Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Best Picture: "Chicago". Which of these movies was NOT nominated?

Answer: About Schmidt

The missing nominee is the philosophical drama "The Hours". "About Schmidt", a tale about a widower searching for meaning and love in his life by stopping his daughter's wedding, failed to receive a Best Picture nod.
2. Best Director: Roman Polanski, "The Pianist". Which of these movies was NOT nominated?

Answer: Spike Jonze, "Adaptation"

The missing nominee is rookie director Rob Marshall for the razzly-dazzly "Chicago". The paradoxal "Adaptation", a story about a screenwriter writing a story about a writer writing an article about an orchid thief, did not score a Best Director nod.
3. Best Original Screenplay: Pedro Almodovar, "Talk to Her". Which of these movies was NOT nominated?

Answer: Paul Thomas Anderson, "Punch-Drunk Love"

The missing nominee is the creatively quaint and powerfully moving "Far From Heaven", a story written by Todd Haynes about a housewife who develops feelings for a black man in 1950s Connecticut after discovering her husband is gay.
4. Best Adapted Screenplay: Ronald Harwood, "The Pianist". Which of these movies was NOT nominated?

Answer: Alexander Payne, "About Schimdt"

The missing nominee is the crafty "The Hours" by David Hare, as it follows three women, three times, and three stories about their self-actualization. Surprisingly, though, the heart-warmingly simple script of "About Schmidt" wasn't nominated, despite its Golden Globe win in that category.
5. Best Actor: Adrien Brody, "The Pianist". Which of these movies was NOT nominated?

Answer: Leonardo Di Caprio, "Catch Me If You Can"

The missing nominee, and expected winner, was Jack Nicholson for his humble performance in "About Schimdt". Adrien Brody became the youngest person to win in this category, for his portrayal of a Holocaust survivor who keeps himself going with his music.
6. Best Actress: Nicole Kidman, "The Hours". Which of these movies was NOT nominated?

Answer: Maggie Gyllenhaal, "Secretary"

The missing nominee was Julianne Moore for "Far From Heaven" for her flawless performance as the perfect, yet unhappy, housewife. Maggie Gyllenhaal did not manage to get nominated, despite the fact that she played a nutjob trying to pass off as a legal secretary in this clever comedy.
7. Best Supporting Actor: Chris Cooper, "Adaptation". Which of these movies was NOT nominated?

Answer: Dennis Quaid, "Far From Heaven"

The missing nominee is Ed Harris for "The Hours" for his role as a gay writer dying of AIDS. This is Harris' fourth strike at the Oscars, and I don't think it will be his last.
8. Best Supporting Actress: Catherine Zeta-Jones, "Chicago". Which of these was NOT nominated?

Answer: Cameron Diaz, "Gangs of New York"

The missing nominee is Kathy Bates for her role as a quirky in-law in "About Schimdt".
9. Best Original Song: Eminem, "8 Mile" ("Lose Yourself"). Which of these movies was NOT nominated?

Answer: Hans Zimmer, "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" ("Here I Am")

The missing nominee is U2 for their patriotic song in "Gangs of New York" about "The Hands That Built America". Eminem, surprisingly, yet still deservedly, won for his song about a young man from the hood struggling to make it in an underworld.
10. Best Original Score: Elliot Goldenthal, "Frida". Which of these movies was NOT nominated?

Answer: Peter Gabriel, "Rabbit-Proof Fence"

The missing nominee is Phillip Glass for his provocative score in "The Hours". "Frida", apparently, showed a stronger score for the story about a painter who suffers abuse and helps herself through the gift of art.
