Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Rolling Stones track first made an appearance on their compilation album, "Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2)" (1969) and featured a version of a school ground rhyme in the lyrics?

Answer: Dandelion

"Dandelion" was originally released as the flip side to the band's 1967 single "We Love You", which was a top 20 hit in both UK and USA. The children's counting rhyme, "Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor" is used in the lyrics, but altered to mention "price, pauper, beggar man, thing" as well as "tinker, tailor, soldier, sailors lives. Rich man, poor man, beautiful, daughters wives".
2. Which song can be found at track three on side two of the Beatle's 1968 "White Album"

Answer: Blackbird

Although "Blackbird" is on an album by the band, it is well known as a pure Paul McCartney track. Written by him and performed by him with no input from the rest of the band, it is a track of simple beauty that never ages. Someone, other than McCartney who must be proud of the track is folk musician Donovan, as he taught McCartney how to finger pick the guitar in order to play this song.
3. The opening track to an album often sets the scene for what is to follow, so this was a great opener for Free's final album in 1973. What was the song?

Answer: Wishing Well

Free were in turmoil at the time of this album to say the least. Bass player and songwriter Andy Fraser had quit and guitar genius Paul Kossoff was becoming increasingly erratic due to his addiction to sedatives, yet they still produced one of their finest albums in "Heartbreaker" (1973).

Not only that, but "Wishing Well" became a huge hit for the band too, reaching number seven in UK charts, their last hit before they split up. Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke formed Bad Company, Tetsu Yamauchi joined the Faces, John "Rabbit" Bundrick would become keyboard player for the Who and Paul Kossoff sadly died in 1976 aged 25.
4. What is the opening track to side two of Pink Floyd's 1973 album, "Dark Side Of The Moon"?

Answer: Money

"Money" was released as a single and became Pink Floyd's first American hit record, peaking at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973. The track was a staple of Pink Floyd live shows and both Roger Waters and David Gilmour regularly perform it at solo gigs.
5. Time for some Led Zeppelin I think. What is the title of the beautiful ballad from "Led Zeppelin III" (1970), which contains the lyrics, "I was her love, she was my queen, and now a thousand years between"?

Answer: Tangerine

"Tangerine" is a reworking of the Yardbird's track "Knowing That I'm Losing You", which had been written by Jimmy Page in 1968 but not released by the band. "Led Zeppelin III", as with all of their albums contained many great tracks, but highlights for me include "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp", "Since I've Been Loving You" and of course "Immigrant Song".
6. With Bob Weir handling lead vocals, the Grateful Dead closed their 1970 album, "American Beauty" with this classic track. What was it called?

Answer: Truckin'

"Truckin'" has nothing to do with the life of a semi truck driver, but is actually about a drugs raid that occurred at a hotel the band were staying in and the lyrics mention several drugs as well as saying, "Sittin' and starin' out of the hotel window. Got a tip they're gonna kick the door in again. I'd like to get some sleep before I travel, But if you got a warrant, I guess you're gonna come in."
7. "October" (1981) by U2 is remembered for tracks such as "October" and "Gloria" but which song closed side one of the album?

Answer: Fire

"Fire" was actually released as the first single from the album and gave the band their first chart success in both UK (number 35) and their native Ireland (number four). It also gave the band their very first appearance on TV show, "Top Of The Pops" and oh my, how young they looked back then.
8. In 1987, Aerosmith released "Permanent Vacation" and this track gave them their first top five single on the Billboard Hot 100. What was it called?

Answer: Angel

"Angel" actually climbed to number three on the Billboard Hot 100, where it sat for two weeks, kept off the top spot by a combination of "Wishing Well" by Terence Trent D'Arby, "Anything For You" by Gloria Estefan and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" from Whitney Houston. Aerosmith's "Permanent Vacation" album also included hits such as "Rag Doll" and the great "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)".
9. In 1979, "Degüello" was the album, and ZZ Top were the band. What was the standout track that is a regular at live gigs?

Answer: Cheap Sunglasses

"When you get up in the morning and the light is hurt your head" has to be one of the best opening lines ever, especially in a song about such a random item. Classic ZZ Top, although Billy Gibbons has admitted that the song will never quite sound the same live as the studio recording, as it was recorded when his amplifier had just blown a tube.
10. What was the title of the opening track to Blue Oyster Cult's 1980 album, "Cultösaurus Erectus"?

Answer: Black Blade

"Black Blade" is well known for having lyrics written by science fantasy author Michael Moorcock and is about "Stormbringer", the black sword of Elric of Melniboné, a character in several of Moorcock's novels and short stories. Moorcock has also collaborated with the band on tracks such as "Veteran of Psychic Wars" from 1981s "Fire Of Unknown Origin" and "Great Sun Jester" from the 1979 album, "Mirrors".
