Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 50th position in the chart of UK's most popular number ones, which Ian Dury & The Blockheads single includes the lyrics: "In the wilds of Borneo and the vineyards of Bordeaux Eskimo, Arapaho move their body to and fro"?

Answer: Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick

"Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" was the band's most successful single and spent one week at number one in January 1977, taking over from The Village People's "YMCA".

Ian Dury, who contracted polio at the age of seven, died of cancer on March 27 2000.
2. At 49 on the list, who took "What A Wonderful World" to the top of the UK charts in 1968?

Answer: Louis Armstrong

"What A Wonderful World" was the top selling single of 1968 in the UK.

A cover version by Katie Melua and Eva Cassidy reached number one in December 2007.

Louis Armstrong held the record for being the oldest male to top the UK charts until a Comic Relief cover of "Islands In The Stream" featuring Tom Jones reached number one in 2009. Tom Jones was 68; Louis Armstrong was 66.
3. 48th on the list, which Elvis Presley single was one of his most successful in the UK, spending six weeks at number one in 1970, but only just crept into the top ten in the US?

Answer: The Wonder Of You

Although very successful in the UK, "The Wonder Of You" only reached number nine in the BillBoard Hot 100.

"The Wonder Of You" has been adopted by Port Vale football club fans.
4. In 47th position on the list, what was the big ballad which reached number one for Harry Nilsson in 1972 and again for Mariah Carey in 1994?

Answer: Without You

Both Harry Nilsson and Mariah Carey's versions of "Without You" spent four weeks at the top of the UK charts, but it is the Nilsson version which made it in to this list of the 100 most popular UK number ones.

Sadly both co-writers (Peter Ham and Tom Evans) committed suicide.

As a young teenager, I made up a cassette tape of break-up love songs to torment myself with. This song, along with Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now" were the tops for my teenage lows.

All the suggested answers were Nilsson singles, although "Save The Last Dance For Me" was released only in the UK.
5. At 46 on the list of the most popular UK number ones, which colourful Rolling Stones single includes the lyrics: "No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue. I could not foresee this thing happening to you"?

Answer: Paint It Black

"Paint It Black" was number one in the UK and the US in 1966.

The song title has a variant of "Paint It, Black". The comma was added by the record label.
6. At 45, which song with a movie tie-in scored a bullseye on the UK charts in 1991, spending 16 consecutive weeks at number one?

Answer: "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" by Bryan Adams

"(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" was a huge international success. It spent seven weeks at number one in the US and (as of June 2009) a record breaking sixteen consecutive weeks at number one in the UK. It sold over 1.5 million copies in the UK alone.

It was used as the soundtrack for the film "Robin Hood - Prince Of Thieves" - which presumably accounts in part for its huge success. The top selling singles in 1990 ("Unchained Melody") and 1992 ("I Will Always Love You") also featured in popular films.

"Love Is All Around" was number one for 15 weeks in 1994 (and featured in the film "Four Weddings and a Funeral").
"I Will Always Love You" was number one for 10 weeks in 1992 (featured in "The Bodyguard").
"I'd Do Anything For Love" was number one for seven weeks in 1993.
7. Number 44 on the list is "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" by Elvis Presley. In which year was this number one in the UK?

Answer: 1961

"Are You Lonesome Tonight?" was originally published in 1926. The version by Elvis was number one for four weeks in January/ February 1961. It was number one in the US for six weeks.

A live recording of Elvis substituting some humorous lines in the lyrics and getting an attack of the giggles reached the top 30 in the UK in 1983.
8. The highest placed instrumental is at 43 on the list. Who recorded "Albatross"?

Answer: Fleetwood Mac

"Albatross" was number one in the UK in 1969. It did not make the Billboard Hot 100.

It was the inspiration for The Beatles "Sun King" from their "Abbey Road" album.
9. At 42nd spot on the chart, which Elvis Presley single includes the lyrics: "My hands are shaky and my knees are weak. I can't seem to stand on my own two feet"?

Answer: All Shook Up

"All Shook Up" was released in 1957 and reached number one in both the UK and the US.
It has been covered by both Cliff Richard and Paul McCartney.
10. At 41 on the list, which was the first Oasis single to feature Noel Gallagher as lead vocalist rather than his brother Liam? (Hint: I have heard this song referred to erroneously as "So Sally Can Wait")

Answer: Don't Look Back In Anger

"Don't Look Back In Anger" was the fourth single to be released from "(What's The Story) Morning Glory?". It was number one in the UK for two weeks in 1996.

It is a crowd favourite at Oasis gigs - an opportunity for a good sing-a-long, as I know from personal experience.
