Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From which Crickets (including Buddy Holly) tune come these lyrics? "Piddly pat, And sing to me love's story, And bring to me love's glory."

Answer: Heartbeat

In 1958, "Heartbeat" only got to number 82 on Billboard's Hot 100. "Well...All Right" was the "B" side of that song. "When You Ask About Love" (side A) and "Deborah" (side B) were 1959 songs by The Crickets (without Buddy Holly).

Buddy Holly formed the Crickets in 1956 in Lubbock, Texas. Holly was vocalist and lead guitar, Nikki Sullivan was rhythm guitar (later replaced by Sonny Curtis), Joe Mauldin was bass, and Jerry Allison was the drummer. They were a very successful group until they split in 1958.
2. Buddy Holly sang these words in which song? "The way you dance and hold me tight The way you kiss and say good ni-i-ight ... It's a crazy feelin' And I know it's got me reelin' When you say 'I love you so'."

Answer: Rave On

All of these tunes were by Buddy Holly. "Rave On" was a number 37 song on Billboard's Top 100 in 1958. "Take Your Time" was the B side. "Rock Around Ollie Vee" was a 1957 uncharted song. "Listen To Me" was the B side of "I'm Gonna Love You Too" (1958).

Before there were the Crickets, there was a Buddy Holly. He was born Charles Hardin Holley on September 7, 1936 in Lubbock, Texas. He learned to play the piano, fiddle, and guitar as a child. After he graduated from high school in 1955 he wanted a career in music. Already well-known as a performer in the Lubbock area, he was hired to open for Elvis Presley three times that year, and for Bill Haley & His Comets once. He also got a contract with Decca records, who misspelled his name as "Holly".
3. These lines are from which Crickets (with Buddy Holly) number? "Are you sure that I'm the only one? Is your love real or only fun?" "Just remember all the birds and bees Go by twos through life's mysteries."

Answer: Think It Over

"Think It Over" reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1958. "Fool's Paradise" was its B side. "Lonesome Tears" was the B side of "It's So Easy" (1958). "An Empty Cup (And A Broken Date)" is from an album in 1957.

For a number of reasons, primarily contractual ones, it was decided that records by the Crickets (with Holly) would be on the Brunswick label, and those just by Buddy Holly would be on Coral records. [Several of Holly's songs on Coral had other Crickets who played without attribution.]
4. Teens danced to these lyrics in what song by The Crickets, with Buddy Holly? "Well you are the one, makes me glad Any other one that, makes me sad. When some day, you'll want me, Well, I'll be there, wait and see ee ee."

Answer: Maybe Baby

They danced to "Maybe Baby," a number 17 hit on the Billboard Top 100 in 1958. "Tell Me How" was the B side to "Maybe Baby." "I'm Looking For Love" was the B side of "That'll Be the Day" (1957). "It's Too Late" first appeared on an album in 1957.

Many songs by The Crickets (with Holly) and by Holly himself did not first appear as singles. A significant number made their debut on albums. In this quiz, they are listed in the interesting information as "appeared on an album." One album by The Crickets (with Holly) is "The 'Chirping' Crickets" (Brunswick, 1957). One such album by just Holly (supposedly, but all the Crickets are listed as performers) is "Buddy Holly" (Coral, 1958).
5. The Crickets, including Buddy Holly, sang these words in what tune? "There's no use in me a-cryin'. I've done everything and now I'm sick of tryin'. I've thrown away my nights And wasted all my days over you."

Answer: It Doesn't Matter Anymore

In 1959, on Billboard's Hot 100, Holly (and his Crickets) had a posthumous number 13 hit as a single, but "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" was first released on an album in 1957. "Raining In My Heart," also from a 1957 album, was its B side. "You've Got Love" and "Rock Me Baby" were also from a 1957 album.

In 1958, Buddy Holly ended his business association with his manager, Norman Petty. The other Crickets kept Petty as their manager. Holly then split from the Crickets. After the split, The Crickets and Buddy Holly each had successful separate careers.
6. These lines come from what Buddy Holly song? "Gonna meet all my friends. Gonna have myself a ball. Gonna tell my friends, Gonna tell them all."

Answer: Real Wild Child

In 1958, on the Billboard Hot 100, "Real Wild Child" made it to number 68. "Oh, You Beautiful Doll" was its side B. The record was released as by Ivan. "True Love Ways" and its B side "That Makes It Tough" were recorded in 1958 and not released until 1960.

