Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What popular band in the early 1990s released a song called "Jeremy?"

Answer: Pearl Jam

In 1991, Pearl Jam released their debut album "Ten." The album has since been certified 13 times platinum. It is considered one of the greatest rock and roll debut albums of all time. Some people even consider it one of the greatest rock and roll albums of all time, debut or not. Several songs from this album, particularly the hit singles, are now regarded by many people as some of the greatest rock songs ever written.

One of those songs is "Jeremy." This song tells the true story of a teenage boy named Jeremy Wade Delle who shot himself at school in the classroom in front of his whole class. Singer/songwriter Eddie Vedder read this story in the Dallas Morning News. According to the story, Delle arrived late to class one day and his teacher told him that he needed to get an admittance slip from the office to be in class. Delle left the class, but instead of going to the office, he went to his locker to get his gun. He returned to the classroom, said "Missy, I got what I really went for," and then shot himself before anyone could react.

According to the song, one of the reasons Delle was suicidal was because his parents ignored him. In real life, his parents were divorced and they indeed both ignored him.

Vedder said that the story reminded him of a different boy that he knew in real life. Vedder had bullied this boy, as he admitted in the beginning of the second verse. Vedder said in an interview that this boy shot up an oceanography room.
2. What 2002 song by System of a Down was originally titled "Suicide?"

Answer: Chop Suey!

System of a Down's most popular song was originally titled "Suicide": in fact in some versions of the "Toxicity" album, you can clearly hear someone saying "We're rolling "Suicide" before the song begins. The song's title was eventually changed to "Chop Suey!" Chop suey is an American-Chinese food dish consisting of meat, eggs, and vegetables covered with a special sauce. The song isn't about the food dish at all. The title is a play on the phrase "Self-righteous suicide," or "self right-chop suey-cide."

According to the guitarist/songwriter Daron Malakian, the song is about how everybody deserves to die because of some sin. He cited his own drug abuse as an example.
3. This 1978 song from Judas Priest goes "Keep the world with all its sin. It's not fit for living in." What is it?

Answer: Beyond the Realms of Death

Judas Priest are one of the most popular and influential metal bands of all time. One of their biggest fan-favorite songs is a power ballad called "Beyond the Realms of Death."

This song is about a lonely man who feels that nobody understands him. He avoids other people as much as he can so he can feel safe. However this causes him to feel lonely and sad, and it eventually causes him to kill himself.

In 1990, Judas Priest were sued because this song was believed to have caused two young men to commit suicide. The case was dismissed. After all, why would a band want their fans to kill themselves? Besides, contrary to what some people believe, this kind of music actually saves people from suicide. Metal music calms down some people's nerves and songs like this help people know that they aren't alone.
4. Who released an album and a song in 1991 called "Hey Stoopid?"

Answer: Alice Cooper

"Hey Stoopid" is the lead single off of Alice Cooper's 1991 album. In the first verse, Alice tells a boy to "Get off that one-way trip down lonely street," presumably meaning find some new friends or get a new lover. He tries to make the boy feel better by saying "You ain't alone in this ugly town." In the second verse, he's singing to a girl who is heartbroken. He basically tells her to find a new love. Alice Cooper is saying things many parents say to their kids, but many kids reject what their parents say, which is why Alice sings "This ain't your daddy talking." In the end he tells everyone they will feel better if the "Blow some steam" and "Come on and scream" the chorus.

The important message in the chorus is that if you kill yourself, "They win, you lose." "They" refers to your bullies.
5. This 2008 song by Disturbed is about how the singer felt when his girlfriend committed suicide. What is it called?

Answer: Inside the Fire

The video for "Inside the Fire" begins with singer David Draiman telling the viewers that the song and video is the true story about someone he knew who committed suicide, and he tells anyone who has suicidal thoughts to call the suicide hotline. The video shows the number for that.

In the video, Draiman walks into a room and sees his girlfriend hanging from a rope, dead. He screams "NOOOO!" and the song begins. The song is sung from the point of view of the devil, who is telling David to kill himself so that he can be reunited with his girlfriend in hell.
6. What song by the Smashing Pumpkins goes "I'll burn my eyes out?"

Answer: Today

According to "Blender" Magazine, Billy Corgan said that "Today" was the first song written for the Smashing Pumpkins' second album "Siamese Dream." The song got a lot of radio play and the video got played a lot on MTV and it is arguably the song that made the Smashing Pumpkins famous. It charted in Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and Australia, and "Eye Weekly" magazine ranked "Today" as the best single of 1993.

