Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1969 a song titled "Get In The Wind" was released on a 45 R.P.M. as well as on a self titled L.P. Paul Cotton played guitar in this band. Name the band.

Answer: Illinois Speed Press

It is Illinois Speed Press that released the song "Get In The Wind". Their music was hard, heavy, bluesy rock. The band featured two lead guitarists so there was plenty of out front and in your face guitar leads.
Illinois Speed Press was from the Chicago area. They started out in 1965 as The Rovin' Kind. Prior to that Paul Cotton was in a band named The Capitols. They were formed in 1958 by schoolmates at Thornton Township High School in Harvey, Illinois. In 1961 they became The Mus-Twangs. Next the band became The Starfires, then The Gentrys, and lastly The Rovin' Kind which was just prior to Illinois Speed Press.

As far as the wrong answers go, Pure Prairie League was know for the song "Amie", The Ides Of March were from the Chicago area and known for their smash hit "Vehicle" and JC Heartsfield was a local Illinois band especially known for their song "Music Eyes".
2. In 1972 a self titled album was released on the Columbia label with a song on it titled "Stairway To The Stars". It was a fine example of early 1970s hard rock. Do you recall who released this song?

Answer: Blue Oyster Cult

Blue Oyster Cult was the band in question. "Stairway To The Stars" was released on their first self titled album that was released in 1972 on the Columbia label. This L.P. and their second titled "Tyranny and Mutation", released in 1973, were excellent examples of raw hard rock. As time went on they became more polished and began releasing commercial songs such as "The Reaper", "Burnin' For You", and "Godzilla". These types of songs were the real money makers for the band.
Blue Oyster Cult began as a band named Soft White Underbelly. This was 1967 - 1968. Critics gave the band a bad review of one concert so they changed their name to Oaxaca and then to Stalk-Forrest Group. They recorded an L.P. as Stalk-Forrest Group in 1970 but it was not officially released until 2001. It was released on L.P. and C.D.

As for the bands that were the wrong answers, Savoy Brown released songs such as "Tell Mama", "Hellbound Train", "Needle And Spoon", and many others. Cactus released songs such as "Parchman Farm", "You Can't Judge a Book By The Cover" and many others. Hawkwind released songs such as "The Psychedelic Warlords (Disappear in Smoke)", "Silver Machine" and many others.
3. This band's debut album was released in 1973 on the Warner Brothers label. There is a thunderous hard rock song on this L.P. titled "Space Station #5". Which hard rock band released the L.P. with this song on it?

Answer: Montrose

The band is Montrose and the album was self titled. Ronnie Montrose played guitar and Sammy Hagar was lead singer on this L.P. Years after singing with Montrose and a solo career, Sammy Hagar became lead singer for Van Halen in place of David Lee Roth.
This first Montrose L.P. was a real hard rocker. There are two standout songs on the album which are titled "Rock The Nation" and "Space Station #5". Anyone who likes early 1970s hard rock or Sammy Hagar will want to hear this first Montrose L.P. Some have said that the L.P. was America's answer to Led Zeppelin, while others have said it was one of America's earliest heavy metal L.P.s.

As for the bands that were the wrong answers: Trapeze was a more obscure group. A few of their songs are: "It's Only A Dream", "The Giant's Dead Hoorah!", and "Fairytale". Fuse was a pre Cheap Trick band that released songs such as "Across The Skies", "Mystery Ship" and "4/4 3/4". Some Thin Lizzy songs are "The Boys Are Back In Town", "Jailbreak", and "Cowboy Song".
4. This band released an L.P. with the song "Speed King" on it. The L.P. was released in 1970 in the U.K. on the Harvest label and the same year in the U.S. on a different label. This was the band's first L.P. with a brand new vocalist. What was the name of this band?

Answer: Deep Purple

The band is Deep Purple and the album was "In Rock" which was released on the Warner Brothers label in the U.S. They played intense hard rock and are now considered pioneers of heavy metal. They were and are considered one of the "unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-seventies". The other two bands in the trinity are Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.
"In Rock" is Deep Purple's fourth L.P. It's the first one with Ian Gillan as lead vocalist. Prior to that, Rod Evans did the singing. When he left Deep Purple he went on to sing for Captain Beyond. Rod was with Deep Purple when their first hit, "Hush", was released. It was on their first L.P. from 1968 titled "Shades of Deep Purple". This was by far their biggest hit with Rod Evans. He was quite a talented vocalist as can be heard with "Hush" and especially on the Captain Beyond L.P. with the 3D cover.

As for the wrong answers, a few Motorhead songs are "I'm So Bad (Baby I Don't Care)", "Ace Of Spades", and "Orgasmatron". Rainbow songs are "Man on the Silver Mountain", "Since You Been Gone", and others. MC5 is very well known for their song "Kick Out the Jams". The original uncut version with foul language in the introduction is rare on L.P. The cleaned up version is more common.
5. The song "Don't Look Around" was on this band's second L.P. At one point they were a trio. Which of the following bands released "Don't Look Around"?

