Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We might as well start at the beginning. Well... Perry's beginning anyway. Where was Perry born?

Answer: Canonsburg, Pennsylvania

It was on May 18, 1912. In 1946 Canonsburg renamed one of its streets "Perry Como Avenue" in honor of their native son. The people in Canonsburg loved Perry and Perry never forgot them either; to help out the town he convinced RCA to open a record pressing plant there. Bobby Vinton was also born in Canonsburg. Dean Martin was born in Steubenville.
2. Perry wasn't always a singer. Before singing became his full-time profession Perry was in another line of work. Just how did he make a living?

Answer: barber

Perry began cutting hair at an early age and by 14 had his own barber shop.
3. At age thirty, after ten years as a band singer, Perry started recording. Over the years he had over 140 songs on the Billboard charts; all for the same record company. What was this company which had Perry and Elvis as label mates?

Answer: RCA

It was in 1943 that Perry signed with RCA (which was RCA Victor at the time).

After leaving Sun Records in 1956 to sign with RCA, Elvis had at least two songs on the Billboard charts every year until his death in 1977. He also had over 140 hits. Lucky RCA!
4. Once the records started selling big it was time to put Perry in some movies! From 1944-1946 Perry appeared in three films. Which of these movies was he in?

Answer: Doll Face

Perry's first three films were all musicals and all starred Vivian Blaine and Carmen Miranda. In 1948 he was also in "Words and Music" which was a fictionalized story of songwriting team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. Perry basically just sang a song or two and was done.
5. Perry seemed to be a natural for television. In 1948 he made his first TV appearance and by 1950 he had his own show on CBS. That show ("The Perry Como Show") ran for five years. Then in 1955 he began his Saturday night show on NBC. What was the theme song for that show?

Answer: Dream Along With Me

Guests on Perry's first NBC show were Julius LaRosa, Rosemary Clooney and Frankie Laine. The show ran until 1959. During that time it received five Emmys. In 1959 Perry signed a $25 million dollar deal with Kraft Foods to star in 66 TV shows.
6. In 1955 Perry was teamed with a label mate to record a few tunes. They had a hit record with the largely forgotten "Chee Chee-Oo-Chee (Sang the Little Bird)." Who was the other half of the duo responsible for that awful tune?

Answer: Jaye P. Morgan

Jaye P. Morgan is probably remembered mostly for her appearances on games shows and as a regular on "The Gong Show." She recorded for RCA until the late '50s and had over a dozen chart hits; her biggest hit being "That's All I Want From You" which reached Number Three. Jaye's recording of "Are You Lonesome Tonight" made it to number 65 on the charts in early 1959... over a year before Elvis' mega-hit version. That song was written in 1926.
7. In 1958 Perry became the first singer to place a Burt Bacharach song in the U.S. Top Ten. What was the name of that tune?

Answer: Magic Moments

1958 was great year for Perry. January saw him enter the charts with Number One hit "Catch A Falling Star" and its Top Ten flip-side "Magic Moments." He had five more chart singles that year... but it would be twelve years before he had another Top Ten hit. "The Blob" and "Any Day Now" were also written by Burt Bacharach but were hits by other artists.
8. If you happened to "Catch A Falling Star" what did Perry advise you to do with it?

Answer: put it in your pocket

You should put it in your pocket and save it for a rainy day. In 1958 "Catch A Falling Star" received the very first gold record from the Recording Industry Association of America. Perry also received the first Grammy for "Best Vocal Performance Male' for that recording. It was Perry's last Number One hit.
9. At his public appearances the most requested song was the one that Perry just would not sing. What song was it?

Answer: Ave Maria

This song was always a highlight of Perry's television Christmas show. He thought it would be inappropriate to sing it at a concert. "Ave Maria" was written by Frenchman Charles Gounod in 1853. Gounod also wrote "Funeral March of a Marionette" which is perhaps better known as the theme song for the "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" TV show. "Speedy Gonzales" was a Top Ten hit for Pat Boone in 1962.
10. Well... Perry made it through the Beatles' years. It was in late 1970 that Perry entered the Billboard charts with what would be his last Top Ten hit record. What was the name of that song?

Answer: It's Impossible

Entering the charts in November of 1970, "It's Impossible" worked its way up to Number Ten. It was Perry's first Top Ten hit since 1958. He would chart just three more times including the beautiful "And I Love You So." If you missed this one you probably don't have any idea who this quiz is about.
Perry died in his sleep in 2001 at the age of 88.
