Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At 80th place in the chart, the video for which Madonna single was highly controversial and caused Pepsi to pull out of an advertising campaign?

Answer: Like A Prayer

"Like A Prayer" was released in March 1989. It reached number one in both the US and UK.

Madonna was paid $5m by Pepsi Cola to appear in an advertising commercial that featured the video for "Like A Prayer". The advert was pulled after two airings. Madonna got to keep her fee.
2. In 79th position, which ABBA single was used as the catchphrase for Steve Coogan's spoof chat show host Alan Partridge?

Answer: Knowing Me, Knowing You

"Knowing Me, Knowing You" (ah-ha!) was released in 1977. It was a worldwide hit and was number one in the UK, top ten in Canada and Australia and reached number 14 in the US.

Alan Partridge was one of Steve Coogan's alter egos. He began as a sports journalist, fronted his own TV chat show and then was sacked and became a local radio DJ. "Knowing Me, Knowing You ... with Alan Partridge" was the spoof chat show. It ran on the BBC for one series in 1994 with one Christmas special. The theme tune was "Knowing Me, Knowing You" (ABBA being Alan's favourite band).
3. In 78th place, which Beatles song is the only one to feature another artist in the credits?

Answer: Get Back

"Get Back" was on The Beatles' "Let It Be" album. It was credited on the record label to The Beatles with Billy Preston.

"Get Back" included Billy Preston on electronic piano. He was invited along by George Harrison and his presence seemed to reduce the arguments and tensions which were clearly going on between The Beatles at that time.
4. One of three singles sharing 75th position, what is this song by The Righteous Brothers, which also reached number one in the UK for Jimmy Young, Robson & Jerome and Gareth Gates?

Answer: Unchained Melody

Originally released by The Righteous Brothers in 1965, this did not make it to number one in the UK charts until it was re-released in 1990, when it was the top selling single of the year (thanks to featuring in the film "Ghost").

Talking of films, the song first appeared in a 1955 film called "Unchained" which was set in a prison. Hence the title "Unchained Melody".

The song first made number one in the UK when sung by Jimmy Young in 1955. After The Righteous Brothers took it to number one in 1990 it reached number one and was top selling single of the year again in 1995 for Robson & Jerome, and number one for Pop Idol runner-up Gareth Gates in 2002.
5. Sharing the number 75 spot, what David Bowie song from the 1980s, which references a character from an earlier Bowie single, includes the lyrics: "Time and again I tell myself I'll stay clean tonight, but the little green wheels are following me. Oh no, not again"?

Answer: Ashes To Ashes

Reaching number one in the UK in 1980 this did not make the Billboard Hot 100 in the US.

The lyrics refer back to the Major Tom character from Bowie's first hit "Space Oddity" in 1969.

The video was the most expensive musical video ever made at the time and featured individuals from what was to become London's New Romantic scene.
6. The third single to share 75th place is a 1940s show tune which became a 1960s number one and a famous football (soccer) anthem. What is the name of the song?

Answer: You'll Never Walk Alone

Recorded by Gerry & The Pacemakers in 1963, "You'll Never Walk Alone" began life as a show tune in the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical "Carousel". Spending four weeks in the number one spot, it was quickly adopted by Liverpool FC's supporters and the words "You Never Walk Alone" appear above the Shankly Gate at Anfield stadium.

"Happy Talk" comes from "South Pacific" (1949); "Too Darn Hot" is from "Kiss Me Kate (1948) and "Anything You Can Do" is from "Annie Get Your Gun" (1946).
7. Sharing 73rd spot, who had a UK number one in 1976 with the single "Mamma Mia"?

Answer: ABBA

"Mamma Mia" took over the number one spot from "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen - which also included the phrase 'mamma mia'.

"Mamma Mia!" the musical opened in London in 1999. The film was released in 2008.

The other two possible answers both had hits in 1976 - The Andrea True Connection with "More More More" and Fox with "S-s-s-single Bed".
8. Also at number 73, who took the Lennon/ McCartney penned "With A Little Help From My Friends" to the top in 1968?

Answer: Joe Cocker

"With A Little Help From My Friends" was a track on The Beatles "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album, released in 1967. Originally sung by Ringo Starr, it has provided number one hits for Joe Cocker (1968), Wet Wet Wet (1988) and Sam and Mark (2004).
9. At 72 in the chart, what Bonnie Tyler song written by Jim Steinman reached number one in both the UK and US in 1983?

Answer: Total Eclipse Of The Heart

"Total Eclipse Of The Heart" was taken from the album "Faster Than The Speed Of Night" and Bonnie became the first female solo artist to have an album which went straight to the top of the UK album chart.

Jim Steinman also wrote Meat Loaf's "Bat Out Of Hell" and "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)".
10. What Kinks song at 71 on the chart includes the lyrics: "My girlfriend's run off with my car, and gone back to her ma and pa, telling tales of drunkenness and cruelty"?

Answer: Sunny Afternoon

"Sunny Afternoon" by The Kinks was written by Ray Davies. It was number one in the UK for two weeks in July 1966.
