Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'A series of shocks, sneakers fall apart. Earth keeps on rolling - witnesses falling.'

Answer: David Bowie

From the seminal album 'Scary Monsters', the lyric came from track number 2, 'Up The Hill Backwards.' In 1980, the year of the album's release, Bowie was outdressing Adam and the Ants and the New Romantics ... as a clown!
2. 'I take my aim and I fake my words, I'm just you long time curse.'

Answer: The Jesus and Mary Chain

Famed for their sub-15 minute sets at the start of their career, the 15 minutes on stage consisted of not much more than feedback. The Jesus and Mary Chain released the top selling 'Darklands' album in 1985. The lyric is from the track 'April Skies', performed on Top of the Pops by William and Jim themselves. I wonder if they were charged for that wrecked mic stand?
3. 'Mother, I'm running out of change, but I had to phone to let you know.'

Answer: Spear of Destiny

The highest charting single for Spear, released in 1986 from the 'Outland' album, was the track 'Never Take Me Alive.' The track was performed as part of the 'Dead Men Walking' set featuring Kirk Brandon (Spear), Pete Wylie (Mighty Wah!), Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols), and Mike Peters (The Alarm).
4. 'Yesterday, she blew my mind. Having trouble with my direction.'

Answer: The Cult

The album 'Electric' represented a total change in musical direction for The Cult, taking a more rock 'n' roll stance than the previous 'Love' album. The lyric is from 'Love Removal Machine' banned by the BBC in 1986, bless! The track existed in several forms, including an example produced by The Clash's producer Bill Price. Hands up all those who have ever danced to 'She Sells Sanctuary'? Shame on those with their hands down!
5. 'You think it's so easy, but listen, oh, they once said the same to me.'

Answer: Everything But The Girl

Ben Watt and ex-'Marine Girl' Tracey Thorn existed as 'Everything But The Girl' long before 'Missing.' The track from which the lyrics are taken, 'Don't Leave Me Behind', came from the orchestral album 'Baby, The Stars Shine Bright.' 1986- believe it, believe it not.
6. 'Here we are stranded, somehow it seems the same, beware...'

Answer: Japan

Makeup, poses, floppy hairdos, and silly clothes...enough about me, Japan were at the forefront of the new romantic revolution in the early 80s despite having been formed in 1974. The lyrics are taken from the title track of the 1981 album 'Quiet Life.' I wish I could award extra points for anyone knowing that David Sylvian and Steve Jansen are brothers!
7. 'What can I say, I don't wanna play any more. What can I say I'm heading for the door.'

Answer: Depeche Mode

This track, 'Leave in Silence', reached number 18 for Depeche Mode. Which is average. Paul Weller said in 'Melody Maker' "I've heard more melody coming from Kenny Wheeler's backside." Conversely, Daniella Soave said in 'Record Mirror' "A tower of glory.

This pounds with atmosphere, creating a soundtrack for a film which is created in your mind's eye." Eh? You work it out! The year was 1982.
8. 'On days like this and times like these, I feel an animal deep inside.'

Answer: The Sisters of Mercy

'This Corrosion' was the first track released by Andrew Eldritch and Patricia Van Morrisson under the title 'The Sisters of Mercy' since the split of the original 'Sisters' line up featuring Wayne Hussey. A struggle for the name ensued seeing Eldritch release material under the name 'The Sisterhood' while the debate raged. Eldritch eventually retained title and Hussey went on to enjoy success with 'The Mission.' The year was 1987.
9. 'You, you're just a really bad person who won't, you won't listen to anyone.'

Answer: Public Image Limited

Seven tracks on the album, wonder why it was called '9'? The irrepressible John Lydon continues to impress with his 1989 offering 'Disappointed.'
10. 'And ring that bell as loud as you please, it can only make me well, there's only one way to bring a new day.'

Answer: Ultra Vivid Scene

'Mercy Seat' was the only chart success for this American band consisting of Kurt Ralske and ... well, erm ... Kurt Ralske really! The album 'Ultra Vivid Scene' was released in 1988.