Answer: Mountain

The answer is Mountain. Mountain released the song "Don't Look Around" on their "Nantucket Sleighride" L.P. from 1970. Their most well known song, "Mississippi Queen", peaked at number 21 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart that same year. Mountain was one of the premier hard rock bands of the 1970s. Even though they were newly formed, they played a lengthy set of songs at the Woodstock Festival in 1969.
The lead singer for Mountain was the extremely overweight Leslie West who once tipped the scales at over 265 pounds. He did most of the singing and played lead guitar. Leslie was capable of going toe to toe with just about any other rock guitarist of the day. His vocals were gravelly and powerful and perfectly suited for the style of music the band played.
The bass player for the band was Felix Pappalardi. He did some of the singing. His voice was more suited for ballads. Felix died when his wife shot him in the neck in 1983 during an argument born out of jealousy. She was convicted of criminal negligence and served only two years of a four year sentence.
Corky Laing played drums for Mountain. He was a powerful and intense drummer who on occasion would play drums with his drumsticks in flames. Jack Bruce had also played bass with the band. At one time Mountain was called West, Bruce, And Laing.

As for the wrong answers, Cream was known for many songs. In particular, "White Room", "Crossroads", and "Sunshine Of Your Love". Derek And The Dominos was known for the original version of "Layla". UFO was known for "Doctor Doctor", "Rock Bottom", and others.
6. The song "Feel So Bad" was on this band's second L.P. At the time of this L.P. the band consisted of four members. One was named Tony Stevens. What band is this?

Answer: Foghat

Foghat is the band. "Feel So Bad" was on their second album from 1973. It's listed as a self titled L.P., but had the unofficial title on the front cover in the form of a "visual pun". There was a picture of a rock printed on the front cover and just to the right of the rock, was a picture of a hard roll. So the unofficial title of the L.P. was "Rock & Roll".
Foghat's later L.P.s contained songs that were more album oriented and in the vein of commercial rock. These were songs such as: "Slow Ride", "Fool for the City", etc.
7. "Neighbor Neighbor" is a Southern hard rock song that appeared on this band's first L.P. This album was produced by manager Bill Ham. Any idea which band is in question here?

Answer: ZZ Top

"Neighbor Neighbor" was on the first L.P. released by ZZ Top in January of 1971. The title of the L.P. was "ZZ Top's First Album"." The style of their music falls into the category of southern or Texas hard rock. "Neighbor Neighbor" is a prime example of the genre.
ZZ Top was a trio consisting of Billy Gibbons - guitar, vocals, Dusty Hill - bass, keyboards, vocals, and Frank Beard - drums, percussion. Dusty Hill and Frank Beard came to ZZ Top from the band American Blues. Billy Gibbons came from the band The Moving Sidewalks.
American Blues released two albums. They were "American Blues Is Here" and "American Blues Do Their Thing". The Moving Sidewalks released one L.P. It's titled "Flash". An original vinyl copy of "American Blues Do Their Thing" is affordable. "American Blues Is Here" and "Flash" are both expensive L.P.s. They are available as reissues though and are very affordable as such.
8. The song "Can I Tell You" was a track on the first L.P. this band released. They went on some well known hit songs and were most popular in the 1970s. This band is one of the more influential bands in the history of progressive rock. Who are they?

Answer: Kansas

"Can I Tell You" is the opening song on the first L.P. by Kansas, which was self titled and released in 1974. The song was also released as a single but failed to chart.
"Can I Tell You" is a bone crunching hard rock song with searing violin. Violins are a true oddity in hard rock bands but it worked for Kansas. They were very successful with hits such as "Carry On Wayward Son", "Dust in the Wind", and "Point of Know Return".
In the beginning, Kansas was formed with the merging of the best members of the two bands White Clover and Saratoga. According to former band member Kerry Livgren, things were so meager at the beginning that "We paid ourselves $1 a day."
9. "Like You Do" was the title of a song from the second album this band recorded. It was released on the Epic label from 1972. What band released this song?

Answer: REO Speedwagon

"Like You Do" was a song from the second album by REO Speedwagon simply titled "REO Two" from 1972. REO Speedwagon was formed in 1967 out of Champaign, Illinois. Their first few albums were still a bit raw. The band had no idea how much more polished their music would become, and they certainly had no idea that it wouldn't be long before they became superstars.
10. The song "Sugar The Road" was the opening cut on the album it was released on. The band we're looking for here featured a very talented lead guitar player. This L.P. was released in 1970. Which band released this song and L.P.?

