Oliver & Company Trivia Quiz

Imagine 'Oliver Twist', but with cats and a motley crew of dogs, and you have 'Oliver & Company'. It's one of Disney's lesser-known movies, so I decided to do a quiz on it.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is written on the sign on the box of kittens at the beginning of the film?

Answer: "Kitties need home"

Oliver, a ginger tabby kitten, is one of many kittens in a box hoping to be adopted. All the other kittens are picked up, but Oliver is the only one left and is forced to seek shelter when the box is destroyed by heavy rain.
2. What do Oliver and Dodger steal from Louie?

Answer: Hot dogs

Louie is a grumpy hot dog vendor who dislikes animals, and shoos Oliver away. Dodger and Oliver team up to steal some hot dogs, with Dodger chasing Oliver and Oliver distracting Louie while Dodger steals some sausages. However, Dodger claims the sausages for himself, saying, "The dynamic duo is now a dynamic uno." Oliver is angry and chases him.
3. Where do Fagin and his gang of dogs live?

Answer: On a barge

In 'Oliver Twist', Fagin was a pickpocket who led a gang of child thieves. In 'Oliver & Company', he's still a pickpocket, but instead of children, his gang are dogs. As well as Dodger, there's a hyperactive chihuahua called Tito, an English bulldog called Francis, a saluki called Rita - the only female gang member - and a dimwitted Great Dane called Einstein. Oliver meets the dogs when he follows Dodger back to the barge, and although they are confrontational at first, they calm down once they realise he was the monster Dodger was bragging about.
4. What are the names of Bill Sykes' dobermans?

Answer: Roscoe and DeSoto

In 'Oliver & Company', Bill Sykes is a shipyard agent and loan shark instead of a burglar, though he still has a reputation for being pretty terrifying (as evidenced by the conversation he has while Fagin is in his office, where he talks about putting cement shoes on some poor victim). Fagin is scared of him as he owes Sykes a lot of money, and is trying to steal things to pay him back. Sykes orders him to pay him back within three days, while Roscoe and DeSoto menace Oliver and the gang. Roscoe is the one with the red collar, and DeSoto is the one with the blue collar. Oliver scratches DeSoto's nose, and the dobermans threaten to pay them back.

Bull's Eye, incidentally, is the name of Sykes' dogs in 'Oliver Twist'.
5. What is the name of the little girl in the movie?

Answer: Jenny

Jenny is a rich young girl whose parents are away on business, and Winston, the family butler, is driving her in the family car when the dogs spot it and see a potential target. Einstein bumps into the car, forcing the driver to stop, and Francis pretends to be injured. Tito and Oliver get inside the car while Winston goes out to see what's going on. Tito chews the wires, but gets an electric shock when Oliver is startled by Jenny and accidentally moves the keys, and is thrown out of the car. Jenny finds Oliver tangled in the wires. Winston drives off with Jenny and Oliver.
6. Who provides the voice for Georgette, Jenny's poodle?

Answer: Bette Midler

Georgette, like many poodles in fiction, is very stuck-up. She doesn't take kindly to having to share the house with a cat, and is not at all pleased to see Oliver eating out of her bowl. Jenny singing 'Good Company' to Oliver while she plays the piano does not help the situation.

Bette Midler, incidentally, isn't the only pop star in the cast - Billy Joel is the voice of Dodger.
7. Which member of the gang has a crush on Georgette?

Answer: Tito

Tito immediately takes a fancy with Georgette when the gang invade Jenny's house, to her disgust. She is hostile to them at first and tries to alert Winston by barking, but changes her mind when she discovers they want Oliver, and helps them kidnap him. The gang take Oliver back to the barge, but Oliver is upset as he liked being with Jenny.
8. How does Fagin figure out that Oliver has a rich owner?

Answer: Oliver's collar

Fagin looks at Oliver's swanky new collar, which has Jenny's address - she lives on Fifth Avenue - and figures out that Oliver's owner must be rich, although he thinks that Oliver's owner is a rich man, not a rich little girl. He comes up with a plan to get the money he owes Sykes by holding Oliver to ransom, and sends Jenny the note, ordering her to pay up or she'll never see Oliver again. Sykes sets his dobermans on Fagin and Dodger, but calls them off when Fagin tells him about the plan to ransom Oliver. Jenny goes down to the pier to meet Oliver's kidnapper. On finding out that Oliver's owner is a little girl, Fagin feels guilty about stealing Oliver and gives him back.

Unfortunately, Sykes is also down at the pier and kidnaps Jenny, intending to hold her for ransom. Georgette and the gang team up to get her back.
9. How do the dobermans die?

Answer: Electrocution

Fagin turns up in his shopping cart to rescue Jenny and the gang, and Sykes drives after him. He even chases Fagin down into the subway and onto the train tracks. Sykes tries to grab Jenny back, but Oliver bites him and falls into the car. Roscoe and DeSoto confront him, but Dodger jumps into the car.

He and Roscoe fight on the bonnet of the car, and Roscoe falls squealing onto the tracks and is electrocuted to death. DeSoto comes close to killing Dodger, but Oliver jumps on his face, and he suffers the same fate as Roscoe. Sykes grabs Jenny's leg and she screams for Fagin to help her as a train appears on the tracks. Oliver and Dodger jump on Sykes' head, and Fagin orders Jenny to jump. Fagin's cart narrowly avoids being hit by the train, as Tito manages to steer it onto the edge of the bridge. Sykes is not so lucky.

As he tosses Oliver away, the train smashes into his car and kills him. Luckily, Oliver and Dodger escape in time, and Dodger brings Oliver to Jenny.
10. Does Oliver stay with his new owner at the end of the film?

Answer: Yes

Fagin and the dogs join Jenny at her birthday party, and Georgette - who has fallen in love with Tito - gives him a bath and dresses him up, much to his disgust. Oliver stays behind with Jenny, but Dodger tells him there will always be a place for him in the gang.
