Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1971, a dreamy Christian psychedelic record titled "Help" came out. It is one of the better and more sought after in the genre. Name the band.

Answer: Azitis

Collectors have sought out this particular record for years just for the art work. Now, the music has now come into its own and the record has become iconic. It tells the story of Christian mythology from Creation to Judgment, designed as a rock opera. The band is still alive and the record is available on compact disc or reissue vinyl. Originals are vslued in the $1,000.00 range.
2. One of the best Christian acid folk records came out in the early to mid 1970's. It's know for it's ethereal guitar work and dreamy sedated vocals. The name of an Aztec deity is in the title. Who is the artist?

Answer: Dave Bixby

Dave was involved with 1960's Michigan folk and garage rock. He eventually became involved with LSD and after a year of drug abuse he felt broken. He began a soul searching, spiritual journey and wound up writing "Ode To Quexalcoatl." Quexalcoatl is an Aztec serpent god.

After years of collectors and record dealers searching for Dave, he was recently found and his record was re-released at a reasonable price. Originals can and will fetch $1,000.00.
3. The vocals of Dave Bixby were featured on an extremely rare record that has never come up for sale to my knowledge. It is basically his "lost" second record. The lyrics deal with cosmic imagery, psychedelics and religious/biblical references. Name the band.

Answer: Harbinger

Until a few years ago Harbinger - "Second Coming" was the unknown second record of Dave Bixby's. Bixby is joined by Brian MacInness on guitar, Sandy Johnson on vocals and Don DeGraaf on bass and production duties. Don was in fact leader of the religious destructive cult known as "The Group", of which Bixby and Brian were part of.
4. In 1971, a Christian underground psychedelic masterpiece of a record was issued. The vocals sounded like late period Jim Morrison of The Doors and the album cover had red cellophane, covering a moon on front. Name the band.

Answer: Fraction

The title of this legendary record is "Moonblood." It was taken from the bible in which the moon was turned to blood. A nice copy of this record can fetch several thousand dollars. Not much is known about the band as is the case with most bands in this quiz.
5. In 1974 a murky, basement sounding,lo-fi of a record came out titled "Risen Savior." It's rated highly in collectors cirles and is very sought after. It's also very much in the homemade, DIY category. Name the band.

Answer: Concrete Rubber Band

These guys were one of the first Christian groups to tinker with synthesizers and be experimental at the same time. The record is Christian psychedelia at its most underground and extreme. It's spooky, murky and at times can be reminiscent of a bad LSD trip.
6. In 1980, the first of two amateur, homemade sounding records came out and it was self titled. The music was blues oriented and in the style of Jimi Hendrix. This record was filled with distorted or fuzz guitar. The second was issued in 1982 and was titled "Totally." The band consisted of three black brothers. Name the band.

Answer: 4th Movement

This band has Bobby Hackney on bass and lead vocals, Dennis Hackney on drums, and David Hackney tearin' away on lead guitar. The production is very homemade sounding. Not much is known about the band. You can hear them on Youtube.
7. A lovely Christian folk record was issued in 1971 titled "Lead Me Home." The lead vocals as well as the male/female vocal harmonies are just gorgeous. The front cover has a drawing of a skeletal hand on it with a truck of sorts above it. Name the band.

Answer: RFD

Not many people know this but I was in touch with a guy whose father produced this record and RFD stood for Russ, Fred & Dan. These guys as well as the father all worked together at Bell Labs in Naperville, Illinois. Debbie McKee came to sing at their church, the First Baptist Temple in Somonauk, Illinois and the dad convinced her to meet with the band and they clicked.

The rest is history.
8. In 1976 a band from the southern USA put out their first and only LP with a pressing of only 500. This self titled LP was full of wah-wah guitar, churning organ and strong vocals. It was on the New Life label and part of the name was a word for a type of precipitation. Name the band.

Answer: Latter Rain

These guys were from Kentucky and little is known about them. If you like wah-wah guitar this record is a must for you. Only 500 copies were pressed so it's tough to score an original. This has not been pressed as a reissue compact disc or on vinyl as of yet.
9. In 1974 a record titled "Sounds of Joy" was issued on the Shalom label. All but one song was just run of the mill music. The song "Set Free" was a heavy tune worthy of Black Sabbath. Name the band.

Answer: YHWH

This is pretty much an unknown and scarce record. Nothing is known about the band that I could find other than Russ Taff was a member. All of the songs are easy listening in style except for "Set Free." It's so out of context with the rest of the record that I almost dropped when I heard it.
10. This one has been one of the most sought after records in Christian music. It's chock full of blues style fuzz guitar with a vocalist named Sharon Keel. The record is titled "Hard Rock/Everlasting Life." Name the band.

Answer: Earthen Vessel

Earthen Vessel was formed in 1970 in Lansing, Michigan by Leon Morton a tenor with a local Gospel Quartet. Originally known as The Rare Ones , the band soon changed names to The Earthen Vessel after a biblical reference. The band combined Christian philosophy with psychedelic rock music to forge a new genre in American music.