Answer: Ten Years After

"Sugar The Road" was released by Ten Years After on their "Cricklewood Green" L.P. This L.P. was released in the U.K. and U.S. on the Deram label in 1970.
The music on "Cricklewood Green" was blues based with some sound effects. It was the blistering speed of Alvin Lee's lead guitar that put Ten Years After in the hard rock zone. They gained notoriety after playing at the 1969 Woodstock Festival. It was their ten minute version of the song "I'm Going Home" that literally skyrocketed the band into worldwide fame.
Unfortunately, Alvin Lee passed away on March 6, 2013. He was undergoing a normally routine surgical procedure in a hospital in Spain when unforeseen circumstances arose.
11. "Still Alive And Well" was a song recorded on an L.P. that was released in 1973. A few other songs on the album were "Rock & Roll", and "Rock Me Baby". Which band/musician released this song?

Answer: Johnny Winter

The hard rockin' blues guitarist Johnny Winter is the answer. He was known as one of the all time greats and played a nine song set at the original Woodstock festival in 1969. His encore was "Johnny B. Goode" which really showed his guitar prowess.
"Still Alive And Well" is from the L.P. of the same name, and is considered by many to be the highlight of the L.P.
Johnny's brother Edgar was also a good musician. He played saxophone and keyboards. His biggest hit songs were the amazing instrumental "Frankenstein" and the melodic pop rock song "Free Ride". They did a live L.P. together in 1976 titled "Together". The brothers were truly amazing to see. Both were albino and had very long white hair. At one time, Johnny's hair was down to his waist.
Sadly, back in 2014, Johnny passed away. His music lives on.
12. "Ride The Sky" was probably the most well known song on this German band's debut L.P. The lead singer was John Lawton. The music they played showed influences of Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, and Black Sabbath. Name the band.

Answer: Lucifer's Friend

Lucifer's Friend recorded "Ride The Sky' on their debut L.P. from 1970. The original German L.P. was issued on the Philips label, while the U.S. L.P. was issued on the Billingsgate label.
I've heard many comparisons made, of part of the song 'Ride The Sky', to Led Zeppelin's 'Immigrant Song'. If you give it a listen you'll recognize which part of the song that is.
13. "I'm Gonna Make You Feel It" is a song on this band's second L.P. At this point the band had not been truly recognized for the superstars they would later become. This second L.P. also contained the song that eventually put this band on the map. Name the band.

Answer: Styx

Styx is the answer. "I'm Gonna Make You Feel It" was on the second album that Styx released, titled simply, "Styx II". It came in a die cut cover and was on the Wooden Nickel label from 1973. Dennis Deyoung wrote the song but James Young was lead singer. The first two Styx L.P.s were unlike their later L.P's. the music was more in a hard rock/art rock direction.

There was a lot of strong lead guitar as well as organ. "I'm Gonna Make You Feel It" is a fine example of that. "Styx II" also contained the song "Lady" which was a power ballad that was the first big hit for Styx. it didn't chart until about two years after the song was released. "Lady" peaked at number six on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 Singles chart ending March 8, 1975.
14. "Dancing Madly Backwards (On A Sea Of Air)" is a song on this band's L.P. that was released in 1972. It is a guitar driven, hard rocking progressive song. The band was somewhat obscure and never had a hit song. Which band am I talking about here?

Answer: Captain Beyond

"Dancing Madly Backwards (On A Sea Of Air)" is a fine example of progressive hard rock. The band who released the song was Captain Beyond. It was on their self titled debut L.P. from 1972. The original U.S. pressing on vinyl was issued with a 3D cover.
Captain Beyond was formed out of members of various other bands. The lead singer, Rod Evans, came from Deep Purple. He sang lead on their early hit song, "Hush". The drummer, Bobby Caldwell, had previously worked with Johnny Winter. Lee Dorman had previously played bass and Larry 'Rhino' Reinhardt previously played guitar with Iron Butterfly.
Captain Beyond is is mostly known for their self titled L.P. It was dedicated to the memory of Duane Allman. The strange thing about the L.P. is that it was released on the Capricorn label which released southern rock L.P.s by bands like the Allman Brothers. Capricorn was excited about signing Captain Beyond. When it came to recording a second L.P. Capricorn wanted them to explore their southern rock side. The problem was, they didn't have one. Go to the youtube website if you want to hear Captain Beyond. It is one of the best websites for hearing obscure and most other kinds of music.
15. In 1970 this band released an L.P. on the Epic label. It's a fairly obscure band and L.P., but that would change, as the core of the band transitioned into other more well known bands. The opening cut, "Wonder Woman" is extremely hard rock. Any idea of what the name of the band is?

Answer: Attila (Billy Joel band)

Attila is the band. They released only one L.P. which was self titled and on the Epic label from 1970. Attila was a two man band featuring Billy Joel on vocals and Hammond B-3 organ. The only other band member was Jon Small on drums, The first time I heard this L.P. I didn't notice the absence of a guitar because the keyboard seemed to fill in for it. The music on this L.P. sounds absolutely nothing like Billy Joel.

The vocals and music are typical of very hard rock and almost border on heavy metal at times. Try youtube.com to hear Attila.

There are usually several Attila songs on the website that you can listen to.
