Shooting From the Lip Trivia Quiz

Guns and one-liners seem to be staples of action films. However, just like some of these shooters are poor shots, not all of these one liners hit the mark.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this 1999 movie Elektra King releases a steamy whisper, "You wouldn't kill me... you'd miss me." Our hero puts a bullet in her head exclaiming, "I never miss." Who is this stone cold man?

Answer: James Bond

The movie is "The World is Not Enough" with Pierce Brosnan as the super spy 007. While Robert Carlyle's Victor "Renard" Zokas is busy installing plutonium into a submarine's reactor to destroy the city of Istanbul, James Bond is being slowly tortured to death by Elektra (Sophie Marceau). Bond escapes the trap and pursues Elektra up a tower. Elektra rushes to the bedroom and stops just short of a lavish mattress where she delivers her sultry "come-on". First impressions were that the mattress would tug at Bond's weakness for the flesh, but this Bond is made of sterner stuff.

Picture: A knot is another word for bond.
2. Two LAPD detectives stalk a gang of South African drug runners who hide behind diplomatic immunity. The climatic shootout takes place on board a cargo ship and, while his partner (Martin Riggs) lies seriously wounded, who is the officer who shoots the bad guys and then informs his partner, "They've been de-kaffir-nated."?

Answer: Sergeant Roger Murtaugh

"Lethal Weapon 2" was the 1989 follow-up to the highly successful first film, released in 1987. Danny Glover reprised his role as the "I'm too old for this" Roger Murtaugh and Mel Gibson is as manic as ever in the role of Martin Riggs. Most of the action for the quote scene has been set out in the question so it doesn't bear repeating here. As for the closing line by Murtaugh... yes, it is cheesy. Yes, it is politically incorrect because it uses the South African equivalent of the "N" word but we tend to overlook that because it's delivered with such panache by Glover.

Picture: A cup of coffee, whilst there is no direct link to the answer it acts a link/pun to the quote.
3. Which of the following heroes provides the dispatch "How do you like ya ribs?" as he incinerates another bad guy, sending him off to meet his maker?

Answer: Sergeant Jericho "Action" Jackson

Peter Dellaplane (Craig T. Nelson) is looking to take over the auto union and is using a gang to leave a trail of dead union officials in their wake. They set up a trap to kill "Action" Jackson (Carl Weathers) but, with the help of an ally, he turns the tables on them, pulls out a grenade launcher and starts his own barbeque.

"Action Jackson" (1988) was directed by Craig R. Baxley and also starred Sharon Stone and Vanity.

Picture: Shows a Jerry can (Jerry being short for Jericho).
4. In 1986, Lt. Marion "Cobra" Cobretti infiltrates a supermarket hostage situation, replete with dark sunglasses on and a match in his mouth. As he puts the supermarket terrorist away he informs him, "You're the disease... and I'm the cure." Who plays Marion Cobretti?

Answer: Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone's lines are the cinematic equivalent of a Big Mac... served with extra cheese. In this 1986 cult action film "Cobra" he is part of an elite team within the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) called the Zombie Squad. The above appears in the opening scene and it is here that Cobra (Stallone) first hears of a white supremacist group called the New World who will become his antagonists in this film. Back to the supermarket gunmen... Cobra is called in to negotiate with him. First he goads him by calling him a psycho, then he hurls a knife into his stomach and, as Cobra pumps several bullets into him, the criminal shouts, "I'm no psycho, I'm a hero of the New World."

Picture: A fox is seen as sly, which is also one of Stallone's nicknames.
5. Danny Glover is not a name that instantly springs to mind when you're talking action or gun toting films, however, he manages to score a second mention in this quiz when, as Malachi Johnson, he utters the following immortal line in which 1985 film: "I don't want to kill you and you don't want to be dead."?

Answer: Silverado

A bad-dude cattle rancher by the name of McKendrick is forcing other owners off their lands by means fair or foul. Worse for these landowners, McKendrick has the local sheriff, Cobb, played by Brian Dennehy, on his payroll. Mal (Malachi) has been away from home for a number of years and is now making his way back. Along the way he befriends Emmett (Scott Glenn), his brother Jake (Kevin Costner) and Paden (Kevin Kline). Mal arrives home to find that the bad-dude's henchmen are trying to run his father off his land and when this fails, they kill his father. Mal heads out to find Emmett who has found himself in a dire situation against the sheriff's deputies. Mal assists by shooting one of the deputies in the hand before leveling his gun at the other and delivering the above message.

"Silverado" was co-written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan, a man whose writing credits include "Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) and "Star Wars Episode VI: The Return of the Jedi" (1983).

Picture: Nothing overly clever here, with silver coins being a link to "Silverado".
6. Jackie Earle Haley's character has just thrown hot oil into the face of an attacker in the prison cafeteria before yelling out, "None of you understand. I'm not locked up in here with you. You're locked up in here with me!" Who is Haley's character and what is the film?