Billy Corgan did not always want this song released as a single. The record company wanted "Today" to be the first single from "Siamese Dream." Corgan wanted it to be "Cherub Rock." "Cherub Rock" ended up being the first single, but "Today" ended up being the more successful one. Despite its success, Corgan was mad that the record company released the song as a single against his will. He responded by writing a song attacking the music industry called "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" for the band's next album, "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness."

The song is ironic, because it has happy-sounding music and it says "Today is the greatest day I've ever known." However, the rest of the lyrics suggest that the reason that today is the greatest day he has ever known is because he has decided he was going to commit suicide. According to Corgan, the whole band was going through some really tough times when they made "Siamese Dream" and Corgan was having suicidal thoughts which caused him to write some sad music.
7. Who sang "Cut my life into pieces, this is my last resort"?

Answer: Papa Roach

"Last Resort" is one of the most iconic rock songs of the 21st century. Every young teenage boy loved to sing "Cut my life into pieces, this is my last resort, suffocation, no breathing..." This song charted at number 57 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and helped its album, "Infest" get certified triple platinum and it made Papa Roach a famous band. This song is considered to be part of a genre called "Nu metal," which was popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Some people say it is the greatest nu metal song ever written. Some people have compared the song's guitar riff to the guitar riffs of the band Iron Maiden, and that is just about the biggest compliment you can give to a metal band.

The lyrics describe a guy who is mutilating himself and is "contemplating suicide." The second verse explains why he is miserable: "It all started when I lost my mother." That then led him to have no love for himself or anybody else, and he couldn't find love. According to an article on newstimes.com, singer Jacoby Shaddix said that he wrote this song about his roommate, who actually attempted suicide. Jacoby and his friends took the roommate to a hospital, where he was completely cured, physically and mentally.
8. What song by the Offspring is written from the point of view of a man who has jumped off a cliff?

Answer: I Choose

"I Choose" is the fourth single from the Offspring's fourth album, "Ixnay on the Hombre." It charted in Australia and it charted at number five on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart. It isn't one of the Offspring's most successful singles and it was omitted from their 2005 "Greatest Hits" album, but it is a fan favorite.

The song's opening line reveals that the narrator has just jumped off a cliff and is singing this whole song while he is falling. The chorus describes life as a "Nightmare," and death as a "Playground," and the narrator chooses death. The phrase "Banana fish" in the second verse is a reference to a book by J.D. Salinger, about a fictional species of fish that eats bananas until it dies.

The song also mentions that the narrator and his friends knew they weren't going to live to be 21, and they didn't.

"The Kids Aren't All Right" mentions a kid committing suicide, but it doesn't say that he jumped off a cliff nor is the song sung from the point of view of that kid.
9. What song by Korn goes, "I flirt with suicide?"

Answer: Falling Away From Me

"Falling Away From me" is Korn's first single from their fourth album, "Issues." The video for this song was number one on MTV's Total Request Live for ten days. This song helped the album chart at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and the Australian Album chart, as well as number two in New Zealand and Canada, number four in Finland, number nine in Germany, and it charted in ten other countries as well.

The song is about domestic abuse. The main character says "I flirt with suicide" because he or she is tired of being abused. The song could be Jonathan Davis singing from his own point of view, as he has mentioned in other songs that he was abused as a child. On the other hand, the protagonist in the video is a girl. In the video, it's late at night and the girl has opened a box, which contains the band singing the song. The music has woken up her father, who then screams from his bedroom. The girl knows that he is going to beat her for this (the video shows a flashback of him beating her in the past). A crowd has gathered outside her bedroom window raising their arms to the beat of the song. The crowd helps her escape out the window just before her father manages to get in the room.
10. This 2006 ballad from Three Days Grace is a positive message for someone who, according to the chorus, says that he or she wants to end his or her life. What is the song?

Answer: Never Too Late

"Never Too Late," is the fourth single from Three Days' Grace's sophomore album "One-X." Three Days Grace set the record for most number one singles on the U.S. Mainstream Rock Tracks chart with 15, surpassing Van Halen and Shinedown. Of all of their songs, "Never Too Late" has been considered their second most popular song, behind only "I Hate Everything About You." It was on that chart for 45 weeks and it even made it to the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at number 71. It helped "One-X" become certified triple-platinum in the U.S.

In the song, Adam Gontier is singing to someone who wants to commit suicide (the chorus says "I hear you say you want to end your life"). Adam sings that the world will never be exactly what you want it to be, and you can never recover the time you've lost. However, it is never too late to turn your life around.
