Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the actor who plays happy-go-lucky Skip Engblom, the fatherly-type, hippie surf shop owner and Zephyr skate team sponsor who gently motivates the Z-Boys to be the best?

Answer: Heath Ledger

Heath actually wore prosthetic teeth and adapted his accent to excellently mimic the real Skip Engblom, the Zephyr surf shop owner and founder of the Zephyr Skateboard Team. Skip Engblom also has a cameo in "Lords of Dogtown" as a starter at a skateboarding event.
2. Jay Boy Adams, Tony Alva, and Stacy Peralta all have cameo appearances in the movie.

Answer: True

The most famous of all the former Z-Boys, Adams, Alva, and Peralta, all appear in the movie. Adams appears in the party scene at Jay Boy's house giving Jay five dollars for beer. Stacy Peralta appears as the director in the "Charlie's Angels" episode in which his character appears. Tony Alva appears in the party scene at Jay Boy's house, talking about how he is going to live in Oregon. Peralta and Alva also performed as stunt doubles in some of the skating scenes.
3. Complete this statement by Skip Engblom, "__________ ____ with pride man!"

Answer: Wear it

Skip says this line twice in the movie in regard to the Zephyr team shirts while passing them out in the Zephyr shop, and once, when giving Stacy Peralta his team shirt. In one humorous scene from the movie, when the Z-Boys first get their team shirts, Jay Boy mimics Skip's speech perfectly.
4. Who plays the hardcore, excitable, and caring skater Jay Boy Adams, the Z-Boy whose life was a little rough growing up in Venice Beach?

Answer: Emile Hirsch

Emile was actually the only actor who had skated before the film. The others had to learn. Emile even shaved his head in the film. Emile practiced skateboarding stunts by watching old videos of the real Jay Boy Adams.
5. In the film, a toy company wants Jay Boy to be a sponsor for their product, and they want him to sing the theme song for a commercial. What is this toy?

Answer: Slinky

According to interviews with the real Jay Boy Adams, this never happened in real life. It is simply an addition to the story line of the movie. However, in the film, Jay Boy recites but refuses to sing the song or endorse the product.
6. Johnny Knoxville appears as a minor character in the movie.

Answer: True

Johnny Knoxille appears as Topper Burkes, a rival to Skip Engblom and the Zephyr Skate team. He lures Tony Alva away from the Z-Boys Team.
7. When surfing, the Venice Beach crowd have a favorite break (wave riding spot). What is the name the surfers give to their favorite spot?

Answer: The Cove

The Cove was an actual location on Venice Beach at the site of the Ocean Park Amusement Pier which burned down in the early 1970's. This is actually explained and referred to in the movie. It provides the opening scene for the movie when the older surfers are surfing first, and then, they allow the young grommets (inexperienced surfers) - Tony, Jay Boy, and Stacy - to surf after they have finished.
8. What material/type of skateboarding wheels revolutionized the industry as depicted in the movie?

Answer: Urethane

Urethane enabled skateboarders to do the tight turns and radical moves that they previously could only do on a surfboard. The actor/character who first shows Skip and the Z-Boys urethane skateboard wheels is comic Mitch Hedberg who passed away in March of 2005.
9. Jay Boy Adams does not share the same celebrity as his skating mates. Jay Boy actually did jail time.

Answer: True

Jay Boy Adams, according to interviews, became involved with gangs and drugs, and he spent time in jail as a result. He virtually walked away from the skateboarding industry at the height of his career. At the end of the film, just before the credits roll, the skaters are skating a pool, when little biographical inserts tell about what happened to them later in life.
10. What kind of tattoo does Jay Boy Adams have on his head?

Answer: A zipper

Jay Boy Adams actually does have a zipper tattooed on his head. It is only visible if his head is shaved, and Emile Hirsch (the actor who portrays Jay Boy) sports a copy of the tattoo in the film.
