells Pantoufl off, because Anouk says he doesn't like chocolate even though he hasn't tried it. Roux is asked whether he likes worms, and he says no even though he hasn't tried them. We see an amusing scene where Roux pretends to eats a worm.

He describes it as "Subtle...zesty...disgusting!" He then releases the worm, which he had hidden in his hand.
10. Which hand does Edward use to break into Jim's house, in "Edward Scissorhands"?

Answer: Left

Jim uses Edwards 'Scissor' hands to unlock his front door, so he can break into his father's study and steal money from him.
We see Edward do this once before, when Kim is locked outside her house, he unlocks the door for her. Unfortunately at Jim's house, the alarm goes off. Jim and Kim run away, leaving poor Edward to get arrested and take the blame. He doesn't tell the police what really happened because he doesn't want to get Kim into trouble. He cares for her so much.
"Edward Scissorhands" was released in 1990, and is directed by Tim Burton. This is the first film Depp and Burton worked on together, but not the last. They went on to make "Ed Wood" in 1994. Depp starred as the cross-dressing film writer and director, known for being a complete failure. He played alongside Sarah Jessica Parker. Depp, unlike Ed Wood is outstanding at acting and directing, as we have seen. Depp directed and starred in "The Brave" in 1997.
Johnny Depp and Tim Burton then worked on "Sleepy Hollow" in 1999, with Christina Ricci. Depp also appeared in "The Man Who Cried" with Ricci, in 2000. Depp starred in Burton's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".
