Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Making Movies" was the third studio album from Dire Straits. What year was it released in?

Answer: 1980

It was their first record released in the 1980s. It followed "Dire Straits" (1978) and "Communique" (1979). "Love over Gold" was the follow up album in 1982.

The album was certified as gold or platinum in seven different countries.
2. The album saw five officials singles released, but only one charted on the Billboard Hot 100 list; which was it?

Answer: Skateaway

"Solid Rock" reached number 56 on the Hot Rocks Tracks list, "Expresso Love" reached number 39 on the same list and "Romeo and Juliet" reached number eight on the UK charts. None of those three charted on the Hot 100 in the U.S.

"Skateaway" reached number 58 on the Hot 100, 31 on the Hot Rocks list and 37 on the UK charts.
3. What country had the highest certification (gold, platinum, diamond ...)for "Making Movies"?

Answer: United Kingdom

The album was certified platinum in the U.S. meaning it sold a million copies. It went double platinum in the UK, meaning it sold at least 1.2 million copies (they certify platinum at 600,000)

The album was certified gold in Germany, meaning it sold at least 250,000 copies. It sold at least 100,000 copies in France to be certified gold there too.

At the time the record was released, exact sales figures weren't reported publicly, instead data is used only from the sales certifications.
4. How many tracks were on the original release of the album?

Answer: 7

Only "Les Boys" and "Hand in Hand" weren't released as singles, the other five songs on the album all were.

The original vinyl pressing had "Tunnel of Love", "Romeo and Juliet" and "Skateaway" on the A side, and "Expresso Love", "Hand in Hand", "Solid Rock" and "Les Boys" on the B side.
5. Which guitar player, who performed on the album, wasn't credited?

Answer: Sid McGinnis

Mark Knopfler, Pick Withers and John Illsley were the main band. Roy Bittan, known for playing with Bruce Springsteen in the "E Street Band", and Sid McGinnis, known for playing playing in the CBS Orchestra (mostly with the "Late Night with David Letterman" show) were additional musicians hired to work on specific songs. McGinnis wasn't given credit on the album, but Bittan was.
6. Prior to finishing work on the album, Mark Knopfler's brother left the band. What was his name?

Answer: David

After the stress of the tours for the first two albums the band released, David Knopfler decided to leave the band before "Making Movies" was completed. He was still featured in concert footage released in conjunction with the album, but he wasn't featured on the album at all.

Mark Knopfler re-recorded all of his brother's pieces for the album release.
7. The title for the album was based off a line in which song?

Answer: Skateaway

The line was in the song "Skateaway". The music video for the song featured Jayzik Azikiwe as the rollergirl who was featured in the song.

A song "Making Movies" was also recorded for the album, but ultimately was cut before it was released.
8. Cut from the album, which song, among those listed, is the only one that wasn't later included on Mark Knopfler's solo debut?

Answer: Twisting by the Pool

"Suicide Towers", "Twisting by the Pool", "Sucker for Punishment" and "Making Movies" were the three songs cut from the album.

"Are We in Trouble Now", "Golden Heart" and "A Night in Summer Long Ago" were all tracks on Mark Knoplher's debut solo album "Golden Heart" (1996).

Frontman Mark Knophler, who also played guitar and wrote most of the songs on the album, talked about the songs that were recorded but cut during an interview with "Rolling Stone" in 1980.

"Twisting by the Pool" was later released as a single when it was included on the album "ExtendedancEPlay" in 1983.
9. An authorized short film using the music videos made from songs on this album was released in 1981.

Answer: True

Lester Bookbinder directed the three music videos. They were for the songs, "Romeo and Juliet", "Tunnel of Love", and "Skateaway".

The album was after all called "Making Movies" so the band had to make a movie to go with it. While the movie was generally a home release on both VHS and Betamax, it had a short run in a few theaters as well.
10. Other than a small blue strip with some writing on it, the album cover was just one solid color in a square. What color was it?

Answer: Red

The cover was all red, other than the small blue strip down the right hand side that had the album and band name's on it. That writing was in white.

The back cover had the majority of the text, such as the track listing, written in black font. It was also a basic red design, though with more writing and contractually obligated logos.
