1. Who was the lead singer for Dire Straits?

Answer: Mark Knopfler

Mark Knopfler was born in Scotland. He now has a solo career. He is a great guitarist and songwriter.

(I have seen him live; he was amazing!)

2. Which of the following Police songs was the Dire Straits hit single "Money for Nothing" thought to be extremely similar in structure to?

Answer: Don't Stand So Close to Me

Sting was credited for the song "Money for Nothing" for a few reasons. He didn't want credit, but his producers did because it would bring in money. He was on holiday when Dire Straits recorded it, and was invited by Mark Knopfler to sing in it, so he sang backup.

But his producers decided that the song was structured so similarly to the Police song "Don't Stand So Close to Me", they had him get credit for "Money for Nothing". Not that Mark Knopfler really minded.

3. What was the second Dire Straits album called?

Answer: Communique

"Communique" didn't make a big splash, but this fan thinks it's an awesome album. There is no Dire Straits II album; both "Brothers in Arms" and "Making Movies" are later albums by Dire Straits. Some great songs from "Communique" are "Where Do You Think You're Going?" and "Portobello Belle".

David Knopfler, Mark Knopfler's brother and one of the band's guitarists, left the band because he didn't want to practice enough. Mark was the lead and held the band together; Pick Withers was the drummer; John Illsley was the bassist.
