Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Johnny Depp has worked together with director Tim Burton on a number of projects. Which 'cutting edge' film was their first?

Answer: Edward Scissorhands

Johnny Depp is a personal friend of director Tim Burton, as well as having starred in many of his movies. Their first collaboration was in the 1990 hit film "Edward Scissorhands". This romantic-comedy mixes in aspects of the macabre and was Vincent Price's last theatrical performance.

The movie explores discrimination against those who are different and love between those from different backgrounds. Depp's character is an unfinished human creation that has scissors for hands and a gothic look about him that scares many people.

The movie received many award nominations and helped make Johnny Depp a star.
2. In one of his very early films, Johnny Depp played a soldier in which Academy-Award winning 1986 movie by Oliver Stone?

Answer: Platoon

"Platoon," the story of a young soldier and his experiences in the Vietnam War, won the Oscar for the Best Picture of 1986. Depp plays a soldier named Gator Lerner, who befriends the lead character, Chris Taylor, played by Charlie Sheen. Lerner, who acts as a translator and a moral force for the platoon, is later caught in a firefight and dies.
3. Johnny Depp took on the role of a Washington Irving literary character previously portrayed in a Disney film. What was Johnny's movie version called?

Answer: Sleepy Hollow

Walt Disney's "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad" was released in theaters in 1949, with the separated "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" on its own in 1958. It was a mostly humerous look at this mostly dark Washington Irving short story, originally published in 1820 as part of a collection of short stories. Tim Burton's dark rendition has Depp playing Ichabod Crane as a constable (instead of the original schoolteacher) coming to investigate a series of mysterious murders.

It was released in theaters in 1999.
4. Which real-life character did Johnny Depp portray in the 2009 biographical-crime drama "Public Enemies"?

Answer: John Dillinger

"Public Enemies" (2009), directed by Michael Mann, featured Johnny Depp as American gangster John Dillinger. The movie takes place during the Great Depression and follows Dillinger through his crimes, his attempts at escape, and his final downfall. Christian Bale plays FBI agent Melvin Purvis who was responsible for the capture of not only Dillinger, but also Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd.

This movie featured Depp in a work of non-fiction as opposed to his many appearances as characters of fiction and/or fantasy.

Many critics praised the movie for its attempt to portray the reality of Dillinger's life instead of romanticizing it, as had been done in the past.
5. One of Johnny Depp's most charming and attractive characters is Roux, from the 2000 film "Chocolat." Who is his leading lady in that yummy picture?

Answer: Juliette Binoche

Directed by Lasse Hallstrom, "Chocolat" tells the story of Binoche's character, a young mother, who arrives in a small French town in 1959 with her little daughter and opens a chocolate shop. She soon makes friends among the villagers but attracts the censure of others, including the local mayor.

She meets Roux, a gypsy who travels along the nearby river and is camped on the bank. The couple spark a romance, and thanks to their efforts and influence, many lives are changed in the village. The film also stars Judi Dench, Carrie-Anne Moss, Lena Olin, Alfred Molina, and Leslie Caron.
6. Johnny's character Captain Jack Sparrow from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" film series was based on the legendary pirate Edward Teach.

Answer: False

Captain Jack Sparrow was created by screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, and was originally only intended to be a supporting character. With Johnny spectacularly playing the part, though, his role became much more prominent.

Captain Jack Sparrow was not based on Edward Teach (or Blackbeard, who made his own appearance in the fourth film "On Stranger Tides"), but was created as an amalgam of the creative minds of the aforementioned screenwriters and the imagination of Johnny Depp, who has helped develop the character's history (to better play the role).
7. Which character did Johnny play in "Finding Neverland" that earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor?

Answer: J.M. Barrie

Depp portrayed playwright J.M. Barrie in this 2004 semi-autobiographical film that tells the story of the writing and production of "Peter Pan", against the backdrop of Barrie's friendship with a young widow, played by Kate Winslet, and her sons. His friendship and play with the boys inspires him to write a play about a boy who wishes never to grow up. Although the producers are skeptical about putting on the play, it becomes a great success, helped along by the delight of a group of children Barrie plants in the opening-night audience. As a gift to the widow, who is too ill to go to the theater to see the play, Barrie arranges for a version of it to be produced in her home.

This nomination for Best Actor was Depp's second in as many years. His first nomination came for the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl".
8. In which of the following 2001 films did Johnny Depp portray real-life cocaine smuggler, George Jung?

Answer: Blow

Released in 2001 and directed by Ted Demme, "Blow" was a biopic drama about drug smuggler George Jung and his dealings with drug kingpins Pablo Escobar, Carlos Lehder Rivas and the powerful Medellin drug cartel. The movie chronicles how Jung came from a poor background in Massachusetts.

As a young man he learns how much money he can make dealing marijuana. He progresses into selling cocaine and buying large quantities directly from Mexican drug cartels. After a couple of stints in prison he goes to Colombia and starts all over again.

In the end he is caught and sentenced to 60 years in prison. One of the most outstanding features of this movie, according to many fans, is the compilation of 1970's rock music that helps bring the story to life.
9. Which of these films did not feature BOTH Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter?

Answer: Benny & Joon

As of 2013, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter have worked together on six films (five of them also directed by Tim Burton). They are:

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2005)
"Corpse Bride" (2005)
"Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" (2007)
"Alice in Wonderland" (2010)
"Dark Shadows" (2012)
"The Lone Ranger" (2013)

In the 1993 film "Benny & Joon", Depp co-starred with Aidan Quinn (Benny) and Mary Stuart Masterson (Benny's sister Juniper) in a heartwarming story about a mentally ill young girl falling for Depp (Benny's friend Mike's cousin Sam), who rather oddly models himself after Buster Keaton.
10. In which 2013 film did Johnny reprise a role that had previously been performed by Jay Silverheels and Michael Horse?

Answer: The Lone Ranger

Besides Depp as Tonto, the film starred Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger, William Fichtner, Helena Bonham Carter, and Tom Wilkinson; and was directed by Gore Verbinski, from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films. In this latest saga about the Lone Ranger, Tonto tells the story of how he and the Lone Ranger came to 'work together' to a young boy in a museum (Tonto is part of a display on Native Americans).

Despite the stellar cast and proven production team, the film was panned by the critics, and barely made back its budget of $225 million, grossing around $244 million, which in the tortured calculus of Hollywood, makes it a financial flop. Not long after these sorry figures were reported, Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney Studios parted company.
