Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This song was originally released on the group's "In Color" album in 1977. However, it was not until the live version of the song which appeared on "Cheap Trick At Budokan" in 1979, that the song began to receive heavy airplay. To this day, it is one of their best known songs and was even used in a Diet Coke commercial. Can you name this song?

Answer: I Want You To Want Me

"I Want You To Want Me" is one of the band's signature songs. Penned by Rich Nielsen, the group's guitarist, this track has been covered by several artists including Lisa Loeb and Letters to Cleo. The original studio version actually had a piano part of the song, whereas the more famous live version is more rock oriented with no piano.
2. Like most bands, Cheap Trick was heavily inspired by the Beatles. As a result, they have covered a number of tracks from the Fab Four. One of those tracks was the first song listed on "The Greatest Hits" in 1991. This song was a huge hit for the Beatles many years earlier. Name this song.

Answer: Magical Mystery Tour

Written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, "Magical Mystery Tour" was originally released by the Beatles and appears on the album of the same name. The Cheap Trick version on "The Greatest Hits" was the only new track on that album as all of the other songs had been previously been released. I actually had the pleasure of hearing them sing this song live one time.

It is a song they rarely play in concert.
3. After the success of "Cheap Trick At Budokan", the band followed up with another smash album in 1979. I cannot tell you the name of the album because that would give you the answer to this question! The title track to this album is sung by Robin Zander as most of their songs are. However, it also has an interesting speaking part by Rick Nielsen. What song am I referring to?

Answer: Dream Police

"I sleep, they're wide awake, they won't leave me alone," is one of the lines from this lovely bizarre song written by Rick Nielsen. The title track to the album of the same name, "Dream Police" has become a concert staple with Rick speaking those wacky, memorable lines and then tossing a few guitar picks into the crowd.
4. In 1982, Cheap Trick released the album "One on One". It contained another song written by Rick Nielsen. It was also one of the first videos the band made which received heavy airplay on MTV back in the day. This same song also went to number one in Australia. What is the name of this song?

Answer: If You Want My Love

"If you want my love, you got it. When you need my love, you got it. I won't hide it, I won't throw your love away." "If You Want My Love" has a nice catchy chorus. Interestingly, "One on One" was the first album to feature Jon Brant on bass. The album was produced by Roy Thomas Baker.
5. "Cheap trick At Budokan" featured a cover version of a song made famous by Fats Domino many years earlier. Cheap Trick's version clocked in at over five minutes with a good amount of that being instrumental. Fats Domino also co-wrote this little ditty. Can you name this song?"

Answer: Ain't That a Shame

Cheap Trick's cover of "Ain't That a Shame" went to number 35 in the US Charts back in 1979. This song was also covered by Pat Boone and the Four Seasons as well. It was originally released in 1955 on the album "Rock and Rollin' with Fats Domino". His actual name is Antione Domino.
6. The commercial success of the band began to wane in the mid-1980s. In 1988, the band released the album "Lap of Luxury" which featured Cheap Trick's only number one single in the US. Interestingly it was one of the few songs the band released that they did not write themselves. Name this song.

Answer: The Flame

"The Flame" reached number one on the US Charts in July 1988. Ironically, Cheap Trick was very skeptical about recording the song, as they were resistant to record a ballad written by British songwriters Bob Mitchell and Nick Graham: A song they had never heard before. The album "Lap of Luxury" saw the return of bassist Tom Petersson to the band.
7. "That 70s Show" was an American sitcom that ran from 1998 to 2006. Ashton Kutcher was one of the better known cast members. However, did you know that Cheap Trick sang the theme song to this TV show. Can you name this song originally record by the band Big Star?

Answer: In The Street

"In the Street" was originally written by Alex Chilton and Chris Bell of the band Big Star. For the first season of "That 70s Show", a version sung by Todd Griffin was used. It was not until the second season that you hear the Cheap Trick version of "In The Street". The song appears on Cheap Trick's compilation album "Authorized Greatest Hits".
8. In 2003, Cheap Trick released the album "Special One". The first song on the album featured a song that has the exact same title as a very well known movie from 1992 starring Al Pacino and Chris O'Donnell. Al Pacino won an Oscar for his role in the movie. What is the name of this song?

Answer: Scent Of A Woman

Written by Rick Nielsen, Tom Petersson and Robin Zander, "Scent of A Woman" is similar to the movie in name only, as they were released 11 years apart. The album "Special One" was produced by Chris Shaw and Cheap Trick. " A man ain't a man in a one night stand," is one of the lines from this track.
9. Elvis Presley has had numerous songs that he sang that have been covered by other artists. Cheap Trick is no exception. In 1988, they released their own version of an Elvis Presley classic which reached number four on the US charts in 1988. Can you name this classic?

Answer: Don't Be Cruel

"Don't Be Cruel" was originally written by Otis Blackwell. The song appears on the band's album "Lap of Luxury" in 1988. The song also received heavy airplay on MTV thanks to a catchy video which featured drummer Bun E Carlos in a hilarious Elvis impersonation at the end. It was originally recorded by Elvis in 1956.
10. Cheap Trick released "Bang, Zoom, Crazy...Hello" in 2016. The album reached number 31 on the US Billboard 200 album chart. One of the songs that the band released was also accompanied by a music video. If you are alert, then maybe you can get this one. What is the name of this song.

Answer: When I Wake Up Tomorrow

Written by Julian Raymond, Robin Zander, Rick Nielsen and Tom Petersson, "When I Wake Up Tomorrow" is the third song listed on "Bang, Zoom, Crazy...Hello". This album features Daxx Nielsen (son of Rick) on drums as Bun E Carlo was no longer with the band at this point.
