Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Viva Las Vegas" was released by Elvis Presley as a b-side single in 1964. The record enjoyed modest success without breaking into the top ten of the charts. On what movie's soundtrack did Elvis include the song?

Answer: "Viva Las Vegas" (1964)

The movie and its soundtrack had the Elvis standard of universal appeal but both were met with new "competition" - from the Beatles. Though, it took an initial back seat to this new "British invasion" the song by Elvis would go on to become one of the most identifying anthems of the city of Las Vegas. It has been used in countless markets: film, TV, advertising, spoofs, etc.
2. Country music legend, Buck Owens, lamented his life long dream was to have his name "up in lights" and to "get a standing ovation" in Vegas. In what song did he sing of his strong will to succeed in Vegas?

Answer: Big In Vegas

Buck Owens released "Big In Vegas" late in 1969 and it did well for him - quickly making it inside the top ten on major - domestic and international - charts. It may be about a town in Nevada but the song is truly as typical of Bakersfield (California) Buck Owens style as any of his songs were. Great country music; or, as Buck himself preferred to call it: American Music.
3. The multi-award winning, country music songbird, Emmylou Harris included "Ooh, Las Vegas" on her second solo album "Elite Hotel" in 1975. It was written by her close friend, collaborator and mentor, who had already included it on one of his albums. Who is he?

Answer: Gram Parsons

"Ooh, Las Vegas" was included on Gram's second solo release, (the self descript titled) "Grievous Angel". It was released in 1973 but sadly for the music world - posthumously. Gram Parsons died from an overdose of morphine and alcohol a few months before the release of the album. Emmylou Harris continues to credit him with much of her early success. You can hear Emmylou singing vocals with Gram on "Ooh, Las Vegas" (and, other songs) on that album.
4. Las Vegas was the vacation destination of choice in the duet "Vegas". You may not recall the name Jeannie Bare - who sang one part of the duet - but you should recall her singing partner. Who was he?

Answer: Bobby Bare

Jeannie Bare recorded "Vegas" with her husband, Bobby Bare for his album, "The Essential Bobby Bare" (1976). It was released as a single in 1976 but saw only a bit of chart success - peaking at number 30. Although, Bobby Bare has enjoyed much better success as a singer and song writer than he did with "Vegas", it is a fun song. Who would not love a song that includes the line: "Leave your dogs with your brother"?
5. In 1983 the B-52s were singing "rockin' on the roulette wheel" and "I got the plan, I got the plan" in a song from their third album, "Whammy" (1983). What is the name of this bouncy, somewhat "new wave" inspired song?

Answer: Queen of Las Vegas

The B-52s had intended to include "Queen of Las Vegas" on their second album, "Mesopotamia" (1981) but for various reasons it was not included. Though this song was not to be released as a single, obviously the B-52s felt strongly about its potential as an album cut. It is a catchy little tune.
6. Which rock-and-roll band included a remake of the Elvis Presley standard, "Viva Las Vegas" on their "Greatest Hits" (1992) album when it originally released in 1992?

Answer: Z Z Top

It was "that little old band from Houston, Texas" - Z Z Top. Many artists and groups have recorded and released their own version of "Viva Las Vegas" - including both stars of the movie of the same name, Elvis Presley and Ann-Margret. The rock-blues version by Z Z Top, though, is a unique and unforgettable adaptation of an already lively and enjoyable song. "Ya'll still want me to come with you"... (The opening line from their song; said in an Elvis voice over.)
7. Who would think about Bono singing Elvis? The U2 vocalist does a fabulous performance on an Elvis Presley standard; it was included on the soundtrack for the movie, "Honeymoon in Vegas" (1992). Which song?

Answer: Can't Help Falling in Love

"Can't Help Falling in Love" has been featured in many films since Elvis introduced it in "Blue Hawaii" (1961). And, it may be a shorter list to enumerate singers who have NOT recorded it than to list those who have. It will always be "an Elvis song" but many others - including Bono - have done an amazing rendition.

The soundtrack for "Honeymoon in Vegas" (1992) did sell reasonably well but pales when compared to "Blue Hawaii" (1961) which stayed at number one for 20 weeks and inside the top ten for 39 weeks.
8. In 1993 the USA heard the very first solo from a soon to be super star. That song was "Leaving Las Vegas" from the album, "Tuesday Night Music Club" (1993). Who is the singer?

Answer: Sheryl Crow

"Leaving Las Vegas" was the first single release (in the US) for Sheryl Crow but it would not be without a bit of controversy. After a performance of the song on "Late Night with David Letterman", Sheryl Crow stated that the song was "autobiographical." This did not go over well with the song's authors who felt she was taking undue credit for its writing.
9. In this song, Faith Hill obviously did not let tradition override her intentions to be married. In what whimsical song does she suggest that they "leave the single life behind"?

Answer: Let's Go To Vegas

Faith Hill included "Let's Go To Vegas" on her second album, "It Matters To Me" (1995). As a single the song did well for Faith; it made it into the top ten on all major charts. The video of "Let's Go To Vegas" did well, too, and included an Elvis impersonator and feather be-decked showgirls.
10. Hootie and The Blowfish included a song in homage to Vegas that by many accounts is based on a life experience of lead singer, Darius Rucker. What is the name of this song from their third album, "Musical Chairs" (1998)?

Answer: Las Vegas Nights

Although, "Las Vegas Nights" was an album cut (not released as a single) it garnered some attention as a sweet love song. And, the rumor that it was written by Rucker to an (unnamed) girl in a relationship gone wrong only made it more admirable and desirable to his fans.
