Gospel Greats -- 'Victory in Jesus' Quiz

'Victory in Jesus' is my favorite Gospel hymn. After compiling a number of Wordwise quizzes on old-time Gospel hymns, I couldn't resist the temptation to create one about the hymn which is sung by evangelical Christians around the world.

10. Complete the final word in the eighth line from Verse 3 of the hymn 'Victory in Jesus'. "And some sweet day I'll sing up there The song of __________."

Answer: victory

The missing word is 'victory'.

Often when I hear 'Victory in Jesus', I am reminded of the days I attended First Baptist Church in Elliot Lake, Ontario, in the 1980s. Hymns for the Sunday morning worship services were selected by the pastor and published in a bulletin given to everyone in attendance. However, at the evening worship service the tables were turned in the sense the pastor would invite members of the congregation for their favorite hymns for the people to sing. It was a moment a delightful and ever-bubbly mentally challenged girl would always eagerly look forward to.

No sooner would the pastor invite people to raise their hands if they had a favorite hymn to request, the girl, who was about fifteen, would get extremely excited. She would shoot up her arm, and jumping in her pew, she would say "oh, oh, oh, oh, oh" to get the pastor's attention. Every Sunday evening, the pastor, sporting a gigantic smile, would ask Irene what song she wanted, and every Sunday evening she would excitedly shout 'VICTORY IN JESUS'. When the congregation sang the hymn, it was as if her body became electrified as she was filled with so much excitement. Before long, the congregation became extremely adept at singing 'Victory in Jesus' at the Sunday evening services. And on the rare occasion Irene was not at church on a Sunday evening, some one would invariably request 'Victory in Jesus'. It was almost as if the hymn had to be performed to make a Sunday evening service official. Over the years, I lost track of Irene but I still think of her when ever I hear her favorite hymn. She would be delighted to know her favorite hymn is also my favorite.

Here are the words to the Gospel classic, 'Victory in Jesus':

"I heard an old, old story,
How a Savior came from glory,
How He gave His life on Calvary
To save a wretch like me;
I heard about His groaning,
Of His precious blood's atoning,
Then I repented of my sins
And won the victory.

Chorus
O victory in Jesus,
My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory,
Beneath the cleansing flood.

I heard about His healing,
Of His cleansing pow'r revealing.
How He made the lame to walk again
And caused the blind to see;
And then I cried, "Dear Jesus,
Come and heal my broken spirit,"
And somehow Jesus came and bro't
To me the victory.

Chorus
O victory in Jesus,
My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory,
Beneath the cleansing flood.

I heard about a mansion
He has built for me in glory.
And I heard about the streets of gold
Beyond the crystal sea;
About the angels singing,
And the old redemption story,
And some sweet day I'll sing up there
The song of victory.

Chorus
O victory in Jesus,
My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory,
Beneath the cleansing flood."
