Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The four members of the band are from which British city?

Answer: Sheffield

They all lived in a village in Sheffield called High Green...
2. What was the title of the band's number one, Mercury Prize winning, debut album?

Answer: Whatever people say I am, that's what I'm not

"Beneath the Boardwalk" was the EP that essentially resulted in them being signed by a label. "Humbug" was the band's third album, released in the Autumn of 2009. "Favourite Worst Nightmare" was their highly anticipated second album, which also spent 3 weeks at number one of the UK charts.
3. How many of the band's first three albums have reached number one in the UK charts?

Answer: Three

All three of the band's first albums entered the charts at number one. Their debut album, "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not", spent four weeks at number one, selling over 365,000 copies in its first week. The second album, "Favourite Worst Nightmare" sold over 270,000 copies in its first week, spending another four weeks at the top.

Their third, most experimental album, "Humbug", was the band's worst selling album, selling almost 100,000 copies in it's first week. However, it spent two weeks at the top of the charts, and outsold the rest of the top five combined.
4. Which of the following singles reached number one in the UK charts?

Answer: When The Sun Goes Down

"Mardy Bum" was the single that never was, so to speak, the band saying they "didn't want 'this' song to go commercial". "Brianstorm", the 2007 hit single, was set to go straight to the top of the charts, but debuted at #2, beaten to the top by Sugababes.

As for "Cornerstone", this was the bands worst chart outing, lasting just a week in the top 100, starting at a disappointing number 92...
5. Lead singer Alex Turner formed a side project band called "The Last Shadow Puppets". But which friend and band frontman did he join forces with?

Answer: Miles Kane

Miles Kane is the lead singer of scouse band "The Rascals", and they decided to record material in August 2007, releasing the album "The Age Of The Understatement" in April 2008, and it went straight to number one, making it Alex Turner's third straight number one album. It was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Prize and won the breakthrough award at the 2008 MOJO Awards.
6. What is the name of the band's drummer, who was praised by rapper Kanye West in 2006, for having a "British style"?

Answer: Matt Helders

Matt said he was "dead chuffed" by this comment from the USA rapper!
7. In which year did Arctic Monkeys first play the main stage at the Reading and Leeds UK music festival?

Answer: 2006

The band played the festival in 2006 and again (headlining) in 2009 - both times receiving negative reviews. For their set in 2006, it was quoted that the band "didn't perform like the rock-stars they've claimed the right to be". In 2009, frontman Alex Turner's abilities came into question, as his performance was quoted as seeming "lazy" and "ineffective".
8. Which American rock star produced the vast majority of the band's third studio album, "Humbug"?

Answer: Josh Homme

After doing a few USA gigs with Josh's band "Queens Of The Stone Age", the band decided to hire him as the executive producer for seven of the album's ten tracks, at the legendary "Joshua Tree" studio.
9. Why was their first album, "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not", highly criticised?

Answer: The CD cover "glorified" the use of cigarettes

The front cover showed a drunken man smoking a cigarette, and the CD cover was a pile of cigarette stubs. The band manager humourously responded to the critic by saying, "Well, smoking cigarettes doesn't look like it's doing the man the world of good"
10. What was the first single of the band's third album "Humbug"?

Answer: Crying Lightning

The release of "Crying Lightning" marked the most highly anticipated comeback of 2009, and despite only releasing the single through downloads and vinyl, the single still entered the charts at number twelve.
