Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of which band has Ritchie Blackmore been the only constant member, although vocalists have included Ronnie James Dio, Joe Lynn Turner and Graham Bonnet?

Answer: Rainbow

Blackmore initially found fame with Deep Purple and forming Rainbow helped cement his reputation as a talented guitarist as well as a demanding boss, as at times the band have seemed to have a revolving door for musicians. Deep Purple members Roger Glover and Don Airey have both played with Rainbow, as has Cozy Powell, drummer with the Jeff Beck Group and Dio bassist, Jimmy Bain.
2. Which band, of which Wayne Swinney has been the only constant member, had a hit on the UK and Australian rock charts in 2002 with "Always"?

Answer: Saliva

Saliva had great success early in their career, with 2001 tracks "Superstar" and "Click Click Boom" both being used in "The Fast and the Furious" movie franchise and "Always" hitting number one on the Billboard Alternative chart in 2002. Their music was also used in the "Resident Evil" movie franchise in 2002 and the 2003 movies, "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - The Cradle of Life" and "Daredevil."
3. Between 1991 and 2006, Bruce Foxton was a member of Stiff Little Fingers, but of which band was he formerly a member?

Answer: The Jam

The Jam had chart success right from the off in UK as their debut single, "In The City" reached number 40. They went on to have four UK number ones with "Going Underground" and "Start" in 1980 and "Town Called Malice" and "Beat Surrender" in 1982. Following the band's breakup in 1982, Paul Weller formed Style Council, while Rick Buckler formed Time UK and Foxton had a short solo career before joining Stiff Little Fingers.
4. Between 1998 and 2006, Steve Augeri was vocalist with which band, appearing on the albums, "Arrival" and "Generations"?

Answer: Journey

Steve Perry is the vocalist that most people associate with Journey, as it was with him that the band found their biggest successes, with albums such as "Departure" (1980), "Frontiers" (1983) and the mega selling "Escape" (1981). Perry quit the band in 1997 and Augeri was hired as his replacement, before health problems forced him to leave mid tour in 2006, being replaced by Jeff Scott Soto. Soto finished the tour but didn't record any new material with the band and left in 2007, to be replaced by Filipino vocalist Arnel Pineda, with whom the band once again found huge success, hitting the top five on the Billboard 200 chart in USA, with their first album with Pineda, "Revelation" (2008).
5. English duo Mick Jones and Ian McDonald formed which iconic American band in 1976?

Answer: Foreigner

The original line up of Foreigner included three Britons, with Dennis Elliott being the original drummer alongside Jones and McDonald, and three Americans, so upon realising that whatever country the band were in, at least half of them would be foreigners, the band name was born. Right from the start, the band were much more successful in USA than UK, as their first six albums all hit the top 20 on Billboard 200 in USA, but only two managed to crack the UK top 20, although one of these, 1984s "Agent Provocateur", did reach number one. Of the original six members, only Jones is an ever present, as bassist, Ed Gagliardi left in 1979, McDonald and keyboard player Al Greenwood left in 1980, Elliott in 1993 and vocalist Lou Gramm called it a day in 2003.
6. Of which Christian rock band, who reached number two on the Billboard 200 album chart with "Awake" in 2009, has John Cooper been the only constant member?

Answer: Skillet

Formed in 1996, Skillet initially found success only on the Billboard Christian chart in USA, but that all changed in 2009, with the release of their seventh album, "Awake" which shot into the Billboard 200 and was only kept off the top spot by Colbie Caillat and her "Breakthrough" album.

The band's next two releases, "Rise" (2013) and "Unleashed" (2016) both continued the run of success, with singles released from the albums also finding success on the mainstream U.S. rock charts.
7. In 1969, Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart left the Jeff Beck Group to join which band?

Answer: Faces

Faces were formed out of the ashes of Small Faces, when Steve Marriott left the band to form Humble Pie. Although they were only together from 1969 to 1975, Faces were a hugely influential band, as well as being one of my all time favourites, with their classic line up of Rod Stewart on vocals, Ronnie Wood on guitar, drummer Kenney Jones, Ian McLagan on keyboards and Ronnie Lane playing bass.

The band found chart success in UK with timeless tracks such as "Stay With Me" (1971), "Cindy Incidentally" (1973) and the wonderfully titled, "You Can Make Me Dance, Sing or Anything (Even Take the Dog for a Walk, Mend a Fuse, Fold Away the Ironing Board, or Any Other Domestic Shortcomings)" (1974).
8. Since 1979, Mark Gable and Ian Hulme have been members of this band, who had a huge hit in 1987 with "Run To Paradise"?

Answer: The Choirboys

I have never understood how global success missed the Choirboys. They may be well known for "Run To Paradise" but also had many more great tracks, such as "Struggletown" (1988), "Della Meets Mr Danger" (1994) and "Running From The Storm" (1983) which epitomise the pub rock sound.

They are well known for covering several AC/DC tracks at live gigs often performing lesser known tracks such as "Little Lover", "Show Business" and "Love Song" from the band's "High Voltage" (1975) album.
9. For just two short years in the 1960s, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton were known collectively as which band?

Answer: Cream

Cream were the band that not only influenced so many others, but also wrote the history books. With a line up comprising two former members of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in Clapton and Bruce, along with Baker from the Graham Bond Organisation, they were quite rightly regarded as rock's first supergroup and in 1968, their "Wheels Of Fire" album became the first platinum-selling double album in the world. Sadly, after just two years, egos got in the way of band harmony and the group called it a day, but what a legacy they left.
10. Who, in 2011 became the first unsigned band to make the cover of "Rolling Stone" magazine?

Answer: The Sheepdogs

The Sheepdogs, from Saskatoon, Canada, won a contest by "Rolling Stone" magazine to find the best unsigned band, promoting them overnight from small gigs across Canada to cover stars playing on the Jimmy Fallon show on TV. The boys have since had four top 20 albums in Canada between 2011 and 2018, and had their track, "Feeling Good" played by CBC during the women's ice hockey final at the 2014 Sochi Olympics as well as being the goal song for the men's team at the 2015 IIHF World Championship. Sheepdogs and hockey eh. What could be more Canadian?
