Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Batman series of movies has had many different actors portraying the caped crusader. Which of the the following actors could have easily sung a line or two from "Only Forever" in his movie "Batman Forever"?

Answer: Val Kilmer

As a singer who was also an actor, Bing Crosby serenaded viewers in most of his movies. Interestingly enough, Val Kilmer, who starred as Batman/Bruce Wayne in "Batman Forever" in 1995, is an actor who also sings. Beginning with his appearance as Jim Morrison in "The Doors" in 1991, Kilmer started to sing and perform his music more seriously.

He issued a bootleg CD with original compositions on it in 2008 entitled "Val Kilmer: Sessions with Mick", and he has continued to write songs to promote causes that are near and dear to his heart since that time.

The other actors mentioned all played Batman at some time during their careers, but only Kilmer was in "Batman Forever".
2. Which of the following actors was the star of the seventh official James Bond film, "Diamonds Are Forever", which came out in 1971?

Answer: Sean Connery

Sean Connery was indeed the star of "Diamonds Are Forever", for which he returned to the series after George Lazenby made his one and only foray as 007, in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". Some people don't know that Sean Connery has sung in films before, but all you have to do is check out a copy of "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" to see how he does as a crooner. If they'd included "Only Forever" in "Diamonds Are Forever", Sean could have handled the scene handily!
3. A surprisingly affecting and true-to-life romantic movie starring Rachel Bilson and Tom Sturridge came out in 2010, and if the stars had been singers, "Only Forever" would have fit in just fine. Also starring were Blythe Danner and Richard Jenkins, who give added appeal to this tale. What is the title of this underrated movie?

Answer: Waiting for Forever

"Waitiing for Forever" is the title I was looking for, and the other listings are all made up. Although Rachel Bilson dabbled in singing in some viral videos as the character she played on "Hart of Dixie", she doesn't consider herself a singer and doesn't record songs commercially. Tom Sturridge is even less of a singer than Bilson, so if "Only Forever" were to have been featured in their romantic film, it would have had to be the Bing Crosby version. The following lines are particularly appropriate for this movie:

"How long would it take me
To be near if you beckoned?
Off hand I would figure
Less than a second."
4. What Otto Preminger film, directed in 1947 and starring Linda Darnell and Cornell Wilde, is about a beautiful free spirit of a girl and her adventures in the period of the British Civil War in 1644 and the reinstating of the monarchy in 1660? The movie title comes from the girl's name, which in turn comes from the color of her eyes: "Forever _____________".

Answer: Amber

"Forever Amber" involved a much-publicized search for a leading actress, and Linda Darnell was awarded the part only after the original actress, Peggy Cummins, was replaced due to her inexperience. The film was nominated for an Oscar for best musical scoring of a dramatic or comedy picture, but it lost to "A Double Life".

All of the music in "Forever Amber" is instrumental, and it is available on CD. "Only Forever" would have been a nice addition to the movie score, in my opinion, but it was not part of this movie.
5. The life of John Phillip Sousa was the subject of another popular film of its day with "Forever" in the title. It starred Clifton Webb and Ruth Hussey, and was full of Sousa's marching music. What is the title of this film?

Answer: Stars and Stripes Forever

"Stars and Stripes Forever" is the title of the Sousa story, whcih was made in 1952 and was directed by Henry Koster. The Bing Crosby song wouldn't have fit very well in this movie, but with all the patriotic marches, it probably wouldn't have needed the ballad anyway.
6. "Forever Marilyn" is not the name of a movie, though it is centered around Marilyn Monroe and one of her most famous poses from one of her most famous movie roles, when her dress blows up around her legs on the subway grating in New York City. "Forever Marilyn" is a 26-foot statue that has been on display in the cities of Chicago and Palm Springs. What movie is the scene it depicts from?

Answer: The Seven Year Itch

The movie is "The Seven-Year Itch", in which Marilyn's character is called simply "The Girl". It co-starred the wonderful comedic actor Tom Ewell, who was trying to resist the temptation posed by his upstairs house-mate, played by Marilyn Monroe (most of that temptation was in his own over-active imagination) when he found himself home alone for an extended summer vacation while his wife and kids were off somewhere else.

The other titles listed are all Marilyn movies, and one she actually made with Bing Crosby ("Let's Make Love"), though she and Bing never appeared on screen together in that one, and Bing did not get to serenade her with "Only Forever".
7. A 2008 movie centering on the sport of rugby has the word "Forever" in its title. An up-and-coming rugby star winds up in a juvenile detention center, where he starts for the Highland Rugby team and eventually finds himself coming up against his own father on the field in the National Championships. What movie is this?

Answer: Forever Strong

"Forever Strong" stars Gary Cole, Sean Astin and Neal McDonough. It presents many aspects of the life of rugby players and includes important cultural aspects as well. Though "Only Forever" is not part of the soundtrack for this movie, there is another song that was first made popular by Bing Crosby on it, "Mele Kalikimaka" (a Hawaiian Holiday Song).
8. A 1943 movie with "Forever" in the title boasts a cast of almost every British actor of the day and tells the story of a home that is for sale during WWII, tracing its roots from the Napoleonic era through the bombings during the second world war. What movie is it?

Answer: Forever and a Day

"Forever and a Day" is the only real movie title of the options given. The all star cast included Merle Oberon, Gladys Cooper, C. Aubrey Smith, Claude Rains, Anna Neagle and Ray Milland, among a host of others. Though "Only Forever" is not part of the soundtrack to this movie, it would have fit in easily. The following lyrics are especially apt:

"Do I want to be with you
As the years come and go?
Only forever
If you care to know."
9. Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz play a rather unconventional couple in an animated series of films. The fourth movie in the series was called "Shrek Forever After". True or false?

Answer: True

This installment of the series is a take on "It's a Wonderful Life" where Shrek sees the consequences of his life never having existed. My own preference is for the Jimmy Stewart story, but the Shrek franchise does have its followers. The song "Only Forever" is not part of this movie, but I could see Shrek singing it to Fiona, if only in my mind's eye.
10. Mel Gibson starred with Jamie Lee Curtis in a fantasy film where he put off growing old for 50 years. At first, it seemed like an expeditious solution to his problem, but instead of a dream come true, it began to be more of a nightmare for Mel's character when he realized that the pain he was trying to avoid had never really come about happened and that he had missed all of that time with his one true love. What is the name of this "Forever" film?

Answer: Forever Young

Though the plot has many holes and could have been resolved in many different ways, "Forever Young" is a sweet film, and Mel Gibson was at his prime in terms of being able to combine an endearing portrayal with infectious mischievousness. Though "Only Forever" was not part of the soundtrack for this one, it could have been. A particularly apt part of the lyrics is as follows:

"Do you think I'll remember
How you look when you smile?
Only forever
That's puttin' it mild."
