Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which 1896 film can we see May Irwin and John C. Rice have a 15 second kiss?

Answer: The Kiss

"The Kiss", released in 1896, was a black and white silent film that only lasted 47 seconds; it was also known as "The May-Irwin Kiss" or "The Rice-Irwin Kiss". The film depicts the last scene from the musical stage comedy "The Widow Jones" in which Irwin and Rice starred. This was the first film in which an actual kiss took place between a couple, as well as being one of the first films to be shown in public. As a promotional campaign for the musical, the "New York World" newspaper asked the actors to stage the kiss for the camera. When the film was shown, it caused a completely negative effect as people were shocked and horrified at what they had just seen on the screens, causing negative editorials. In some places they even requested the police to take action against the showing of such a scandalous film. One outraged critic wrote "The spectacle of the prolonged pasturing on each other's lips was beastly enough in life size on the stage but magnified to gargantuan proportions and repeated three times over it is absolutely disgusting."

Needless to say, the film became the most popular film for Edison Vitascope in 1896. The film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
2. In which 1924 film can we see dentist McTeague lust for his sedated patient, and end up kissing her on the mouth?

Answer: Greed

In the scene of the famous kiss, the dentist, McTeague, decides that it is best to knock out his patient while he works on her teeth. He is incredibly attracted to her and has a great desire to kiss her; resisting his temptation he pulls himself together and continues drilling. As he continues work, he just can't control his great desire and ends up kissing her. After kissing her he just steps back and continues to work, as if nothing happened.

"Greed" was a silent movie directed by Erich von Stroheim, based on the novel " McTeague : A Story of San Francisco" by Frank Norris. The film depicts the lives of three people who suddenly win the lottery; instead of bringing them good fortune, we see how their lives are torn apart and ruined due to their greed. The making of the film has become a Hollywood legend. Von Stroheim made every possible effort to include in the film all the details depicted in the book. The outcome was a ten hour movie costing over $500.000. The studio, made von Stroheim edit the movie to a more manageable length which he did, cutting it down to four hours. MGM still was not happy with the length, and re-edited without the director's permission, coming out with a two and half hour movie.
3. In which 1926 movie does John Barrymore star as a roguish Casanova who suffers the fury of the Borgia family?

Answer: Don Juan

John Barrymore plays the part of Don Juan de Marana, a well known lover and womanizer, who never trusts women. For a while his attitude drastically changes as he falls in love with Adriana Della Varnese. Adriana is forced to marry rich Count Donati, and therefore Don Juan thinks she has deceived him, which in turn makes him return to his scoundrel attitude. Don Juan doesn't know that Adriana is being used as part of an agreement made between the manipulative Donati and the devious Borgias. Don Juan finds out about Adriana's true love for him, but by this time it's too late as he is thrown in prison, for killing Donati in a duel. He manages to escape and save his Adriana from the Borgias, fleeing to Spain.

Warner Bros reported that Barrymore kissed his two leading ladies 127 times. He also kissed many other female companions throughout the movie, which added up to a total of 191 kisses. Although it is considered a silent movie as there is no spoken dialogue, it was the first one to feature Vitaphone, in which music was integrated into the movie background.
4. In which 1930 movie does legionnaire Gary Cooper meet up with Marlene Dietrich. The title is also the name of an African country?

Answer: Morocco

Marlene Dietrich makes her American film debut in this movie, playing the part of Amy Jolly, a nightclub singer. Amy Jolly is torn between her love for legionnaire Tom Brown (Gary Cooper), and the love of wealthy Monsieur La Bessiere (Adolphe Menjou). Brown is an enlisted man, unable to give her all the comforts she deserves. While wealthy, La Bessiere could provide her with everything she desires, although she isn't in love him. Amy finally accepts La Bessiere's marriage proposal, but on the night of their engagement party she finds out that Tom has been seriously wounded. She decides to run to his side, and once with him she realizes that her love for him is stronger and decides to stay with him.

The famous kiss takes place when she is performing at a night club, dressed in a tuxedo and top hat. In the scene, she approaches a young lady in the audience, who has a flower in her hair and asks "May I have this?" She takes it and smells the flower, and then gives the young woman a kiss on the mouth, for no apparent reason. After the kiss she seductively looks at Tom Brown and casually throws the flower at him. Most probably this is the first time a scene was filmed were two women kiss.
5. In which 1939 movie can we find this quote? "Open your eyes and look at me. No, I don't think I will kiss you - although you need kissing badly. That's what's wrong with you. You should be kissed, and often, and by someone who knows how."

Answer: Gone With the Wind

This line is said when Rhett returns from Paris, bringing Scarlett a fashionable, green hat as a present. She puts it on but backwards and he has to show her how to wear it properly. Scarlett thanks him for the present, but he is not happy with a mere thank you. He wants something in return and hints at a kiss, to which she replies "Well, I won't kiss you for it either". Although she faces him closing her eyes and puckering her lips, to which Rhett decides he won't kiss her.

The film takes place during the American Civil War. It mainly depicts an on-going love/hate relationship between the two main characters, Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) and Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) who never stop quarrelling.
6. Although the record was broken in 2010, the longest recorded kiss in film history was once attributed to the 1941 film "You're in the Army Now". Can you name the actors who kissed in this comedy?

Answer: Jane Wyman & Regis Toomey

The record breaking kiss lasted three minutes and five seconds. The record was held for an incredible amount of years, all the way until 2010, when it was beaten by a few seconds in the movie "Elena Undone". The film is a comedy in which two salesmen end up in the army by a fluke. The two heroes are incapable of following orders and spend most of their training time in detention. During a maneuver they end up trapped in a remote cabin, which is hanging dangerously over a mountain ledge.

The famous screen kiss took place between Jane Wyman, who played the part of Bliss Dobson, and Regis Toomey, who played the part of Capt. Joe Radcliffe. Although the two lovers didn't play a major part in the plot of the movie, the long kiss that took place between them went down in history. It was said that Ronald Reagan, who was Wyman's husband at the time, and who happened to be present on the set, wasn't too thrilled with the scene. Seemingly he went over to Toomey and asked him "How did he manage to keep his wife sitting still for so long?"

She responds with a question: "Now that'd take some figuring. How many men do you think there've been?" He asks again: "I wouldn't know. Can't you give me a rough estimate?" She sarcastically replies, "Not without an adding machine. Do you have your adding machine with you?" When he says he forgot to bring it, she tells him, "Then I guess you won't find out, will you?"
