Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cindy Williams, Ron Howard and Suzanne Somers. There's only one movie all of these could have been in:

Answer: American Graffiti

None of these actors were in a lot of movies, confining their work mostly to TV, directing, and Thighmaster commercials. "Graffiti" still holds up as a classic today. It was made in 1973, but its tagline is "Where Were You in '62?" I was graduating from college. How 'bout you? The sequel was "More American Graffiti" (1979), which the IMDb says is also called "Purple Haze," but that's news to me! They got most of the original cast back together for this one, including Harrison Ford, playing the same character (Bob Falfa), but now, instead of a reckless, cocky hotrodder, he's a cop! Delroy Lindo also appeared, but who the heck knew who he was then?
2. You're the only one left in the theater and you're watching the credits. You see the names Kevin Costner, Kevin Bacon, and Gary Oldman. What movie is it?

Answer: JFK

Oliver Stone's "JFK" was a look at the assassination that made the Warren "Report" look both stupid and criminal, not a hard thing to do if you make a little effort. We try to learn what really happened, but "they" will never let us know the full truth, even though some of the major participants in the cover-up, like Gerald Ford and Arlen Specter, are still alive. Costner played Jim Garrison, Oldman played Oswald, one of history's most mysterious figures, and Bacon played Willie Keith, a convict with some interesting info about the assassination.

A brilliant performance by Bacon if only for a few minutes. What a scene stealer!
3. Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, and Patrick Swayze were actually all in the same movie. Which one was it?

Answer: The Outsiders

Although Francis Ford Coppola directed this flick, it was no "Godfather" or "Apocalypse Now." Its main hook today is the opportunity to see all these actors when they were young. The cast also included Matt Dillon, Ralph (not yet the Karate Kid) Macchio, Emilio Estevez, Diane Lane, and, of all people, Tom Waits.

The film was based on the novel by S.E. Hinton, who is female, by the way. She also had a small part as a nurse.
4. In what movie did Cameron Diaz appear with Chris Elliot and Brett Favre?

Answer: There's Something About Mary

Ben Stiller really had the starring role. Cameron was at her most fetching in this crazy flick, especially in the scene where Stiller goes to her house to pick her up for the prom, and she walks down the stairs and . . . be still, my heart!
5. You won't often see the combination of John Cusack, Tim Robbins, and Jack Black, but they were in one movie together. Which one?

Answer: High Fidelity

"Fidelity" was about a man (Cusack) whose whole life revolves around vinyl. His collection of LP's covers all the walls of his apartment, and he owns a vintage record shop. Jack Black became a popular actor in the first years of the 21st century. Would someone please tell me why?
6. Henry Winkler, Rob Schneider, and Kathy Bates were in a movie about sports. Which one?

Answer: The Waterboy

Adam Sandler played the title role in this movie that had some good laughs, but, when you get right down to it, it was still just an Adam Sandler movie.
7. Speaking of Adam Sandler, he was also matched up in a movie with Drew Barrymore and Jon Lovitz. This one's pretty easy, so we'll make it a fill-in:

Answer: The Wedding Singer

Pretty decent for one of Adam's movies, although he was very funny on "SNL." Tagline: "He's going to party like it's 1985." To me, the funniest part of the movie is seeing people trying to dress like Madonna and Michael Jackson. The movie does have its good points, like if Julia marries Glenn, her name will be Julia Gulia.
8. Somehow I'm coming up with yet another Adam Sandler movie, although he wasn't really the star of this one. He appeared with Brendan Fraser and Steve Buscemi. And the movie was?

Answer: Airheads

"Airheads" is about these guys in a garage band who want to make it big so badly they hold a radio station and its DJ's hostage and force them to play the band's music. Yes, it's that bad out there in the music biz! Cast includes Joe Mantegna, Michael McKean, and Michael Richards.
9. What action movie combined Nicolas Cage, John Malkovich, and John Cusack?

Answer: Con Air

They put quite a cast together for this movie, including Steve Buscemi, Ving Rhames, Mykelti Williamson, and Dave Chapelle. Malkovich had one of my favorite character names: Cyrus "The Virus" Grissom. At one point, the plane is towing a car through the air at the end of a cable, and Cage looks at it and says, "Now, on most days, that would seem strange." Great stuff!
10. More odd casting: Gene Wilder, Jack Albertson, and Roy Kinnear in . . .

Answer: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

This one-of-a-kind movie was based on Roald Dahl's novel "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." Albertson played Charlie Bucket's Grandpa Joe, and Kinnear was Henry Salt, who spoiled his daughter Veruca to the point where he was scrambling to meet her demands every second of the day. "Don't care how! I want it now!" Well, she got hers and nobody seemed to mind too much.
