Formed by Pete Townshend and Kit Lambert in 1969, Thunderclap Newman was a British rock band that had a short-lived run in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Their 1969 single "Something in the Air", which reached number one in the UK chart, is a very popular choice for TV ads and movie soundtracks.

"Something in the Air" plays as Danielle and Matthew are sitting in the diner. Danielle is sketching what looks like a picture of herself, and Matthew takes the opportunity to ask her "what's your story", to which Danielle replies "I don't know. I kinda just quit my job. I wanna start over, maybe go to college". Matthew then rather nervously asks Danielle if she has a boyfriend, to which Danielle answers "No".

"This Year's Love" plays as Matthew gains the courage to stand up the the high school "cool kids" at the house party. He has just been asked to leave by Derek as "this party's getting kinda full", so that Hunter can be free to try it on with Danielle. He is about to comply when he decides he's not going to just roll over, and walks over to where Hunter and Danielle are talking, says "Excuse me", and engages in a passionate kiss with Danielle. The song plays again after prom, as Matthew and Danielle drive home in the limousine together.

We see a montage of a rather down Matthew walking through the school corridor, playing video games and driving with Eli and Klitz, and in class, looking out of the same window outside of which Danielle beckoned him to leave class earlier in the movie.