Answer: Rorschach - "Watchmen" (2009)

The setting is 1985 and the government has cracked down on costumed vigilantes, their days appeared to be numbered. However, for one of the Watchmen his days are done. Edward Blake a.k.a. "The Comedian" (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) has been murdered and Rorschach decides to start his own investigation into the affair. However, a far more diabolical scheme is at play here and, as Rorschach starts to get close to the truth he is set-up and thrown into jail. The problem for Rorschach is that most of the prisoners in the cells around him are in there because of him. They immediately begin to taunt him and issue all manner of threats. That's when the outburst in the cafeteria occurs.

Picture: A sundial was meant to link you to the "watch" in the title.
7. A slight twist. The quote is "Go ahead, make my day". It is delivered by Clint Eastwood's Harry Callahan, but in which film?

Answer: Sudden Impact (1983)

Callahan, at the start of this film, interrupts a robbery and shoots three of the robbers. The fourth takes a waitress hostage and threatens to kill the woman. Undeterred Callahan points his pistol at the villain and utters the immortal line. The thief chickens out and surrenders. Callahan has cause to repeat the phrase at the end of the movie when a rapist threatens Callahan's girlfriend with a shotgun. This time the perpetrator doesn't surrender and he makes Callahan's day.

Picture: If that picture doesn't scream "Sudden Impact"... where's your imagination?
8. "Yippee ki yay" is uttered by Bruce Willis' John McClane in the "Die Hard" franchise. The first to hear it is Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber ("Die Hard" 1988) after he tries to extract the identity of his "mystery guest". He throws three iconic names at McClane. Which is NOT one of those?

Answer: Roy Rogers

It is Willis' John McLane that uses the name Roy Rogers.

Hans Gruber: "Just another American who saw too many movies as a child? Another orphan of a bankrupt culture who thinks he's John Wayne? Rambo? Marshal Dillon?"
John McClane: "Was always kinda partial to Roy Rogers actually. I really like those sequined shirts."

The first of the "Die Hard" films was bold, witty and intelligent... and it made Bruce Willis a bona fide action star. Directed by John McTiernan, it shows a group of terrorists hold a building to ransom as a smoke-screen to cover up a massive robbery. And they would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for John McClane. "Who are you?" enquires Gruber. "Just a fly in the ointment, Hans, the monkey in the wrench."

Picture: A small stretch here. The focus of the picture is the trigger, which is also the name of Roy Rogers' horse.
9. In "Predator" (1987) we are introduced to a sentient humanoid with active camouflage that makes it virtually invisible, advanced weaponry that makes it formidable and dreadlocks (that make it comical). But if you think Arnold Schwarzenegger is afraid of it he dispels those fears with which immortal line?

Answer: "If it bleeds, we can kill it."

An alien who hunts down beings from other races simply to add to its trophy collection is drawn to Earth, specifically the jungles of Val Verde, where Arnold (as "Dutch" Schultz) and his team of United States Army Special Forces are on a mission. The army team is being systematically "taken out" and the predator appears to be invincible. That is until Arnold's team spies some green blood... and Arnie utters one of the best action lines in cinema history.

Those other quotes were also lines by Arnold in the following films:
"It's showtime." - "The Running Man" (1987)
"You killed my father... BIG MISTAKE!" - "The Last Action Hero" (1993)
"Talk to the hand." - "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" (2003)

Picture: This is a "blood" orange.
10. Denzel Washington is a "Man on Fire" in 2004. Which character does he portray that spills the following line, "Forgiveness is between them and God. It's my job to arrange the meeting."?

Answer: John Creasy

Denzel Washington's characters in action films are generally "kings of cool". They are considered men of few words. Though frugal in vocabulary you know they will hit the mark. In this film, Washington plays a depressed former CIA operative (Creasy) whom we see, at the start, trying to take his own life. When the gun mis-fires he sees it as an omen that he still has a purpose on this earth. Accordingly, he takes on the job to protect a nine-year-old girl (Pita, played by Dakota Fanning) from the threat of kidnapping. Pita does get kidnapped and Creasy is seriously wounded in the exchange. In a plot that involves a number of double crosses and corrupt policemen, Creasy makes a vow to destroy everyone involved in Pita's abduction, no matter the cost. In this scene he uses the house of an elderly couple from which to launch an ambush at a group of gang members. The elderly owner of the house informs John that the church says you should forgive. That's when Creasy responds with the eloquent rejoinder in the question.

Denzel Washington was also these characters:
Rubin Carter - "The Hurricane" (1999)
Easy Rawlins - "Devil in a Blue Dress" (1995)
Robert McCall - "The Equalizer" (2014)

Picture: This one draws a longer bow, showing the stumps and the "crease" of a cricket pitch.
