Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At number 20 on the list, which Elvis Presley single opens with the lyrics: "The warden threw a party at the county jail. The prison band were there and they began to wail"?

Answer: Jailhouse Rock

"Jailhouse Rock" was number one in the UK for three weeks in 1958 and for one week in 2005. It was number one in the US for seven weeks in 1957, and went double platinum there.

It is the highest placed Elvis single in this list of the 100 most popular number ones in the UK.
2. At 19th position, which Beatles song was written and performed for "Our World", the first live global television link, in 1967?

Answer: All You Need Is Love

"Our World" was broadcast to 26 countries and watched by around 400 million people on June 25 1967. The UK contribution to this show was "All You Need Is Love", a John Lennon penned number.

It was number one in the UK for three weeks and in the US for one week.

Appearing with The Beatles on the live broadcast, and singing along to the fade-out, were friends such as Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithful and Eric Clapton.
3. At number 18 in the chart, "Tainted Love" was originally recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964. But who covered it in 1981 and took it to the top of the UK charts?

Answer: Soft Cell

"Tainted Love" by Soft Cell was number one in the UK for two weeks in 1981. It was a slow burner in the US and eventually reached number 8.

The original Gloria Jones version was popular in Northern Soul clubs during the late 1970s. Soft Cell took the original and turned it into a synthesisor pop dance track, which was a very popular style in the early 1980s.

At the recording session, Marc Almond's first run-through of the lyrics was the one used on the final record.

The other answers are all cover versions of "Tainted Love". Marilyn Manson had a number five hit with his cover in 2001 - his highest placed single in the UK at the time.
4. At 17 on the chart, which Beatles single was recorded in German as well as English, and had the German title "Sie Liebt Dich"?

Answer: She Loves You

"She Loves You" is one of two Beatles songs recorded in German, the other being "I Want To Hold Your Hand".
The English version was the biggest selling single in the UK until 1977, when it's sales were beaten by Paul McCartney's band Wings and "Mull Of Kintyre".
In the US "She Loves You" was The Beatles second number one. At one stage in 1964 The Beatles had the five top selling singles in the US charts and "She Loves You" was one of them.
5. In 16th position, in which year was The Rolling Stones "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" number one in the UK?

Answer: 1965

"(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" was number one in the UK for two weeks in 1965, and in the US for four weeks.
It is regarded as one of the greatest rock songs of all time, and has a well known opening guitar riff from Keith Richard.
At the time the sexual references and anti-commercialism in the lyrics were regarded as threatening. The Rolling Stones readily took on the mantle of British 'bad boys', in comparison to the more wholesome image Brian Epstein, The Beatles' manager, cultivated for his boys.
6. At 15 in the chart, which charity record written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure was released in 1984 and included artists such as George Michael, Bono, Sting and Boy George?

Answer: Do They Know Its Christmas?

"Do They Know Its Christmas" was prompted by Michael Buerk's BBC report in 1984 about the famine in Ethiopia.
It went straight to number one in the UK and became the fastest selling single of all time. It also became the biggest selling single in the UK at the time.
Other artists contributing on the record included members of Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Kool & The Gang, Status Quo, Bananarama and and Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Phil Collins and Paul Weller.
It spawned a raft of other charity singles, including those given as incorrect answers - "We Are The World", written by Lionel Ritchie and Michael Jackson and released in 1985, was also in aid of the Ethiopia famine.
7. In 14th position, which 1965 song by The Righteous Brothers includes the lyrics: "You never close your eyes any more when I kiss your lips. And there's no tenderness like before in your fingertips"?

Answer: You've Lost That Loving Feeling

"You've Lost That Loving Feeling" was the most played song of the 20th Century according to the performing rights organisation, BMI.
It was co-written and produced by Phil Spector.
It has been in the UK top ten on three occasions. When it was first released in 1965 it was number one for two weeks (as it was in the US). It was re-released in 1969 and 1990.
8. In 13th place on the chart, which 1983 Police song about stalking, control and obsession was their biggest ever hit?

Answer: Every Breath You Take

Regarded by many at the time as a love song, the lyrics of "Every Breath You Take" are actually rather sinister - for example, "Every breath you take, every move you make, I'll be watching you".
It spent four weeks at number one in the UK and eight weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100.
At the 1984 Grammys it won Song Of The Year and the Kevin Godley/ Lol Creme directed video won the cinematography award at the first MTV Video Music Awards.
It has been played on air over nine million times and is estimated to earn Sting around $2,000 a day in royalties.
9. 12th on the list, what single by Pink Floyd was the last UK number one of the 1970s?

Answer: Another Brick In The Wall

"Another Brick In The Wall" is the only UK number one single for Pink Floyd, better known as an album band. Its full title is "Another Brick In The Wall: Part 2" and it is taken from their rock opera "The Wall".
The chorus features children from a school in Islington which was close to the recording studio. The children were overdubbed 12 times to make it seem like there were more children than there actually were.
"The Wall" was made into a film starring Bob Geldof as the main character "Pink".
10. Just missing out on a top ten spot, the 11th single on the chart was the debut single from Kate Bush. What is the name of this song with a literary connection?

Answer: Wuthering Heights

"Wuthering Heights" was written by 18 year old Kate Bush and inspired by the book of the same title, written by Emily Bronte. Kate Bush and Emily Bronte share birthdays - July 30.
It was number one in the UK for four weeks in 1978. Kate Bush became the first British woman to write and perform a UK number one.
Whilst successful throughout Europe and Australia, the single did not manage to break into the Billboard Hot 100.
