2. This Ealing comedy based on a real life shipwreck is about Scottish Islanders 'rescuing' the ship's cargo and hiding it all over the island from the HMS Custom officers. Both the film and the cargo have a 'cheering' effect. What movie is this?

Answer: Whisky Galore

The SS Politician sank in 1941 in the Outer Hebrides just off the Isle of Eriskay, named The Isle of Todday in the film. The cargo included a quarter of a million bottles of whisky, which the islanders then salvaged and secreted all over the island from the customs officers. Bottles of the whisky are still being found washed up on the beach to this day and sell for thousands of pounds. "Whisky Galore" was written by Sir Comptom Mckenzie who also wrote "Monarch of the Glen" on which the successful TV series was based.

Answer: Passport to Pimlico

"Passport to Pimlico" from 1949 was an antidote to the doom and gloom of the time and is a much loved Ealing Comedy.

An old treaty is found that leads Pimlico to declare independence from the rest of UK. The film follows the ups and down and squabbles that follow while the locals work out the best way to deal with being a foreign enclave.

9. The year 1995 brought an American comedy movie to the screen starring Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze and John Leguizamo. Titled "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar", this movie is a typical old-time road-trip from New York to Los Angeles. The stars carry a lucky photo of the famous actress Julie Newmar (stolen from a restaurant wall). What is the unusual occupation of the heroes?

Answer: Drag Queens

This 1995 film follows three drag queens travelling from New York to Los Angeles and is packed full of adventures and interesting people they met along the way. They carry an autographed photo of the first actress who played Catwoman as inspiration on their quest.

Julie Newmar was the original Catwoman in the 1960s Batman series. Born in 1933, she is a lovely actress - her latest appearances included a cameo in a George Michael video in 1992 and her role in "Too Wong Foo.."

As part of the plot, the trio are stranded in the small town of "Synderville". This was filmed in a very small rural town outside of my home in Nebraska. Many locals (me, too!) were extras in the film and were able to meet-and-greet the stars. (Wesley Snipes was very charming.)

10. Based on a play, this 1996 Singaporean comedy film focuses on the trials and wackiness of the dreaded conscription of National Service, with the tagline, 'From Real Blur, to Real Men'. What is this crazy coming of age comedy?

Answer: Army Daze

"Army Daze" is a classic in Singapore, notably for poking on the many stereotypes that are seen within the regiments and how young men try to cope with the lifestyle of the barracks. The film is told from the view point of a naive upper class 18 year old named Malcolm, who finds himself trying to stay sane whilst his other bunk mates do many schemes and tricks to either get out, or do a lesser role in the army without any marching or physical activities. It remains one of the most successful and endearing films in Singapore.
