Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Siblings are often noted for the natural harmonies in their singing. Which of the following bands did NOT include three brothers when formed?

Answer: Bellowhead

Starting with the ones that did include trios of brothers, Equation included the Lakeman brothers, Sean, Sam and Seth. The shanty-singing Fisherman's Friends originally included John, Julian and Jeremy Brown. Merry Hell is a folk-rock band which includes the Kettle brothers, John, Bob and Andrew. All three Kettle brothers were previously in a band called Tansad.
There were no siblings among the thirteen different members of Bellowhead from the bands formation in 2004 until they disbanded in 2016.
2. Which singer-songwriter, whose albums include "Life in a Paper Boat" and "Awkward Annie", is known as the Barnsley Nightingale?

Answer: Kate Rusby

The singer with the nickname and those albums is Kate Rusby. Other albums she has released include "Philosophers, Poets & Kings" and "The Girl Who Couldn't Fly". Kathryn Roberts, who also comes from Barnsley, formed the band Equation along with Kate Rusby and the three Lakeman brothers. Kate left Equation and was replaced by Cara Dillon.
Sandy Denny was from London and died in 1978 having sung with both Fairport Convention and Fotheringay.
3. Which folk group, active since the 1960's released an album in 2013 inspired by a Terry Pratchett book?

Answer: Steeleye Span (Wintersmith)

All of these groups are (or were) real folk-rock or rock groups in the UK. Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention, both originally formed in London were still playing into the twenty-first century. Jack the Lad and Hedgehog Pie were from Northumberland, forming and disbanding in the 1970s. The former group, which formed from a split in the band Lindisfarne, reformed towards the end of the twentieth century.
All of the titles are books by Terry Pratchett but the only one that is also an album is Steeleye Span's Wintersmith.
4. There are (or were) a lot of folk festivals around the UK in the first two decades of the twenty-first century. In most cases these are held over a weekend. But some are advertised as being a whole week. Which of the following was NOT a week-long festival in the twenty-first century before Covid-19 shut them all down?

Answer: Cambridge

Cambridge Folk Festival is still a long weekend but the other three venues have been folk weeks for several years.
According to the festival's own website, Broadstairs, on the Kent coast, has been hosting a week-long festival since 1965. Sidmouth is in Devon, the website for this festival tells me that it has been a festival week for even longer, since 1955.
Whitby, on the North Yorkshire coast has had a folk festival since 1965, becoming a week-long festival in 1981.
5. At the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2012 the winner of the "folk singer of year", also won three further awards jointly with the Oyster Band. Who is this talented woman?

Answer: June Tabor

This was the second time June Tabor had been awarded folksinger of the year, having previously won in 2004. June Tabor & the Oyster Band won best group, the album by them "Ragged Kingdom" won the best album award and the track from the album "Bonny Bunch of Roses" won the award for best traditional track.
June Tabor has been performing on the folk scene since the 1960s. In the 1970s she teamed up with Maddy Prior of Steeleye Span recording an album under the name "Silly Sisters". She also sang with "Fairport Convention" and the "Albion Band" in the 1990s amongst others.
6. Which band released the albums Burlesque (2006) and Hedonism (2010) amongst others, and also won the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards prize for "Best Live Act" five times out of seven, from 2005 to 2011?

Answer: Bellowhead

Bellowhead were a bit larger than your average folk group, the line-up consisting of 11 people at one time including a brass section. I have heard them described as a folk orchestra. Having seen them live, I can attest to this being a very good description.
In addition to being awarded the "best live act" award in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010 & 2011 (the last time this was awarded) the group won the best group at the same awards in 2007 & 2011. Having seen them live and listened to the CDs I am of the firm opinion that the recordings were very good but the live performance was far superior.
The band was originally formed by John Spiers and Jon Boden, both of whom were previously members of the Ratcatchers who were Eliza Carthy's backing band, then the self-titled duo "Spiers and Boden", before putting together the group Bellowhead.
7. Which of the following is not a tradition associated with the annual festival at Cropredy?

Answer: Multiple stages

Fairport's Cropredy Convention, previously known as Cropredy Festival was originally a reunion concert for Fairport Convention in 1976. Over 40 years later it was being held annually, except for the 2020 edition which was cancelled due to Covid-19. Two long standing members of Fairport Convention (Simon Nicol & Dave Pegg) are still involved in the organisation of it.
With these connections it is little surprise that Fairport Convention are the normal closing act on the Saturday evening.
Richard Thompson, as a founding member of Fairport is a regular performer, and it is tradition (although not guaranteed) that it rains during his performances.
Singer-songwriter Richard Digance has been the compere and first act on Saturday for many years. From 2002 to 2019 he only missed one year.
But the festival only has one stage for the 20,000 strong crowd. Some music is performed at the local pubs but these are outside of the festival.
8. In 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic was sweeping the world. Because of this a well-known singer-songwriter added a new verse to their most famous song, 50 years after writing the original. Which of these singer and song combinations is this?

Answer: Ralph McTell (Streets of London)

All of these are well known folk singers, but it is Ralph McTell with "Streets of London" who added an extra verse. The song was originally written in 1968, inspired by the sights he saw around Europe. Originally it was going to be entitled "Streets of Paris" but by the time he first recorded it he had set it in London.
Of the wrong answers, Sandy Denny, who sang with Fairport Convention and Fotheringay died in 1978 so was unable to write any more songs or verses.
Maddy Prior sang with Steeleye Span, they did record the song "Somewhere in London" but it was written by fellow band member Peter Knight.
Richard Thompson has written many songs but has not notably added a verse to Lotteryland. I would not describe it as his most famous song either.
9. In 2013 an accident at a venue in Guildford, Surrey, caused the death of the manager and one of the singers of which shanty singing group?

Answer: Fisherman's Friends

The singing group "Fisherman's Friends", also known as "Fishermen's Friends" and sometimes "Port Isaac's Fisherman's Friends" depending on which album cover you look at, were the unfortunate victims. The incident involved a large roller shutter door, the sort often encountered at theatre stage-doors.
The number of members in the group has varied over the years, but at the time they were signed up to a contract in 2009 the number was 9. The last time I saw them live pre-covid lockdown they had 7 active members.
There is also a film about the Fisherman's Friends, I believe it to be accurate in two areas. The music and the location, for everything else add salt.
The other options are all groups that have been on the UK folk circuit in the early 21st century.
10. Hand in hand with folk music there is Morris dancing. Which of the following is NOT a Morris dancing troupe?

Answer: Show of Hands

I don't expect most people to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of UK Morris sides. But you might be aware that the duo "Show of Hands" are a folk-rock group from the (English) west country. The other three options are Morris dancing groups.
There are of course many more such groups in the UK but most of them include the word "morris" in their name, which would have been a bit of a giveaway.
Those who follow Morris dancing will know that there are various regional styles. However, the location of Morris sides nowadays is not necessarily an indication of the style they dance.
Of the three sides listed, Wharfedale Wazygoose (from Yorkshire) and Ely & Littleport Riot (from Cambridgeshire) dance in the border style. The border referred to is the English-Welsh border which is nowhere near the location of these dance sides.
The "Gog Magog Molly" is also based in Cambridgeshire, dancing in the Molly dancing tradition. One of the areas this tradition comes from is East Anglia, an area of England that includes Cambridgeshire.
