Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Obviously one of the band leaders has "Fitz" in his name. There is another important band member who plays tambourine and does backing vocals. Occasionally this member does lead vocals. Who is this?

Answer: Noelle Scaggs

Noelle Scaggs was the only female to appear on the band's first three albums. She plays the tambourine and other percussion instruments. On most songs, she provides backing vocals and/or co-lead vocals with Michael Fitzpatrick. On some songs, such as the title track of the debut album "Pickin' up the Pieces" and "The End" from the album "More Than Just a Dream" she sings some lead vocals. In concerts, she encourages the audience to participate. She's a huge part of the sound of Fitz and the Tantrums as well as a huge part of why they are so fun.
2. When Fitz and the Tantrums were formed, they did not use which instrument?

Answer: Lead electric guitar

Michael Fitzpatrick said that he is tired of the electric guitar because almost every popular musician of the last 50 years has used it. Instead, he achieves a loud sound by using two electric keyboard players: James King and Jeremy Ruzumna. King also plays the saxophone and flute. While the whole band is great, I would say that King and Ruzumna are the two best musicians in the band.

John Wicks plays the drums and Joseph Karnes plays the bass guitar. Of course a bass guitar is still an electric guitar, but Fitz and the Tantrums do not have the kind of electric guitar that Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page play.
3. In 2010, what popular singer invited Fitz and the Tantrums to play at his house for his web series?

Answer: Daryl Hall

Daryl Hall runs a popular web series called "Live From Daryl's house" in which he and a special guest play some songs together. Special guests on this show have included Kenny Loggins, Cheap Trick, Joe Walsh, Gavin Degraw, and Fitz and the Tantrums. Together, they did Daryl Hall songs "Girl I Love You" and "Sara Smile" as well as some Fitz and the Tantrums songs.

Michael Fitzpatrick's voice sounds almost exactly like Daryl Hall's voice. This similarity has been noticed by many people, even Daryl Hall's mother.
4. Which number is for the greed?

Answer: 2

"One! Two! Three! One is for the money, two is for the greed, three times that I told you that you're the one I just don't need."

"Moneygrabber" is the band's first hit. It went to number two on the US Adult Alternative Songs Chart.
5. According to Fitz, is it better to start a relationship with a rich girl or a poor girl?

Answer: It's just best to remain alone

"The rich girls break your heart, the poor girls take your money I confess and I repent for the things I've done, my soul is spent on rich girls and poor girls." That is the chorus for the song "Rich Girls" on the debut album "Pickin' up the Pieces." The first verse of the song expands on how rich girls break your heart. The second verse tells you all about the poor girls. In the end, Fitz decides he needs neither.

This song SHOULD be a major hit played constantly on radio stations everywhere. Sadly, that doesn't seem to be the case.
6. Which song alternates between "Hey" and "Woo"?

Answer: Dear Mr. President

"Dear Mr. President" is on Fitz and the Tantrums' first full album "Pickin' up the Pieces." Mazda has used this song in commercials for their cars. Of course just hearing the song in the commercial doesn't do it justice: you have to hear the whole song to know how good it is. This song is a message to a certain man, or possibly a certain woman, with lots of money and power. Fitz wants that man or woman to use what he or she has to help the struggling, less-fortunate families.

Unless you live in a time where corruption and poverty are over, this song is just as relevant today as it was when it was written. And if you do live in such a time, could you please use your time machine to bring me to that time?
7. What was the name of their first EP?

Answer: Songs for a Break-up, Volume 1

Fitz has said that he doesn't plan on doing a Volume 2, although he could've changed his mind by the time you play this quiz. The title is just a reference to the fact that heartbreak is always going to be part of life, and that he expects that there will be more break-ups in the future, and that the songs on that EP are just about what he has experienced so far.

The wrong answers are all names of songs on this EP.
8. The title of their second album is "More Than Just a Dream." This phrase appears in which song?

Answer: Out of My League

"Out of My League" is the first single on the album. This song charted in the Canadian top 100 and, while it didn't crack the U.S. Billboard top 100, it has been in the top 20 in at least six other charts. It was number one on the US Alternative Songs chart.
9. Which song is known for its whistling hook?

Answer: The Walker

Ah, yes. The whistling hook is what started my fanship of Fitz and the Tantrums, as soon as I found the song. Of course it helped that the rest of the song is just as awesome.

This song has a music video where a man standing in line at the DMV suddenly gets out of line and starts dancing. Other people join him, including Fitz and Noelle. The guy walks around town to the beat of the song, venting his frustration in ways such as punching a chunk out of a cement building, bending a "No Parking" sign in half, and when a police officer tries to write him a ticket for jaywalking, he throws the officer's papers out of his hand and storms off. The video ends with him suddenly back in line, implying that this whole sequence was just a daydream.

"The Walker" charted at number 67 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.
10. Vogue magazine compared Fitz and the Tantrums to James Brown. Which song by Fitz and the Tantrums mentions James Brown?

Answer: HandClap

"HandClap" is a single on Fitz and the Tantrums' third album, which is simply titled "Fitz and the Tantrums." This song charted at number 53 on the Billboard Hot 100. The phrase "I can make your hands clap" is mentioned several times throughout the song, usually followed by a few hand claps.

The chorus of the song ends with Fitz singing "I get on my knees and say a prayer, James Brown, that I can make your hands clap." This song isn't best-known for any words in the song though. It's best known for its keyboard hook which is heard at the beginning of the song and after each chorus.
