Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bergen

Answer: Golden Owl

This award is one of those that doesn't fit the normal pattern. The main prize at the Bergen International Film Festival is not the golden one, it is simply titled "Cinema Extraordinaire".
The "Golden Owl" award is separate and not open to all films. It is restricted to science documentaries and the winner is determined by the University of Bergen.
First awarded in 2014 winners include the French film "How I Came to Hate Math", which I also hate, I prefer "maths", but that is a UK English vs American English issue. American winners include the films "Monster in the Mind" and "The Serengeti Rules".
2. Brussels

Answer: Golden Raven

There are several film festivals held in Brussels, the Golden Raven is awarded at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival. The festival's website describes it as a "temple of fantasy, horror, science-fiction, thriller and surrealism".
Winners in the first quarter of the twenty-first century include the Spanish film "Las brujas de Zugarramurdi", which translates to "The Witches of Zugarramurdi", although it was released with the English title "Witching & Bitching". Another winner was the Australian zombie movie "Little Monsters".
3. Istanbul

Answer: Golden Tulip

There are two Golden Tulips awarded at the Istanbul film festival. They are for the best film in the national and international competitions. First awarded in 1985, winning films in the international section include the Serbian "A Film with No Name", the South Korean "House of Hummingbird" and the Taiwanese film "Goodbye, Dragon Inn".
The first of these is a film about making a film in a difficult political climate, while the last is about the closing night of a cinema in a Chinese town.
4. Luxor

Answer: Golden Mask of Tutankhamen

Each year the Luxor African Film Festival awards films which are made in Africa, made by Africans and about African subjects. Two of the categories are the Nile Grand Prizes for full length feature and documentary films. The winners of both of these are awarded a "Golden Mask of Tutankhamun". Other prizes include the silver and bronze masks.
The 2019 Golden Mask winner for best feature film was the Ghanaian film "The Burial of Kojo", which is about a man trapped underground while his daughter tries to save him via the magic of the dream realm.
5. Moscow

Answer: Golden St. George

The dragon slayer Saint George appears on the Moscow coat of Arms, which accounts for the choice of award. That well known source of possibly accurate information, Wikipedia, claims that the Moscow film festival awarded a Golden St. George from 1989-2003 and a Golden George thereafter. The International Movie Database shows recent awards called Golden St. Georges. The Moscow Film Festival website refers to them as "Golden Georges" on the home page. The website then goes on to describe the trophies as gold and silver St. Georges so the terms seem interchangeable. If the festival's own website is ambiguous, I doubt anyone else can be certain which is correct.
The main award of the Golden George or St. George is awarded for the best film. The Moscow film festival has awarded this at bi-annual festivals from 1989 and then annually from the year 2000. Winners of this award include the Polish film "Life as a Fatal Sexually Transmitted Disease" and the Soviet film "Spotted Dog Running at the Edge of the Sea" (it was still the USSR at the time of the film's release). I suspect and hope that these have lost something in the translation.
The Silver St. Georges (or possibly Silver Georges) are awarded for the individual awards of best actor, actress and director.
6. Nantes

Answer: Golden Montgolfier

Each year Nantes in France hosts the "Festival of the Three Continents". This is for films from Latin America, Asia and Africa. The top prize awarded is the Golden Montgolfier for the best film, a representation of the Montgolfier brothers' balloon. Why this should be I cannot tell, there appears to be no connection between the city of Nantes and the Montgolfier brothers. Regardless, winners of the best film Golden Montgolfier include the Kazakhstani film "My Brother Silk Road", about an artist thrown off a train, the Iranian film "A Few Kilos of Dates for a Funeral", which centres on two employees of a petrol station, and the Chinese film "Taming the Horse" where a young boy from the remote plains comes to terms with the bustle of the city.
7. Shanghai

Answer: Golden Goblet

The Golden Goblets are awarded at the Shanghai International Film Festival, which is held annually. There are various categories in which the Golden Goblet can be won including the best feature film, best actor/actress and best screenplay. The goblet sounds uninspiring but the festival's website would beg to differ, it describes the award as "a symbol of the traditional orient culture, is an ancient Chinese wine container which has a uniquely beautiful shape and a gracefully antique style". Pictures show it as something a bit more elaborate than a simple drinking vessel. European winners of the Golden Goblet for best film include the Italian film "Kiss Me Again" and the Greek film "Little England", which despite its title is nothing to do with the UK.
8. Tallinn

Answer: Golden Wolf

Estonia hosts several film festivals, but the "Golden Wolf" is awarded at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. The best film receives the Golden Wolf, whilst the best director, actor and actress awards are merely described as "wolves".
Investigation shows that these are silhouettes of wolves against a lighter background within a scroll of metal, not actual canines. A shame in some ways as it would make for a truly original prize giving ceremony, one with real bite.
Twenty-first century winners of the award for best film include the Columbian film "Wandering Girl" and the South Korean film "The Throne". The latter film centres on a Korean king and his family, including the son who intended to assassinate his father and is in turn killed by him.
9. Thessaloniki

Answer: Golden Alexander

The Thessaloniki film festival started in 1960 but only became an international festival in 1992. Since then, the top prize has been the "Golden Alexander", this is probably connected to Alexander the Great. The city of Thessaloniki is named after his half-sister and the city also has a prominent statue of him.
Winners of the award include the Hungarian film "Kills on Wheels", centred on a wheelchair bound hitman, and the Swedish film "Ravens", which focuses on the different aspirations of a farmer and his daughter. The latter film also won a Golden Prometheus in Tbilisi.
10. Zanzibar

Answer: Golden Dhow

The Zanzibar International Film Festival (or ZIFF) awards Golden and Silver Dhows annually. The dhow is an Arabic sailing ship and the awards are shaped accordingly. This may seem strange as Zanzibar is in Africa but there is a strong link with the Arab world, in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Zanzibar was part of the Sultanate of Oman. The festival has been held since 1997 and the award of a Golden Dhow is for film judged best feature film. Winners in the twenty-first century include "Half a Golden Sun" which is set in Nigerian Civil war and the South African film "Call Me Thief" where a small-time criminal impresses the hardened criminals in jail by telling stories.
