Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Gene Kelly sang in the rain, who was the girl who had made him 'happy again'?

Answer: Kathy Seldon

Kathy Seldon was played by the wonderful Debbie Reynolds in the movie 'Singing in the Rain'. It was set at the time of the beginning of talkies, and Cathy with her beautiful voice was forced to dub the sound track for the thoroughly unpleasant Lina Lamont played by Jean Hagen. Of course Cathy eventually gets due credit and all ends happily.
2. In the song 'A Foggy Day in London Town' which London tourist attraction had lost its charm?

Answer: The British Museum

This song was written by George and Ira Gershwin. It was first sung by Fred Astaire in the 1937 musical 'Damsel in Distress'. These days it is often referred to just as 'A Foggy Day' and has been covered by many artists including Frank Sinatra and Michael Buble.
3. Which musical would you be watching if you heard the song 'Too Darn Hot'?

Answer: Kiss Me Kate

Cole Porter wrote this song as part of his musical 'Kiss Me Kate' which is based on Shakespeare's play 'The Taming of the Shrew'. This is an extremely anti feminist play about a man who marries a woman who has a sharp tongue and is her own person. He then proceeds to brain wash her until she has no mind of her own but accepts his views on everything, and obeys him without question.

In Shakespeare's time this was considered very funny.
4. In 1983 The Weather Girls warned us that for the first time in history it was going to rain men. What time did they forecast that this would happen?

Answer: 10.30pm

Paul Jabara and Paul Shaffer wrote the 'It's Raining Men', and offered it first to Donna Summer who refused it because she was a born again Christian and considered the lyrics to be blasphemous. It was then taken up by the American duo The Weather Girls who had a number one dance hit with it in the U.S.A.
5. We have all heard of the song 'Your Tiny Hand is Frozen'. Perhaps I should call it an aria really because it comes from a well loved opera. Can you tell me which one?

Answer: La Boheme

'La Boheme' is an opera by Giacomo Puccini and is the tragic tale of two poor lovers, a seamstress and a poet. It is based on Henri Murger's novel, 'Scènes de la Vie de Bohème', and was first performed in 1896 in Turin conducted by the great Toscanini at the age of only 28. In 1946, fifty years later, Toscanini conducted a performance for the radio in commemoration.
6. Who wrote 'How High's the Water Mama'?

Answer: Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash wrote this song in memory of the great flood of 1930. He had witnessed this when he was a young boy in Dyess, Arkansas. It ruined their family farm along with many others in the area.
7. Which Beatle sang the lead in 'Here Comes the Sun'?

Answer: George Harrison

The Beatles had an agreement that whoever wrote a song was the one who got to sing the lead, and George Harrison wrote and sang this popular song. It is about a young man who has been through a dark time and is looking forward to happier days.
8. Which song begins with these words -'When the mist's arising. And the rain is falling. And the wind is blowing cold across the moor'?

Answer: Johnny Remember Me

'Johnny Remember Me' was a hit in 1961 for John Leyton who was better known for his work as an actor. It was the first number one hit for Producer Jo Meek, and the eerie chorus of the dead girl's voice on the wind was recorded in his bathroom.
9. Which band performed the song 'Rain Fall Down'?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

This is the last song the Rolling Stones had in the UK top forty. It was from their album 'A Bigger Bang' which was released in 2005. The album was a return to their roots as a rock style band.
10. Which singer recorded 'It's Raining in my Heart' on 21st October 1958?

Answer: Buddy Holly

Buddy Holly recorded this song with backing provided by Dick Jacobs and his orchestra rather than his usual backing team The Crickets. It was written by Felice Bryant and Boudleaux Bryant, and first released by Coral Records as the B side of 'It Doesn't Matter Any More'.
