Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Wrinkly old rockers Muddy Waters tribute band "Paint It, Black" Got it?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones formed in 1962. They were one of the most successful and influential bands in the world for decades, with songs such as "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "Gimme Shelter".

The Stones were in turn influenced by the likes of Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry. They made clear their enormous debt to Muddy Waters in particular by naming themselves after his 1950 song "Rollin' Stone". Other recordings in his catalogue include "Hoochie Coochie Man" and "I Just Want to Make Love to You".
2. Copperfield villain "Demons and Wizards". Prog Rock! Which "'umble" rockers?

Answer: Uriah Heep

Uriah Heep formed in London in 1969. They named themselves after the fawning villain who made frequent reference to how "'umble" he was from the 1849 novel "David Copperfield" by Charles Dickens. They called their 1970 debut album "..Very 'Eavy ...Very 'Umble".

The band membership changed frequently, with the only common factor being guitarist Mick Box, who played in Uriah Heep for over 40 years on more than 20 studio albums along with more than 20 other band members.
3. Swedish pop royals Palindromic acronym "Mamma Mia", who?

Answer: ABBA

Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad released a single in 1972, called "People Need Love" under the not so catchy name of "Björn & Benny, Agnetha & Anni-Frid". They soon switched to ABBA, using the first letter of each of their first names.

They came to international prominence when they won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with "Waterloo", and went on to have enormous success worldwide.
4. New-wave post-punk pop Hairstyle? Or Boeing jet? Both? "Love Shack". Does this help?

Answer: The B-52's

The B-52's formed in Georgia in 1976. Their singles included "Rock Lobster","Roam" and "Planet Claire". The band took their name from a type of beehive hairstyle called a "B-52" because of its resemblance to the nose of the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress.
5. Burroughs' "Naked Lunch" "Showbiz Kids" and "Deacon Blue" What's Fagen's band's name?

Answer: Steely Dan

Steely Dan took its name from a device in the groundbreaking novel from 1959, "Naked Lunch" by William Burroughs. The novel was originally published in France due to US obscenity laws.

The nucleus of Steely Dan was Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, and they formed the band in 1972. Their albums include "Katy Lied" and "Aja". They broke up in 1981 and reformed successfully in 1993.
6. "Relax"! They're scousers Sinatra headline named them Who did the Beeb ban?

Answer: Frankie Goes to Hollywood

Frankie Goes to Hollywood formed in Liverpool in 1980. Their debut single, "Relax", was doing well in the UK charts, but got a terrific publicity boost from the fuss when BBC Radio 1 DJ Mike Read took exception to the lyrics and record sleeve, and the subsequent banning from the airwaves. It went to number one, as did their next two singles, making them the first group to top the UK charts with their first three singles since fellow scousers Gerry and the Pacemakers. The group won an Ivor Novello award for their second single, "Two Tribes".

The band's unusual name was said to come from a headline in the magazine "The New Yorker" about Frank Sinatra.
7. Barbarella-ish New Romantic Brummie band Who did sing "Rio"?

Answer: Duran Duran

Duran Duran formed in Birmingham in 1978. Their name came from performing at Barbarella's night club. The club was named after the 1968 sci-fi movie starring Jane Fonda. One of the characters was called Doctor Durand Durand, and the band (sort of) used the name.

They went through a few lineups before stabilising in 1980, and they hit the UK charts in 1981 with "Planet Earth". They went on to be part of the 1980s "UK invasion", achieving Billboard Number Ones with "The Reflex" and "A View to a Kill".
8. Florida - "Free Bird" Gym teacher called L. Skinner What was Van Zant's band?

Answer: Lynyrd Skynyrd

Lynyrd Skynyrd was formed in 1969. They were particularly known for the songs "Free Bird" and "Sweet Home Alabama" (despite coming from Jacksonville, Florida). The name was a nod to a strict teacher, Leonard Skinner, and it took a while for the band to decide on the weird spelling. The band was hit by a tragedy in 1977 when a plane crash killed leader Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines.
9. Cool Sheffield trip-hop "A Clockwork Orange" milk drink "Sing It Back" Sung by?

Answer: Moloko

Róisín Murphy and Mark Brydon formed Moloko in Sheffield in 1994. They took the name from a druggy milk cocktail called the Moloko Plus from Anthony Burgess's 1962 novel "A Clockwork Orange".

The pair liked funny names - their first album, "Do You Like My Tight Sweater?" came from a successful chat-up line from Murphy to Brydon. Their singles included "Fun For Me", "Familiar Feeling" and "The Time is Now". They split up personally and professionally in 2003.
10. Aldous Huxley nerds "Light My Fire", sang Lizard King Jim was in which band?

Answer: The Doors

Jim Morrison suggested the band use the name "The Doors" from one of Aldous Huxley's less well-known books, "The Doors of Perception" (1954). Huxley's title was in turn lifted from William Blake's 1908 poem "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell": "If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite."

With fellow band members Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger and John Densmore, Morrison, one of the most original and distinctive performers in rock music, released six studio albums including "The Soft Parade" and "L.A. Woman" before he died in Paris in 1971.
