Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our first song actually reached the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 list for six weeks in 2015. What is the name of the song from OMI that has tropical undertones featuring a trumpet, conga drum, and piano and includes the line "She is always right there when I need her"?

Answer: Cheerleader

OMI is the stage name of Omar Samuel Pasley who was born in Jamaica in 1986. In addition to reaching number one in the United States, "Cheerleader" by OMI also achieved the top ranking in twenty other countries. Although the song was released in 2015, OMI began developing the song as far back as 2008 when he first created the musical melody underlying the song.
2. Our next 2015 song has the rather commanding title of "Shut Up and Dance". Reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100, which band that features Nicholas Petricca as its lead singer, released the song "Shut Up and Dance"?

Answer: Walk the Moon

"Shut Up and Dance" was the first single off of Walk the Moon's "Talking Is Hard" album that was released in 2014. In spite of the song's title, the lyrics are actually very catchy and moving. I interpret the song to mean to let go of fear and doubt and just let the fun times take over.
3. One of my favorite songs of 2015 was from the Australian artist Sia. What is the name of her song that peaked in 2015 at number twenty on the Billboard Hot 100 and includes the line "I'm gonna fly like a bird through the night, feel my tears as they dry"?

Answer: Chandelier

The next line from "Chandelier" after the one in the question is "I'm gonna swing from the chandelier, from the chandelier". The song is sung powerfully and it has a powerful message about the effects of alcoholism and the party lifestyle. Although it peaked at number twenty in 2015, the song's highest chart spot came in 2014 when it reached number eight. "Chandelier" was the first single released from Sia off of the "1000 Forms of Fear" album.
4. One artist had a breakout year in 2015 with two of his songs, "The Hills", and "Can't Feel My Face", reaching the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100. What is the stage name of this Canadian artist who was born with the name Abêl Makkonen Tesfaye in 1990?

Answer: The Weeknd

In total The Weeknd's songs occupied the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for nine weeks during 2015. In 2015 The Weeknd also became the first person to occupy the top three spots on the Billboard Hot R&B chart when his songs "Can't Feel My Face", "The Hills", and "Earned It" filled those positions. Tesfaye's stage name The Weeknd came about after he dropped out of high school at the age of 17.

Interestingly, a Canadian band that formed in 1998 had the name "The Weekend" so when Tesfaye adopted his stage name he dropped the final 'e' in the word.
5. Another individual that had a stellar year in 2015 was Meghan Trainor. She had several solo songs in the top 20 yet she also had a duet that reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100. With whom did she sing "Like I'm Gonna Lose You", a song about cherishing the moments with the ones you love?

Answer: John Legend

In addition to "Like I'm Gonna Lose You", Trainor also had "All About That Bass" at number five, "Dear Future Husband" at number fourteen, and "Lips Are Movin" at number four in 2015. "Like I'm Gonna Lose You" came off of Trainor's "Title" album which debuted at number one and sold more than one million copies in 2015.
6. Our next song peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2015. Featuring Adam Levine on vocals, which song includes the line "I'm hurting, baby, I'm broken down I need your loving, loving I need it now"?

Answer: Sugar

Impressively, "Sugar" was the eighth straight single from Maroon 5 that made it into the Billboard Top 10. Paying homage to the 2005 movie "Wedding Crashers", the music video for "Sugar" shows the band crashing weddings in the city of Los Angeles.
7. Rachel Platten was the performer behind our next song which peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100. Which song did she say was inspired by her dedication to succeed in the music industry in spite of setbacks and that she hoped would motivate people to overcome their obstacles?

Answer: Fight Song

In addition to its success as a single, "Fight Song" also featured in the television shows "Revenge", "Pretty Little Liars", and "Supergirl". Although she has been active since 2003, Platten did not have a song reach the Billboard Hot 100 top 40 until 2015 when both "Stand By You" at number thirty-seven and "Fight Song" at number six broke that barrier.
8. Possibly the biggest song of 2015 was released by Adele in October and it was her first single since 2012. What is the name of this number one Billboard Hot 100 hit that was the first song in the United States to sell more than one million digital copies in the first week of its release and which featured the line "There's such a difference between us and a million miles"?

Answer: Hello

"Hello" was a smash hit as it reached number one on the charts in more than 30 countries. The song features Adele's iconic voice as well as piano and soul inspired themes. The song "Hello" came off of Adele's album "25" which is titled after the age she was in 2013 when she wrote many of the songs for the album.
9. At least for me, the song "Watch Me" makes me want to get up and dance. In fact, the song actually has a special dance with two moves called the 'Whip' and 'Nae Nae'. Which artist's first single was "Watch Me" which reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2015?

Answer: Silentó

Silentó is the stage name of Richard Lamar Hawk who released "Watch Me" when he was just 17 years old. The music video for "Watch Me" features the artist dancing in a high school gymnasium with fellow classmates. The music video went viral quickly after its release on Silentó's YouTube channel.
10. The Irish musician Hozier cracked the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time with a song that peaked at the number two position in 2015. What is the name of the song that Hozier wrote in frustration with religious institutions' intolerance of homosexuality?

Answer: Take Me to Church

Hozier's song took direct aim at the Catholic Church's positions on homosexuality and the music video for "Take Me to Church" depicts two men in a relationship and the homophobic treatment that they receive. In addition to its high position on the charts, "Take Me to Church" was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Song of the Year.
