Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what city was the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest held?

Answer: Istanbul

The 49th ESC was held in the Abdi Ipekci Stadium in Istanbul, also the venue for the first ever Eurovision semi-final on the 12th of May.
2. Who was the 2004 winner?

Answer: Ukraine

In the early stages of the voting it was very close between Ukraine, Serbia & Montenegro, Greece and Turkey. Towards the end, however, the Ukrainian entry "Wild Dances", sung by Ruslana, pulled away to emerge as the clear winner with 280 points to 263 for second-placed Serbia & Montenegro. Those two countries had topped the voting in the semi-final although their placings were reversed.
3. Ten countries made it through to the final by qualifying from the semi-final on the 12th of May. Which was not one of the lucky ones to make the final?

Answer: Denmark

Due to the sheer number of countries now wishing to take part in the ESC, it was decided this year to have a qualifying semi-final. Twenty-two countries took part in that semi-final with the lucky ten joining the fourteen automatic qualifiers in the final.
4. Who were the first and last countries to perform at the Contest final?

Answer: Spain and Sweden

The Spanish entry, Ramon, kicked off the show with "Para llenarme de ti" and Lena Philipsson finished it, representing Sweden with "It Hurts".
5. In total (including the semi-final), how many countries took part in the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: 36

Although only 24 of those took part in the final, residents of all 36 participating countries were able to vote in the final (and indeed in the semi-final).
6. Who sang the UK entry at the 2004 Contest?

Answer: James Fox

James avoided the indignity of 'nul points' suffered by Jemini, the 2003 UK entry, although his song "Hold On To Our Love" did not perform well, coming 16th with 29 points.
7. Which of these countries was not taking part in the Contest (final or semi-final) for the first time?

Answer: Monaco

Monaco last appeared in the Contest in 1979. The other three were all appearing for the first time, although only Albania made it past the semi-final. Serbia & Montenegro were also taking part for the first time, although they had previously performed under the country's old name, Yugoslavia.
8. Norway chalked up the infamous 'nul points' at the 2004 Contest final.

Answer: False

It looked for a long time as if Norway would indeed leave without a single point (for the fifth time in its Eurovision history) until its neighbour Sweden awarded it 3 points, the only points it would receive all evening. Poor Switzerland, though, garnered not a single point in the semi-final.
9. Several European countries did not take part at all in the 2004 Contest (final or semi-final). However, which of these did take part?

Answer: Portugal

Portugal took part in the semi-final but failed to win qualification through to the final. Hungary, Luxembourg and Italy did not take part at all, along with the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Moldova.
10. No country can vote for its own entry, but in the 2004 Contest, which were the only two entries to gain points from every country except their own?

Answer: Serbia & Montenegro and Greece

Ukraine came close to pulling off this feat too - only Switzerland did not give the Ukrainian entry any points.