A few months prior to his split with the other Crickets, Holly married Maria Elena Santiago and moved to Greenwich Village. As a solo artist, Buddy Holly hoped to continue to write music and perform, to record with such artists as Ray Charles, and to work in film.
7. "Well, when Cupid shot his dart He shot it at your heart So if we ever part and I leave you You say you told me, an' you told me boldly That someday, well, I'll be blue." From what tune by the Crickets (with Buddy Holly) come these lyrics?

Answer: That'll Be The Day

"That'll Be The Day" was their only song to rank number one, topping the Billboard Best Seller chart in 1957. It also was number three on both the Top 100 and the Jockey lists. "Not Fade Away" was the B side of "Oh Boy!" (1957). "It's So Easy" was released as a single in 1958. And "Last Night" first appeared on an album in 1957.

Without Buddy Holly, the Crickets went on performing and recording into the 21st century, with a changing cast anchored much of the time by Jerry Allison, Sonny Curtis (who played guitar before Niki Sullivan), and Joe Mauldin. Among other things, they released numerous singles and albums, did session work for such artists as Bobby Vee and Eddie Cochran, and toured with Waylon Jennings.
8. Buddy Holly, backed by the Helen Way Singers, sang these words in which number? "Well you know a rolling stone don't gather no moss, And you cross your bridge when it's time to cross. Well you broke my heart when you said goodbye. Now the milk is spilt, but you're gonna cry."

Answer: Early In The Morning

These four songs are all by Buddy Holly in 1958. "Early In The Morning" got to number 32 on Billboard's Hot 100. [The original version by The Rinky-Dinks (Bobby Darin) reached number 24.] "Now We're One" was side B. "Girl On My Mind" (side A) and "Ting-A-Ling" (side B) were released together as a single.

Although he did not want to tour, Buddy Holly had yet to received royalties owed him and needed money. He agreed to go on the Winter Dance Party Tour and put together a new band with Waylon Jennings, Tommy Allsup, and Carl Bunch. They joined Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper) and began the tour by bus in January, 1959. After Bunch was hospitalized with frostbite contracted on the frigid bus (which had already broken down once), Holly contracted for a plane to take him, Jennings, and Allsup to Fargo, North Dakota, the nearest airport to their next stop in Moorhead, Minnesota. Jennings voluntarily gave up his seat to Richardson, and Allsup agreed to flip a coin with Valens, who won the seat. On February 2, 1959, the plane, piloted by Roger Peterson, took off in heavy snow and crashed shortly thereafter, killing all on board. [The next day, the first tribute song was recorded, "Three Stars" by Eddie Cochran. And in 1971, Don McLean's "American Pie" immortalized "the day the music died."]
9. The Crickets with Buddy Holly included these lines in what song? "Stars appear and the shadows are fallin' You can hear my heart a-callin' A little bit of lovin' makes everything right I'm gonna see my baby tonight."

Answer: Oh, Boy!

The Billboard Top 100 ranked "Oh, Boy!" at number ten. "Peggy Sue Got Married" and "Crying, Waiting, Hoping" (its B side) were recorded in 1957 and released as a single in 1959. "Send Me Some Lovin'" appeared on an album in 1957.

Buddy Holly, by himself, was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in its first group in 1986. The original four Crickets who played with Holly (Jerry Allison, Joe B. Mauldin, Niki Sullivan, and Sonny Curtis who replaced Sullivan) entered the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2012. In their induction citation, it is noted that they "contributed significantly" to the sound and success of Buddy Holly, that "their two-guitar, bass, and drums lineup would become a virtual blueprint for rock bands," and that they continued to contribute significantly to rock music after Holly's death.
10. These lyrics are from which Buddy Holly offering? [Don't think too hard. Just fill in the ...] "If you knew... Then you'd know why I feel blue Without Peggy, my... Oh well, I love you gal Yes, I love you...."

Answer: Peggy Sue

"Peggy Sue" was a number three Billboard Top 100 entry in 1957. "Everyday" was its B side. Released together as a single in 1958 were "I'm Gonna Love You Too" (side A) and "Listen To Me" (side B).

Buddy Holly's professional career lasted only about two years. He never had a number one song on Billboard's Top 100/Hot 100 charts. He lacked charisma, and was never a "teen-age idol." But he was an excellent guitarist and song writer, whose influence on music was significant. On its list of "100 Greatest Artists," "Rolling Stone" rated him at number 13. Among the artists who acknowledge debts to Holly are The Beatles, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, The Clash, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, and The Grateful Dead. It seems clear that Buddy Holly did "Not Fade Away."
