Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dee Dee Sharp had a huge hit with "Mashed Potatoes" and every kid on Bandstand was doing the dance. Dee Dee followed up this mega hit with a knockoff of the original. Can you name it?

Answer: Gravy (for My Mashed Potatoes)

The Mashed Potato was one of the biggest dance crazes ever, hitting the scene in the early sixties. Songs like "Please Mr. Postman" by the Marvellettes were designed for this knee numbing dance.
2. "Do the Hucklebuck, do the Hucklebuck, if you don't know how to do it then you're out of luck." Pure poetry. Who introduced us to "The Hucklebuck"?

Answer: Chubby Checker

Chubby introduced a number of new dances including the Twist and the Pony. And he's still working those oldies today. Where does he get the energy?
3. "Here we go loop-di-loop, shake it up baby. Here we go loop-di-lie, bend over let me see you shake a tail feather", (repeat several times) Who were the performers who sang "Shake a Tail Feather"?

Answer: The Five Du-tones

This great tune never made it as a crossover when it was first released but its use in movies, etc. has made the song more popular than ever.
4. The Twist led to a number of variations - the Slow Twist (There's no, no twistin' like slow, slow twisting), et al. One of these variations was "The Peppermint Twist". Who did it.

Answer: Joey Dee and the Starliters

Joey Dee and the Starliters was the house band at The Peppermint Lounge, the Studio 54 of the early '60's. So, they took advantage of the Twist craze with this mega hit. Hey, why not?
5. The Monkey was a dance craze of the 60's. Major Lance came out with a song called "Do the Monkey" but who came out with "Mickey's Monkey".

Answer: Smokey Robinson and the Miracles

"We're doin' Micky's Monkey, yaa, doin' Mickey's Monkey". Great tune with Smokey at his best.
6. The Beatles did a cover of "Twist and Shout" but who did the original?

Answer: The Isley Brothers

"Well, shake it up baby, twist and shout." The Isleys made the hit "Shout" ( a little bit softer now...) and rode back on the coattails of The Twist with this equally great tune.
7. When the British invasion took hold, Freddie and the Dreamers had a hit with which of the following tunes?

Answer: Do The Freddy

Not much of a dance, really, just flapping your arms and legs in time with the music. Thankfully, The Freddy died a quick death.
8. "For goodness sake, do the Hippie-Hippie Shake." Also part of the British Invasion, which group had a hit called "The Hippie Hippie Shake"?

Answer: The Swinging Blue Jeans

The Swinging Blue Jeans had this one hit then fell off the face of the planet. Pretty good song, though the dance never really caught on.
9. "Everybody's doin' a brand new dance now. Come on baby, do the ______" Can you fill in the blank?

Answer: Locomotion

Little Eva was just 14 years old when she hit the charts with this dance classic.
10. And finally, who can ever forget The Limbo, a dance(?) wherein one attempts to pass under a pole (a Limbo pole, perhaps?) that is lowered as more Limboers are eliminated. Okay, who did the minor masterpiece called "Limbo Rock"?

Answer: Chubby Checker

The limbo probably caused more injuries than any other dance craze, especially when they started doing it at senior centers and nursing homes. Not a good idea.
