1. Who are the three main stars in "Marathon Man"?

Answer: Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Olivier and Roy Scheider

Laurence Olivier (Dr Szell) was undergoing treatment for cancer during filming, but still managed to collect a Golden Globe award for best supporting actor. Olivier survived his cancer and passed away in 1989 from renal failure.
2. Which character from the movie is 'the marathon man'?

Answer: Babe

Dustin Hoffman (Babe), lost fifteen pounds and ran up to four miles per day to get in shape for the role. Hoffman was 38 years old when the movie was filmed, but his character was a much younger graduate student.
3. Dr Szell is in America to retrieve some valuables held by his late brother. What valuable items is he trying to collect?

Answer: Diamonds

Dr Szell has taken the diamonds from Jews who were imprisoned in Germany during WW2. The Americans suspect that he will try to retrieve them.

The torture scene had to be shortened as film preview audiences felt sick during screening. The scene is still enough to haunt me each time I visit the dentist.

Usually occurring in adulthood, alexia is the loss of the ability to read.
During the torture scene, Szell indicates he is afflicted with alexia. Alexia is a brain disorder related to dyslexia. During filming Laurence Olivier who played Szell was suffering from cancer and the medications he was taking made it hard to remember more than one or two lines at a time.

Answer: Fell on his own knife

After Dr Szell retrieves the diamonds from the bank he is captured by Babe and forced into a pump house in Central Park. A fight ensues and Babe throws the diamonds down the stairs into the water below and in his desperation to retrieve them, Szell falls down the stairs and impales himself on the knife he has hidden up his sleeve.
