PSB Lyrics With A Twist Trivia Quiz

This is a quiz about the Pet Shop Boys' lyrics, but a bit different from usual! I give you a version of the lyric to a song in formal English, and you have to decide which of the four songs I am trying to give you a clue to.

Question 13 of 15
13. There is a hint of 'A Clockwork Orange' to this clue! "The night previous to this (which is not long ago), your narrator realised he had strayed into an unknown region, but which was close to one of the main London termini" leads you to which track name? Hint

Question 14 of 15

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Name the early hit where the Boys suggest that "on occasions, it would be preferable for one's life to be extinguished, seeing that a firearm is in one's possession and is aimed in the direction of a part of the anatomy."

Answer: West End Girls

"Sometimes, you're better off dead/There's a gun in your hand and it's pointing at your head." Massive hit from 'Please'.
2. Which song begged, "please excuse me, Heavenly Creator, as I attempted to avoid that behaviour"?

Answer: It's A Sin

"Father forgive me/I tried not to do it." An influential video accompanied this Number One song taken from 'Actually'.
3. This song noted that "the person referred to previously at no time made an effort to throw a glance your way." What was it?

Answer: Later Tonight

"That boy never cast a look in your direction." Wonderfully atmospheric song from 'Please', the first song performed live by them (on 'The Old Grey Whistle Test', I seem to remember).
4. It galls me to hear them say something like, "tobacco is a habit which both of us have forsaken due to its ability to shorten one's lifespan: given this fact, to whom does the lighting equipment belong?" However, this is one of their best songs - what is the title?

Answer: So Hard

"We both gave up smoking because it's fatal/So whose matches are those?" My favourite lyric from all of their songs, from the underrated 'Behaviour' album. (By the way, do you know how difficult it is to find a synonym for 'matches'?)
5. The Boys were sometimes a bit pretentious, as witness the song implied by these words: "member of the French Resistance, would you like to inform me as to your movements in the near future?" So, would you please name that tune?

Answer: In The Night

"Zazou, what you gonna do?" The notes to the double reissue of 'Please' gave me the information used in the clue, as that's who Zazou was supposed to be.
6. This song really had people laughing at the PSB, as they talked about "a Cuban revolutionary and a French composer set to the strains of modern dance music."

Answer: Left To My Own Devices

"Che Guevara and Debussy to a disco beat." Often cited as an example of how pretentious PSB really are, Neil Tennant claims it's dream imagery. Whatever, it is one of the most stunning opening tracks on any album in music (from 'Introspective').
7. "It is possible that my behaviour towards you was not of the quality expected," but what song am I trying to guide you towards?

Answer: Always On My Mind

"Maybe I didn't treat you/Quite as good as I should have." The best cover version ever? The version on 'Introspective' extended the original to a trance house mix, but was still better than the Willie Nelson or Elvis versions (in my humble opinion).
8. In 1990, one song asked us to "please give me information as to your personal contacts, owing to the fact that I was not contacted at the time arranged." Can you tell what it was?

Answer: Jealousy

"Where've you been? Who've you seen?/You never phoned when you said you would." Another song on the theme of a deteriorating relationship, from 'Behaviour'.
9. I hope this one is as easy as it sounds to me, for "the weather has changed at this time of year, and this contrasts sharply with the figures for previous seasons." By the way, this song isn't played an awful lot - so what is its name?

Answer: It Doesn't Often Snow at Christmas

"It doesn't often snow at Christmas, the way it used to do." Released as a fan club single only in 1996, this has never appeared on any album, which is a shame, as it's one of the best Christmas songs ever. It criticises the commercialism of the season, and namechecks Bing Crosby.
10. It wasn't Tennant or Lowe who said (sort of) that "I am convinced that a location exists which is suitable for both our needs." It was Stephen Sondheim, but which tune fits my altered lyrics?

Answer: Somewhere

"Somewhere, there's a place for us." Included as part of a limited edition double CD of 'Bilingual', and treated to a slowly building 10 minute dance mix. Another cover version of the emotional ballad from 'West Side Story'.
11. "Thoroughfares in this metropolis resemble a closely packed tropical area. With this in mind, custodial authorities should be informed" sounds like a news report, but in fact it was a track not normally associated with the Boys. Do you know its title?

Answer: Boys and Girls

"Streets like a jungle/So call the police." Yes, it's the Blur song, but they covered it live in Rio (reissued on the 'Very' double set) before Blur even recorded it!
12. Now you should get this! "I have a great deal of affection for you, and in return my accommodation fees are settled on my behalf." It was a big hit for the group, and Carter USM did a great live version. Could you name it?

Answer: Rent

"I love you, you pay my rent." Taken from 'Actually'. I remember a savage parody of this by French and Saunders ("They love it, it pays our rent."). Chris Lowe was devastated when he saw it, because, as he said, "that's just what we were like."
13. There is a hint of 'A Clockwork Orange' to this clue! "The night previous to this (which is not long ago), your narrator realised he had strayed into an unknown region, but which was close to one of the main London termini" leads you to which track name?

Answer: King's Cross

"Only last night I found myself lost/by the station called King's Cross." A song that Neil Tennant called "about hopes being dashed", from 'Actually'. It uncannily predicted the fire at that station in 1989.
14. "I wish to ask in Spanish, does a dance hall exist near this place?" asked Neil on an album with a yellow colour. What did he really say?

Answer: Discoteca

"Hay una discoteca por aqui?" From 'Bilingual', and not one of my favourite PSB songs, but then there are so many good ones to choose from! Any fans out there who have done this quiz, please get in touch!
15. Finally, I have to remind you that "amorous attentions arrive in haste, and any actions you may take to avoid them are not important." Well, not quite like that - what was the actual title?

Answer: Love Comes Quickly

"Love comes quickly, whatever you do." From 'Please', still my favourite album by the boys, but anything by them makes me happy! Hope you liked my quiz - let me know if you did!
